Language Development Course (Listening Comprehension) MoviesEnglish Teaching+Learning+Entertainmentl Film in teaching“The eye is more powerful than the ear”.( Jane Sherman, 2003) “Watching a movie together can provide an excellent starting-point for conversation and reflection about important issues in life. It is often easy to see and understand human behavior and dilemmas in the fiction film format. Documentary film can put people, places, and events in new perspectives. Films can bring the past to life, mirror the present-day and help us to identify with people in different countries, with different cultural backgrounds and living under different conditions. Experiencing a movie together provides a way to sparkle students curiosity and inspired continued knowledge seeking”. These kinds of activities also contribute to the promotion of critical thinking especially in evaluating films and improving language skills.Other ways of using films in the classroom are: Segmenting the film, pre-watching, while-watching and post-watching activities, which are very useful as cloze exercises, quizzes, related readings, web sites, film presentations, discussions, research work, etc.Watching a film in real life is usually fun and relaxing. We the teachers should try to create a similar atmosphere in the classroom so that both the teacher and the students enjoy the film and the tasks along with it. Not all what we have prepared might be successful, but we should not give up. We have to evaluate what went wrong and try to improve it in the second attempt. After all, practice makes perfect.Model film Freaky Friday (辣妈辣妹) Pre-watching Activities:Pair work/Group discussion:Today we are going to talk about parental love. Now work with your neighbours and discuss the following questions:l So far as you are concerned, What are the characteristics of parental love?l Do you often call or write to your parents? What do you usually tell your parents on the phone / in your letters?l Is there a generation gap between you and your parents? How do you resolve your differences?l Do you and your parents believe in different values? Are your parents living models of their systems of values?l Suppose one day when you wake up and exchange body with your mother, what do you think will be happening later on? Here are some sentences and structures that you might find useful in discussing the above questions: Parents love for their child is selfless / forever strong / never changing. There is no love like a mothers love for her child. No bond is stonger than that between parent and child. I usually cook something special for my mother on Mothers Day. My father will take me and my mother out for dinner to celebrate. I love my parents because they give me life / have sacrificed a lot in bringing me up / are always there for me whenever I need them. My mother is thrify and industrious / generous and compassionate / a career woman. There are bound to be differences between parents and their children. A good way to resolve differences is to sit down and talk. While-watching Activit
