of the dominant literary figures in the eighteenth century of England His novels are created at an early stage in the development of the 18th century novels and he is regarded as the first important novelist in history of English literature Moll Flanders is seen as the first real novel of England so a grasp of the language features of this novel will help to comprehend and search the laws of the development of writing arts so as to promote the development of modern literature Since language is the carrier of thoughts of the characters it is much significant to make a detailed research on the language features in Moll Flanders That is why the thesis will take Defoe s language features in Moll Flanders as its research motives 1 2 Literature Review In order to know more about the issues it is necessary to have a sketch look first to see what has been researched on this novel in the past The Common Reader published in 1938 is Virginia Woolf s first major collection of critical essays It has remained in print ever since and has been an influential work of non fiction which has taught generations of people how to enjoy literature The range of topics including in this volume of over twenty essays includes Elizabethan drama essays of Jane Austen and Defoe dealing with point of views and comments on modern fictions Virginia Woolf in her book claims that Moll Flanders which stands among the few English novels is indisputably great She gives an illustration to the work from the point of its plot development and the moral desire combined with Defoe s characters and genius And in The Rise of the Novel published in 1957 Ian Watt says that Moll Flanders has been universally regarded as the great achievement which Defoe has achieved and it is the best work 英文一级标 题使用小四 号加粗 Times New Roamn 字体 英文二级标 题使用五号 加粗 Times New Roamn 字体 iv with reference to the study of his artifices In this book he studies the character of Moll Flanders He thinks that Moll Flanders bears many feminine properties and he praises that Moll Flanders does not have the weakness which appears in females He sees a man like property as her core feature which touches the fundamental political problem in the study of the characters of feminine s conversational implicature masculinity property and feminine property On the other hand the book also illustrates critically Moll s pursuit in the individual value from the perspective of culture Also he gives an insightful analysis from the perspectives of realism and through time and space John J Richetti s Defoe s Narrative Situations and structures published in 1975 views that Moll Flanders is about both eighteenth century social and economic realities and the superior reality of a self Moll learns to be more horrified by disorder of the reality than the evil By realizing the full negative force of social forms she gains a kind of positive wisdom and affirms a new kind of self Moll converts the bustle of the London street to her personal profit by observant self reservation Since Ian Watt a female critic named Madeleine Kahn in her Narrative Transvestism in 1991 pointes out that Moll Flanders is not merely a woman whose character is originated the arts that a male writer used and the vitality of the non female feature within the heroine lies not in the destruction of a female narrator s imagination but in its charm Kahn further combines the narrative analysis with the feminine conversational implicature in a way which not only activates and enriches the pure form study of Narratology but also inquires into the narrative authority of masculinity as well as the tension of the feminine s narrative language Anne Kathrin Rochwalsky in her Credibility and Realism in Daniel Defoe s Moll Flanders and Aphra Behn s Oroonoko written in 1997 discusses the aspect of particularity which in Moll Flanders was often discussed in literary criticism Moll is quite one sided because all her concerns in life are of an economic nature Critics go so far to speak of her having an economic psychology Her character is revealed by her actions and thoughts but the reader knows few details of her marriages She expresses less her emotions but mentions much of her economic matters She is completely devoted to material comfort This is the reason why Dorothy Van Ghent for instance argues that Moll is not an example of true realism although she admits that there is a realistic representation of the v background through reading the whole novel In addition in Circulation Defoe Dickens and the Economies of the Novel published in 1988 David Trotter argues that in Moll Flanders Defoe illustrates an economy of trade entering the lives of characters at every point Li Ling in her paper The Narrative Arts of Defoe s Novels in Journal of Nan Chang University in 2006 gives a systematic and relatively complete study on Defoe s novels including a research to the current situation and relevant theories on the descriptive levels of narrative works in narratology Besides these she also makes a comparison of the difference between his novels and fictions before the eighteenth century from authenticity and morality of Defoe s novels Wang Li in her paper On Moll Flanders from the Perspective of Feminist Post Colonialism in Science published in 2006 discloses the marginalized position of the low class women in the man dominated money orientated society Emerging as an orphan from the lowest social class Moll courageously defies her birth and manages to achieve the self designated identity of a gentlewoman Centering on Moll s search for personal identity this paper discusses the various roles she has assumed to obtain gentlewoman ship such as maid mistress wife thief prisoner penitent and finally a prosperous gentlewoman with a view of unmasking the real Moll underneath the multi layered disguises In fact Moll is nobody but an outsider being marginalized in the patriarchal society Huang Yuanyuan in her paper in 2008 studies this work from the view of the status of English women in the eighteenth century in An Hui Literature Huang realized that though Moll Flanders is a remarkable woman but at that time society economy legal system and traditional gender discrimination custom make Defoe s women do not go beyond the traditional social role However with the development of British capitalism the entire British society is in transition from agricultural society to industrial society new opportunities new ideas and new challenges are all in service Women s life and personal experience have also changed Through the novel Huang praises Defoe s advanced view for women and peeps the women in marriage life social status and other aspects of the situation between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century Liu Jinlong in his paper On the Popular Consciousness and Pattern in Defoe s Novel Creation in Jounal of Ji Xi University published in 2008 studies the popular mode of Daniel Defoe s novel He finds that interpretations of vi the studies are not so just Defoe does try hard to initiate the novel as a new literary genre To reflect the real life he usually uses the creative patterns of the popular fiction to enrich the original classic code of the creative mode which makes the novel popular Defoe draws nutrients from dramas legends fables and satirical literature and finally develops a new genre of literary talent in the eighteenth century Liu praises that the mode of Defoe s novels is a significant popular fiction 1 3 Existing problems After a detailed study of the related materials on Defoe s novels I find that a lot of researches have been made almost covering every aspect However I also realize that though the researches done at the present situation are various there still exist some problems In the present studies on Moll Flanders more researches have been done in morality feminism narration as well as in characterization Yet the studies on Defoe s language features in the novel are not so systematic especially in the aspects of Defoe s diction sentence structure and the points of view on which a systematic study is essential to be given 1 4 Research Focuses At the present of my research this thesis tries to analyze and summarize the language features which are used in this work and its narrative structure that the author adopts Through a systematic study of the language features of Moll Flanders I hope it can give some guidance to the interpretation of the language and enjoy a better comprehension of the novel So the thesis will focus on the special use of words the variety of the sentence structure and the truthfulness of narration II Outline 2 1 The Peculiarity of Words 2 1 1 The Choice of Words 2 1 2 The Layout of Words 2 2 The Variety of Sentences 2 2 1 Simple Sentences 2 2 2 Long Sentences 2 3 The Truthfulness of Narration 各二级标题 间空一行 vii 2 3 1 The I Narrator 2 3 2 Narrative Structure III III Conclusion Expected Defoe s language in Moll Flanders is unique and impressive The thesis mainly focuses on the language features of the novel from three parts It will first focus on the peculiar choice and the layout of the words then discuss the various patterns of sentences and lately analyze the truthfulness from the I narrator and the narrative structure Through the analysis of the language the thesis will end with a clear conclusion about Defoe s smooth easy and colloquial language which pervades in the novel and pictures the reader a truthful and
