Beauty of LifeWhere shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide? And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech? The aggrieved and the injured say,“Beauty is kind and gentle.Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us.”And the passionate say,“Nay,beauty is a thing of might and dread.Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us.”The tired and the weary say,“Beauty is soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit. Her voice yieds to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear lf the shadow.”But the restless say,“We have heard her shouting among the mountains and with her cries came the sound of hoofs ,and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions.”At night the watchmen of the city say,“Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east.”And at noon-time the toilers and the wayfarers say,“We have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset.”In winter say the snow-bound,“She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills.”And in the summer heat the reapers say,“We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of snow in her hair.”All these things have you said of beauty, yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied, and beauty is not a need but an ecstasy. It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand streched forth, but rather a heart enflamed and soul enchanted. It is neither the image you would see nor the song you would hear, but rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw, but rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face. The Best Years of Ones LifeThe ups and downs of life may seem to have no predictable plan. But scientists now know there are very definite patterns that almost all people share.Even if youve passed some of your “prime”,you still have other prime years to experience in the future.Certain important primes seem to peak later in life. When are you smartest? From 18 to 25,according to IQ scores, but youre wiser and more experienced with increasing age.Youre sharpest in your 20s;around 30,memory begins to decline, particularly your ability to perform mathematical computations. But your IQ for other tasks climbs. Your vocabulary at age 45,for example,is three times as great as when you graduated from college. At 60,your brain possesses almost four times as much information as it did at age 21.This trade-off between sharpness and wisdom has led psychologists to suggest that “maturity quotients”(MQ)be adopted for adults. When are you happiest? You have the best physical sense of yourself from 15 to 24;the best professional sense from 40 to 49.Before age 24,we believe that our happiest years are yet to come;over 30,we believe that theyre behind us.A National Health Survey agrees: After age 30,we “become more realistic and do not view happiness as a goal in itself. If we maintain our health, achieve professional and emotional goals, then happiness,we feel, will follow”.When are you most creative? Generally between 30 and 39,but the peak varies with defferent professions.Mozart wrote a symphony and four sonatas by age eight, and Mendelssohn composed his best known work A Midsummer Nights Dream at 17,but most of the great music was written by men between 33 and 39.Though the peak in most fields comes earlymost Nobel prizewinners did their top research in their late 20s and 30screative people continue to produce quality work throughout their lives. For the “well-conditioned mind”,there is no upper limit. Experience LifeI have known want and struggle and anxiety and despair.I have always had to work beyond the limits of my strength. As I look back upon my life,I see it as a battlefield strewn with the wrecks of dead dreams and broken hopes and shattered illusionsa battle in which I always fought with the odds tremendously against me,and which has left me scarred and bruised and maimed and old before my time.Yet,I have no pity for myself;no tears to shed over the past and gone sorrows;no envy for the people who have been spared all I have gone through. For I have lived. They only existed.I have drunk the cup of life down to its very dregs. They have only sipped the bubbles on top of it.I know things they will never know.I see things to which they are blind.I have learned in the great University of Hard Knocks a philosophy that no one who has had an easy life ever acquires.I have learned to live each day as it comes and not to borrow trouble by dreading tomorrow. It is the dark menace of the future that makes cowards of us.I put that dread away from me because experience has taught me that when the time comes that I so fear, the strength and wisdom to meet it will be given to me.Little annoyances no longer have the power to affect me.I have learned not to expect too much of people, and so I can still get happiness out of the friend who isnt quite true to me or the acquaintance who gossips.Above all,I have acquired a sense of humor, because there were so many things over which I had either to cry or laugh. And when one can joke over her troubles instead of having hysterics, nothing can ever hurt her much again.I do not regret the hardships I have known, because through them I have touched life at every point I have lived.A nd it was worth the price I had to pay. Stress PreventionStress is a normal part of life and usually comes from everyday occurrences. Here are some ways you can deal with everyday sources of stress.Eliminate as many sources of stress as you can.For example,if crowds bother you,go to the supermarket when you know the lines wont be too long.Try renting videotapes rather than going to crowded movie theaters. If you are always running late, sit down with a pencil and paper and see how you are actually allotting your time. You may be able to solve your problem(amd de-stress your life a bit)just by being realistic. If you cant find the time for all the activities that are important to you, maybe you are trying to eo too much.Again, make a list of what you do during the day and how much each activity takes. Then cut back.Avoid predictably stressful situations. If a certain sport or game makes you tense(whether its tennis or bridge),decline the invitation to play. After all,the point of these activities is to have a good time.If you know you wont, theresno reason to play.If you cant remove the stress, remove yourself.Slip away once in a while for some private time. These quiet moments may give you a fresh perspective on your problems.Competing with others, whether in accomplishments, appearance,or possessions,is an avoidable source of stress. You might know people who do all they can to provoke envy in others. While it may you seem easy to you to say should be satisfied with what you have, its the truth.Stress from this kind of jealousy is self-inflicted.Laborsaving devices, such as cellular phones or computer hookups, often encourage us to cram too many activities into eachday. Before you buy new equipment,be sure that it will really improve your life.Be aware that taking care of equipment and getting it repaired can be stressful.Try doing only one thing at a time. For example, when youre riding yourexercise bike, you dont have to listen to the radio or watch
