The lava rocks form walls, many of them built by her great-great-great-grandfather and his brothers, and these walls have been enclosing cattle for generations. Some are more than 200 years old.As the fifth generation in a family of Hawaiian cowboys, DeeDee would rather spend the day riding horses. But, more often than not, weekends find her and her family checking and fixing the miles of rock walls. The family still goes across much of the ranch (大牧场) on horseback, because many areas are too rocky to be accessible by a vehicle. “I always wanted to be a cowboy when I grew up,” she says. “When thats all you know, its kind of hard to do anything else.”Her family raises around 200 head of cattle on 1,000 acres of land. DeeDees relatives also fish, hunt wild pigs, raise chickens and grow vegetables. Oral histories passed from generation to generation link DeeDees ancestors to this area long before they started to raise cattle here. “When were on the land, its a very close relationship because of the connection between our family and the land,” she says. Island visitors are more likely to associate the Hawaiian landscape with sun and surf, and few probably realize the paniolos (牧人) were raising cattle in the islands uplands decades before cowboys started riding horses in the American West. Mexican cowboys were brought to Hawaii around 1830 to teach native Hawaiians how to tame the cattle running wild after being brought to the islands in 1793.The paniolos worked on ranches across the Hawaiian Islands. The first significant one, Parker Ranch, was founded on the Big Island in 1847 and, along with other ranches like Puuwaawaa, served as the islands main source of beef through the 1960s.( )21. The materials used to build the walls are more than 200 years old.( )22. What does DeeDee usually do on weekends?A. Ride horses. B. Fix rock walls. C. Gather with her family. D. Feed cattle.( )23. It made me feel very important because it was a precious gift to me in the year when a printed diary was rare. During the first week of my life as a diary owner, I kept looking at it, my heart swelling with pride. In the second week, I suddenly felt nervous. I had not written a single word in the diary. And now each page seemed to be looking at me in sorrow for the way it was being ignored. So I decided to keep an account of how I spent the day at school.I kept my promise to the diary. Every day after coming back from school, I would take out the diary, open the page dated for that day and write about what happened. But a strange thing happened each page looked dull, instead of looking as if it came straight out of a famous writers book. The entries were almost identical: Went to school. Had a class test. The English teacher had not come. Lunch was good .Imagine my surprise when I recently read a 4,000-year-old account of a young boys day in school. It sounded almost the same as mine! This boy was from Sumer (苏美尔), a part of the Mesopotamian (美索不达米亚的) civilization. The Sumerians, as they were called, are responsible for a lot of things. They constructed the first cities. They invented writing and the idea that children must go to a place like school for education and instruction. What was the account of the boys day in school like? Well, almost like mine but 4,000 years ago! Unbelievable! I read this account in a book called The Mammoth Book of How It Happened by a gentleman called Jon E Lewis. In a fascinating manner, he has put together into one collection eyewitness accounts of moments in history, both eventful and ordinary. The book told me that for schoolchildren anywhere in the world and probably, at any time in history, school has always meant the same. Perhaps, writing diaries too!( )29. Research shows that the site has continuously evolved (演变) over a period of about 10,000 years. The structure that we call “Stonehenge” was built between roughly 5,000 and 4,000 years ago. The biggest of Stonehenges stones, known as sarsens, are up to 30 feet (9 meters) tall and weigh 25 tons on average. It is widely believed that they were brought from Marlborough Downs, a distance of 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the north. Smaller stones, referred to as “bluestones”, weigh up to 4 tons and come from several different sites in western Wales, having been transported as far as 140 miles (225 km). It is not known how people in ancient times moved them that far. Recent experiments show that it is possible for a one-ton stone to be moved by a dozen people on a wooden trackway (轨道), but whether this technique was actually used by the ancient builders is uncertain. Scientists have also raised the possibility that during the last ice age glaciers carried these bluestones closer to the Stonehenge area and the monuments makers didnt have to move them all the way from Wales. Water transport by raft is another idea that has been proposed, but researchers now question whether this method was practical. Stonehenge is just one part of a larger sacred landscape that contains many other stone and wooden structures. Archaeologists have also found evidence for widespread prehistoric hunting. Hunting played an important role in the area. Researchers have uncovered roughly 350 animal bones, just a mile away from Stonehenge, the finds dating from 7500 B.C. to 4700 B.C. The presence of abundant wild animals may have led people to consider the area sacred. Dozens of graves have been discovered near Stonehenge, indicating that hundreds, if not thousands, of people were buried there in ancient times. ( )33. What can we learn about Stonehenge from the text?A. It was built about 10,000 years ago.B. The stones at the site were brought from Marlborough Downs. C. The biggest stones are called sarsens. D. The site has not changed since it was built.( )34. How were the bluestones brought to the site? A. They were moved by a dozen people on a wooden trackway. B. They were carried to the site by water transport. C. Scientists are uncertain about it. D. Glaciers carried the bluestones closer to the area. ( )35. What has been discovered at Stonehenge?A.
