Unit Five PersonalityTeaching Objective: improve the reading abilityTeaching focus: Understand the main idea of text A and have mastered the useful sentence structures, words and expressions used in the relevant exercises of the passage.Teaching difficulties: Let students understand the main idea of the Text ATeaching Procedures: daily report, lead-in, listening, reading, translation, writing, homeworkStage1 Daily ReportAsk the student on duty to make a daily report, encouraging him or her to speak more about personality. While listening, the students make some notes. Then ask some students to retell what the reporter said.Stage2 Lead inStep1 Culture backgroundEveryone brings along his own personality. The personality has a profound effect on the quality of work and on professional development.The mind frame, the inner attitude, the specialized knowledge, the ability, the aura and the level of energy are part of the personality of the individual person. These qualities are affected by systemic influences and energies of different surrounding or inner systems. Generally speaking, your personality is considered to be the totality of character attributes and behavioral traits that you possess. Your personality will differentiate you from another person , such as your spouse , personal friend , neighbor , associate at work , and others, The type of personality you develop through the stages of life can adversely or positively affect your current life situation or future plans . Factors such as individual attributes, social attribute, how what you dont know can affect you, the keys to success from developing your personality, among others, will be of interest to you . People who are really successful in life will undoubtedly have different personality characteristics, but they are neither not extrovert. In many cases, normal people ( those without medical , psychological or psychiatric personality disorder problems requiring professional treatment ) will tent to display tendencies that are both introvert and extrovert at times , But the positive attributes are still necessary for their real substantial success . Some professionals want us to know that successful people certainly share a set of common personality characteristics. Therefore, our personality can positively or adversely affect our lives and success. Good positive attributes can only help us achieve our goals in life. The negative factors in our personality will hinder us from a better relationship and lifes success.Step2 Topics for discussion1. T gives two questions and asks Ss discuss them in groupsQ: What personality do you have? What do you think is more important to a persons success, hard word or personality?2. Show their workLet each group share their opinions with others. While listening, the listeners should take some notes, then retell and share.3. SummarizeThe teacher summarizes the Ss job, making some comments. Then write down the useful words and expressions needed.Stage3 Listening Step1 Activity 1 Calculation1. Listen to the statements only once and choose A, B, C or D which is the closest in meaning to the statement you hear.2. Two Ss write their answers on the Bb.3. Check the answers together. Listen to the conversations just only once and then decide whether the statements below are true, false or not mentioned according to the conversations you hear.2. Have the Ss read Text A in 7 minutes and do the reading comprehension to test whether to understand the text2. Calls on volunteers or a few students to tell the answer and then helps the students identify the main idea of the text.Step3 language points1. On the surface this appears to be a simple question, but if you answer too hastily, you may end up sounding like every other candidate. (Para. 2)这里appear意为“似乎,好像,看来”,后面可接不定式短语。例如:He appears to be sincere, but I dont completely trust him. 他似乎很诚恳,不过我不能完全信任他。2. You must think about what makes you unique and how you can make yourself stand out and be remembered. (Para. 2)这句话中what和how引导的从句并列作think about的宾语。在make yourself stand out and be remembered中stand out和be remembered并列作make的宾语补语。 3. Dont give the interviewer the same answers everybody else gives. (Para. 3)这是一个祈使句,用于表达劝告。这篇文章在多处使用了祈使句。祈使句一般省去主语you,以动词的祈使式开头,表示要求、请求、劝告和命令等。动词的祈使式与动词原形相同,无时态与数的词形变化。4. Take a look at these typical answers and think about how you can make them more unique. (Para. 4)句中these typical answers和how引导的从句都是介词at的宾语。这里的take / have a look (at somebody/something)意为“考虑,思考”。Step4 summaryT encourages Ss to make a summary of this unit.Stage5 translationStep 1 T would explain the translation method to the Ss.同位语从句是用以解释说明前面某一名词的内容的,也就是将这一名词的含义具体化,其地位和此名词是同等的。从句常用that或whether来引导。同位语从句常用来说明fact, theory, sense, question, conclusion, news, experience, evidence, proof, condition, law, conjecture, doubt等词的具体含义。翻译此类从句时,一般有两种处理方法:一种把从句译成一个独立的句子,并在其前加即,这等词,或在从句所修饰的名词之后加冒号或破折号;二是用的字把从句放在它所修饰的词之前。如:Furthermore, it is obvious that the strength of a countrys economy is directly bound up with the efficiency of its agriculture and industry, and that this in turn rests upon the efforts of scientists and technologists of all kinds.(2000年)结构分析:句子的框架是Furthermore, it is obvious that, and that.这是典型的句型It+is+obvious+that clause. It是形式主语,真正的主语是由连词and连接的两个并列的主语从句:A.that the strength isbound with, B.and that thisrests upon the efforts.第一个主语从句中的词组be bound up with是与有关联之意;在第二个主语从句中,代词this指代前文的the efficiency of its agriculture and industry,译为效率的提高。参考译文:再者,显而易见的是一个国家的经济实力与其工农业生产效率密切相关,而效率的提高则又有赖于各种科技人员的努力。熟能生巧There is no agreement whether methodology refers to the concepts peculiar to historical work in general or to the research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry.(1999年)结构分析:句子的框架是There is no agreement whetheror.主句是There is no agreement, agreement后面紧跟了由whether引导的同位语从句作同位语;在同位语从句中,谓语动词短语refers to跟了两个由连词or连接的并列宾语:A. the concepts peculiar to historical work in general; B. the research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry.在第一个宾语中,形容词词组peculiar to historical work和介词词组in general作后置定语修饰the concepts;在第二个宾语中同样有形容词词组appropriate toof historical inquiry作后置定语修饰the research techniques.参考译文:所谓方法论是指一般的历史研究中的特有概念,还是指历史探究中各个具体领域适用的研究手段,人们对此意见不一。Step 2 T would ask the Ss to do some translation exercises:1.
