Sheryl: Frank, some Sprite? Frank: Yes. Sheryl: And I want everyone to have at least a little salad. Frank: Thanks, Sheryl. Sheryl: Honey. Frank: So, Sheryl, I couldnt help noticing Dwayne has stopped speaking. Sheryl: Oh, yeah, hes taken a vow of silence (哑誓).Frank: Youve taken a vow of silence?Sheryl: Yeah. Hes gonna join the Air Force Academy(空军军官学校), become a test pilot(试飞员)and hes taken a vow of silence until he reaches that goal.Frank: Youre kidding?Olive: Hi, Uncle Frank. Frank: Oh, hey, Olive. Wow, youre gettin big. Almost like a real person. Olive: What happened to your arms? Sheryl: Olive.Frank: Thats all right. I had a little accident. I am Okay. Richard: Hows the uh, routine coming, honey? Olive: Its good. Richard: Yeah? When are you going to show it to us?Olive: I dont know. Its up to Grandpa. Grandpa: A couple of days. It still needs work. Whats that? Chicken? Every night its the fuckin chicken! Holy God Almighty(老天爷)! It is possible just onceRichard: Dad!Grandpa: we could get something to eat for dinner around here thats not the goddamn fucking chicken?Richard: Hey, Dad! Grandpa: Im just sayin- Richard: Dad!Grandpa: Christ.Richard: Whenever you want to start cooking your own food, youre more than welcome. Grandpa: At Sunset Manor, you know. Richard: If you liked Sunset Manor so much, you shouldnt have gotten yourself kicked out of there, right?Grandpa: For Gods sake. Frank: So when did you start with the vow?Richard: Been nine months, Frank. He hasnt said a word. Not one. I think it shows tremendous discipline. Sheryl: Richard.Richard: I really do. Really. I think we could learn something from Dwayne. Dwayne has a goal. He has a dream. It may not be my dream, may not be yours But hes pursuing it with great conviction and focus. In fact, I was thinking about the nine steps-Grandpa: Oh, for crying out loud!Richard: about the nine steps and how Dwaynes utilizing at least seven of them in his personal quest to his self-fulfillment. Sheryl: Richard, please. Richard: Well, Im just saying Ive come around. I think he could use our support. Olive: How did it happen?Frank: How did what happen?Olive: Your accident. Sheryl: Honey, here. Frank: Oh, no, its okay. Unless you object. Sheryl: No, Im Im pro-honesty(赞成实话实说)here. I just think, you know, its up to you. Frank: Be my guest. Sheryl: Olive, um, Uncle Frank didnt really have an accident. What happened was he tried to kill himself. Olive: You did? Why?Richard: Er . er . Im sorry. I dont think this is an appropriate conversation. Honey, lets let Uncle Frank finish his dinner, okay? Shh.Olive: Why did you want to kill yourself?Richard: No, dont answer the question, Frank. Sheryl: Richard! Richard! Richard: Hes not gonna answer the question. Frank.Frank: I wanted to kill myselfRichard: Dont listen to him. Hes sick.Sheryl: Richard!Frank: because I was very unhappy. Richard: Hes a sick man. Hes sick in his head. Sheryl: Richard!Richard: Im sorry. I dont think its an appropriate conversation for a seven-year-old.Sheryl: Well, shes gonna find out anyway. Richard: Okay.Sheryl: Go on, Frank. Olive: Why were you unhappy?Frank: Um, well, therere a lot of reasons. Mainly, though, I fell in love with someone who didnt love me back.Olive: Who?Frank: One of my grad students. I was very much in love with him.Olive: Him? It was a boy. You fell in love with a boy?Frank: Yes, I did. Very much so. Olive: Thats silly. Frank: Youre right. It was silly. It was very, very silly. Grandpa: Theres another word for it.Richard: Dad!Olive: So thats when you tried to kill yourself?Frank: Well, no. The boy that I was in love with fell in love with another man Larry Sugarman. Sheryl: Whos Larry Sugarman?Frank: Larry Sugarman is, perhaps the second most highly regarded Proust scholar in the U.S.Richard: Whos number one?Frank: That would be me, Rich.Richard: Really?Frank: Mm-hmm.Olive: So thats when.Frank: No. What happened was I was a bit upset, so I said some things that I shouldnt have said and I did some things that I shouldnt have done and subsequently I was fired from my job and forced to move out of my apartment and move into a motel.Olive: And thats when you tried to-Frank: Well, no. Actually, all of that was okay. What happened was two days ago the MacArthur Foundation, in its infinite wisdom awarded a genius grant to Larry Sugarman. And thats when I-Grandpa: Decided to check out early.Frank: Yes. Yes. And I failed at that as well. Richard: Olive, the important thing to understand here is that Uncle Frank gave up on(放弃) himself. He made a series of foolish choices - Im sorry- and he gave up on himselfwhich is something that winners never do.Sheryl: So, thats the story, okay? Now, everyone, just lets move on and uh-Frank: Is he always like this? How can you stand it?Richard: Olive, tell him about the routine, why youre doing this.Olive: Okay. Little Miss Chili Pepper(红辣椒小姐选美赛)is a beauty contest for everyone in Albuquerque(美国新墨西哥州中部城市), but you have to be six or seven and you have to be a girl.Sheryl: This is our sister.Richard: Cindy. Sheryl: Spring break. Dwayne went to see his dad in Florida for two weeks and Olive went to Laguna to see her cousins. She made it to the top of the regionals out there.Olive: I was in second place. Frank: Well, what do you think your chances are?Olive: I think I can win, because some of the other girls theyve been doing it longer, but I practice every day. Frank: Yeah. Good luck. Richard: Not about good luck, Frank. Luck is the name losers give to their own failings. Its about wanting to win, willing yourself to win. Youve got to want it badder than anybody else.Olive: I do. Richard: Then youre gonna be a winner.Sheryl: Richard.Richard: Its the truth. You know, actually, there is a message from Cindy on the machine. Something about Little Mrs Sunshine. Sunshine.Olive: What? Little Miss Sunshine?Richard: Yeah. Olive: What?Machine: Sheryl, its Cindy. Remember when Olive was here last month? She was runner-up in the regional Little Miss Sunshine? They just called right now. The girl who won had to forfeit her crown. I dont know why. Something about diet pills(减肥药丸). Anyway, now she has a place in the state contest in Redondo Beach(雷德诺多海岸).Olive: Ahh- Oh, my gosh(天哪). I won! I won! I won! I won!Richard: Finish your dinner!Olive: Im finished!Grandpa: What happened?Sheryl: Im just calling to- Cindy! Yeah, we just got it. Yeah, she basically went crazy.Olive: I won! I won! I won!Sheryl: No, I didnt get that. The machine cut you off. Okay. Redondo Beach. This Sunday? Wh- Are you guys going?Richard: Yes. Sheryl: Can you put it off?Richard: They have to. They have to. Sheryl: Where does that leave us?Richard: We cant do it. We cant.Sheryl: No, no- No, I understand that, Cindy. Yeah. Richard: They-Sheryl: I just- no, Ill just figure it out. Okay, bye-bye. Richard: Its this Sunday? Why cant Jeff and Cindy take her?Sheryl: They have some equestrian thing in Santa Barbara(圣芭芭拉). Richard: You know, they do that horse shit(事情,玩意儿)every single weekend.Sheryl: Well, its the nationals(全国性比赛). Theyre taking both horses, so apparently it is a big deal. Richard: What about Olive?Olive: Little Miss Sunshine! Little Miss Sunshine! I won! I won! Im going! Were going!Richard: You promised?Sheryl: Well fly out(坐飞机去)and come back Monday.Richard: How are you gonna get around(走动,旅行)out there?Sheryl: Well rent a car. Richard: And stay at a hotel?Sheryl: We can afford it. Richard: Sheryl, this is our seed money.Sheryl: Well, if I had a little help bringin it in(挣钱).Richard: Dont start that.Sheryl: It all goes to your nine steps.Richard: I told you Im gonna talk to Stan Grossman! Were gonna get locked and loaded on this deal(谈妥这笔生易)and start generating some income! But in the meantime weve gotta be-Sheryl: Okay! Okay! Well drive. Grandpa: Im not drivin.Richard: How are you gonna fit Grandpa in the Miata(马自达车)?Sheryl: Well, Grandpa does not have to come.Grandpa: What? I coached her! I gave her the moves(教她舞步). I gotta go.Richard: Why dont you take the V. W. ? Sheryl: I cannot drive a shift(手动档车), Richard. I tried, and I cannot do it. Well fly there. Richard: We cant afford it.Sheryl: Well, thats what were gonna do unless you have a better idea. Here. This is dessert.Olive: I won! I won! I won! I won! I won! I won! I won! Little Miss Sunshine! Little Miss Sunshine! Little Miss Sunshine!Richard: All right. Ill drive the bus.Sheryl: Richard, I was told explicitly not to leave Frank by himself. No offense, Frank. Frank: None taken.Grandpa: Whatre you talkin about? You got Dwayne here. They can look after each other. Sheryl: No, Richard. Thats asking too much. If something happened-Richard: We cant go then, unless Dwayne and Frank go with us.Olive: Mum, wheres my bathing suit?Frank: Right. Sheryl: Frank?Olive: I found it!Frank: Okay.Olive: Im going! Im going! Im going!Sheryl: Oh, Dwayne, come on, please. Think of your sister.Richard: Come on, Dwayne. Itll be a lot of fun. You can go to the beach and-Dwayne: (written on paper) This is unfair. All I ask is that you leave me alone.Sheryl: Dwayne, flight school. I will give you permission for flight school. Olive: I won! I won! I won! I won! I won! Im gonna win this one too. Dwayne: (written on paper) But Im not going to have any fun.Richard: Yeah, were all with you on that one, Dwayne. Olive: Grandpa! Grandpa! Is Grandpa coming to California?Sheryl: Were all coming, honey.Richard: Hey, uh, hold on. Olive, come over here for a second. Come here. Sit down for a second. Look, theres no sense in entering a contest if you dont think youre gonna win. So do you think you can win Little Miss Sunshine?Sheryl: Richard.Richard: Are you gonna win?Olive: Yes. Richard: Were going to California.Reference Key to TasksTask 11) Because the doctor has told Sheryl not to leave him alone for fear that he will try to kill himself again.2) He has taken a vow of silence until he reaches his goalto join the Air Force Academy and become a test pilot.3) Hes a heroin addict, somewhat rude and foul-mouthed. But he loves Olive very much and has been coaching her in her talent routine.4) Frank has just been released from the hospital after a suicide attempt. He has suffered a series of humiliating failures both in his life and career: hes lost his lover as well as his job; his rival has been awarded a genius grant; hes even failed in killing himself.5) Because Richard thinks its inappropriate for Olive to hear about the suicide; in his eyes, only losers will give up on themselves, but Olive is going to be a winner.6) The girl who won the regional “Little Miss Sunshine” had to forfeit her crown for using diet pills and therefore Olive, the runner-up, has a place in the state Little Miss Sunshine pageant.7) Just to save money. He thinks it is too costly to fly out there, rent a car to get around and stay at the hotel; it will use up their seed money.8) It is Olives affirmative answer to his question “do you think you will win Little MissSunshine” that makes him finally decide to go to the pageant.Task 2 1) when 2) a bit upset 3) shouldnt have 4) subsequently 5) forced to 6) move into a motel 7) Actually 8) in its infinite wisdom 9) genius grant 10) check out 11) to understand 12) gave up on himself13) foolish choices 14) winners 15) the storyTask 3 1) No. Richard thinks Dwayne is pursuing his dream with great conviction and focus, utilizing seven of his nine steps to become a winner. But from the conversation about Dwayne, we can see that Dwayne is tired of his life and his family, and he has taken a vow of silence as an escape from all this. 2) Frank finds Richard is always imposing his ideas about becoming winners on everybody without considering their feelings, which is really annoying. Therefore, he wonders how Dwayne can stand his lectures every day. 3) On one hand, its probably because she has listened to his nine steps so many times that she is tired of it; on the other hand, she doesnt want Uncle Frank to get hurt by what he says. 4) Yes, they finally agree to go the pageant together. I think it is basically their love for Olive that leads them to such a decision, although their reasons for going to the pageant vary: Richard wants to see Olive win; Frank and Dwayne cannot be left behindone is suicidal, the other mute; Grandpa helps Olive rehearse the talent routine. Part II Listening ComprehensionDirections: In this part, you will hear two passages and one interview about winners and losers. Listen to each passage and the interview carefully and do the tasks as required. Passage 1 Born to WinEach human being is born as something new, something that has never existed before. Each is born with the capacity to win at life. Each has a unique way of seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and thinking. Each has his or her own unique potentialscapabilities and limitations. Each can be a significant, thinking, aware, and creative beinga productive person, a winner. The words “winner” and “loser” have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who makes someone else lose. To us, a winner is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of society.Winners do not dedicate their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be; rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence and manipulating others. They are aware that there is a difference between being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable. Winners do not need to hide behind a mask.Winners are not afraid to do their own thinking or to use their own knowledge. They can separate facts from opinions and they dont pretend to have all the answers. They listen to others, evaluate what they say, but come to their own conclusions. Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound, or awed by them. Winners do not play “helpless”, nor do they play the blaming game. Instead, they assume responsibility for their own lives. They dont give others a false authority over them. Winners are their own bosses and they know it. A winners timing is right. Winners respond appropriately to the situation. Their responses are related to the message sent and they preserve the significance, worth, well-being, and dignity of the people involved. Winners know that for everything there is a season and for every activity a time.Although winners can freely enjoy themselves, they can
