Several articles and other research materials will be distributed throughout the course. Blackboard will be used to supplement lectures and for students to obtain additional materials. All students should get a Blackboard account and visit the HTM 201 course site each Monday morning before class. StructureThe industry offers variety, and so will this course. Large group sessions will include discussion of HTM topics, group exercises, video, industry panels and guest speakers. Students are encouraged to use the access to the industry provided in the course to build a portfolio of resources that will be valuable throughout his/her education and career. Sections, as indicated on the course outline, will be held in section rooms (TBA) and led by the course section leaders. Students will be assigned a section leader during the first day.Assignments/OutcomesStudents are required to turn in assignments according to the attached schedule. Outcomes are both individual and group, and the course outline indicates due dates. I cannot accept late work. If you must miss an assignment, I encourage you to make advance arrangements with us so you can complete the assignment prior to your absence. Readings/Section Games/Exams The reading listed on the outline is required prior to the beginning of the assigned class. Three times during the semester you will have an opportunity to learn knowledge points during the section games as scheduled on the course outline. A midterm will evaluate the reading requirements as well. There will be no make-ups for exams or section games. Portfolio (Individual)Throughout the semester-long travel, each student will maintain a portfolio of article and speaker summaries, event observations, in-class exercises, business cards, website bookmarks, and a variety of other industry-related resources. Portfolios will be reviewed several times during the semester. Completed portfolios should reflect your individuality - and creativity counts. A detailed list of the requirements will be distributed 1/25Scavenger Hunt (Group)Groups of 5 students will receive a list of items to “find” during the course. This hunt will encourage you to seek out resources and broaden your exposure to the industry. Lists will be distributed to groups 1/25. Hunts must be completed by 2/3 to receive full credit. The first team to turn in all the listed items will receive a bonus of 10 extra points and the second group will receive a bonus of 5 extra points. Music Video/DVD (Group)Groups of 4-6 students will create music videos communicating an HTM topic. Groups will rewrite the lyrics to an existing song, storyboard their concept, and direct, produce, edit and showcase their music video. Group members are welcome but not required to perform in the video. The video music awards ceremony is required in lieu of a final exam. It is the week of 5/5 date/location TBA.Video project requirements will be distributed 2/3.LogisticsSeveral of our class sessions will showcase industry speakers. During these sessions, as indicated on the outline, we will meet in COM207. There will be a dress code on these days as indicated. Students not conforming to the dress code will be asked to leave and receive no credit for that session. The hospitality business is one that often requires strict, corporate attire, so these “A” dress day sessions are good opportunities to mirror the practices of industry. As your section leaders and I will be dressing up these days as well, I will not accept any “whining” about it. Attendance Missing class will probably end up affecting exam scores, as many exam questions will cover class discussions and speakers, and will definitely impact the portfolio score. Attendance will be recorded each session and will impact the attendance portion of your evaluation. Students are encouraged to exchange contact numbers with a few students to obtain information about missed classes. When possible, course presentations and materials will be posted on the Blackboard site. Getting InvolvedYou will have opportunities throughout the semester to get involved in the industry. San Diego professionals in the HTM industry are solidly behind the HTM degree program and will offer job shadows, training sessions, meetings, and other mentor opportunities throughout the semester. Students are encouraged to make contacts early, learn about the tremendous array of opportunities in the field, and engage themselves in practical experiences to complement the classroom experiences.
