Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers. Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation. Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult sometimes to make the people realize this. They cut down the trees but are too careless to plant and look after new trees. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in, and also bind the soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, the rainfalls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the rain carries away the rich top soil in which crops grow. When all the top soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert. 5. Trees are useful to man mainly in three ways, the most important of which is that they can . A. keep him from the hot sunshineB. protect him from droughts and floodsC. make him draw quick profit from themD. enable him to build warships【解析】选B。 Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him food、wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent drought and floods. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. 6. Its a great pity that . A. man hasnt realized the importance of trees to himB. man is eager to profit from treesC. man is only interested in building empiresD. man hasnt found out that he has lost all trees【解析】选A。 Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. 7. A. unless a country has a plenty supply of treesB. unless people stop cutting down their treesC. unless the government punishes those who cut trees instead of planting themD. unless all people are taught the importance of planting trees【解析】选D。 So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests slowly disappear. 8. The underlined word “bind” in Paragraph 5 means “”. A. to wash awayB. to make stay togetherC. to make wetD. to improve【解析】选B。 This prevents the soil from being washed away. Are you a happy person or an unhappy person? If youre an unhappy person, please remember that happiness is a choice. 1 What you need to do is to make some changes. Unhappy people are more likely to believe that life is hard. They see themselves as victims of life when something bad happens to them. Yes, as is known to all, life can be hard. 2Unhappy people are more likely to believe that most people cant be trusted. They dont think strangers can be trusted. Unfortunately, this thought slowly starts to prevent them from meeting new people. 3 In this way, you can make more friends, who can increase your happiness. Unhappy people like comparing themselves with others and feel jealous. 4 This is wrong. Instead you should get inspired and try to achieve more. Learn to believe in unlimited possibilities. Dont get upset and think that somebodys luck limits your possible outcome in life. Unhappy people consider their future with worry and fear. 5 Unhappy people fill the head space with worry and fear. How can you be happy if you are always in worry or fear? When fear or worry crosses your mind, ask yourself if there is an action you can take to prevent your fear or worry from happening. If there isnt, just lay it down because worry or fear does you no good at all. Everyone will probably swim in negative waters once in a while, but what matters is how long you stay there. Follow the ways mentioned above and then you will be much happier. A. You can choose to be happy. B. Unhappiness is also a choice. C. There is only so much space between your ears. D. They believe that someone elses luck is stolen from their own. E. You should try to be kind to others in order to make more friends. F. But you should have a positive attitude towards life instead of complaining all the time. G. Instead, you should believe in the good in people
