measured by the ability to overcome adversity(逆境). but it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try. j. k. rowling, author of the harry potter book series, began writing at age 6. in her biography(传记), she remembers with great fondness when her good friend-sean became the first person to encourage her and help her build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer. “he was the first person with whom i really discussed my serious ambition(志向) to be a writer. he was also the only person who thought i was bound to(注定)be a success at it, which meant much more to me than i ever told him at the time.” though there were many difficulties, rowling continued her writing, particularly fantasy stories. but it wasnt until l990 that she first came up with the idea about harry potter. as she recalls(回忆), it was on a long train journey from london to manchester that “the idea of harry potter simply fell into my head. to my great disappointment, i didnt have a pen with me, and i was too shy to ask anybody if i could borrow one. i think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because i simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details came up in my brain, and this thin, black-haired, bespectacled(戴眼镜的)boy who didnt know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.” that same year, her mother died after a ten-year fight with serious diseases, which deeply affected her writing. she went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards. during this time, rowling was diagnosed with depression. unemployed, she finished her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. after being refused by l2 publishing houses, the first harry potter novel was sold to a small british publishing house. now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages, j. k. rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. and it all began with her friends encouragement as well as her ambition to write.25 .who believed j. k. rowling was to be a good writer?aher friend sean.bher mother. cher daughter. dher husband.26. rowling first came up with the idea about harry potter_.aat the age of 6 bon a train journey cafter her mothers deathdin her secondary school27. she felt disappointed on the train because_.aher train was delayed for four hours bshe didnt have a pen with hercher mind suddenly went blank dno one would offer her help28. it can be concluded from paragraph 5 and 6 that rowling is_.a.open-mindedb.warm-hearted cgood-natured dstrong-willedcmost people say “yes” much more readily than “no”. a friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. but, what you really wanted was a couple of quiet days relaxing at home. or a roommate spends the entire weekends playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for “reference”. but, youve just finished it after taking a whole day to work hard. many people say “yes” to these kinds of requests. they tend not to consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards. saying “no” requires courage and considerable practice, in fact, according to psychologists. “everyone wants to be liked,” says gabriele steinki, a german psychologist. “saying no risks losing the affection of the person asking the favor or even ajob.” the result is that many people say “yes” just for keeping the peace. but experts say this is regrettable. anyone should have the right to say “no”. in fact, rejecting a request can even help to strengthen a relationship because it expresses a true feeling. but, for people used to agreeing to every request, changing can be a long and uncomfortable learning process. most people believe that “if i say no, ill lose the affection of the person. but the affection is important to me.” this way of thinking can be replaced by this: “if he only likes me because i always do what suits him , then the price ofhisaffection is too high in the long term.”steinki says the key is talking to the other person to find a mutual (相互的) solution.“one needs to present the situationfromones own point of view, and to suggest how the situation can be dealt with to the advantage of both parties. the other person must have the feeling thathisinterests are being considered.” when the refusal is not accepted, steinki advises giving the reasons calmly again until the person gets the message.29. most people say “yes” much more readily than “no” because _. a. they dont care about their own interests and feelings b. they dont know they will regret afterwardsc. they have already been used to saying “yes”d. they care more about others affection30. in the opinion of experts, _ . a. people need a lot of practice to say “no” b. people should say “yes” to keep the peace c. saying “no” means losing ajob d. people have the right to be liked31. what is the best title of the thought long and hard about it and its true. i would be a different person if my mom hadnt turned a silly bicycle accessory into a life lesson i carry with me today.my mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. looking back, i honestly dont know how she did it. managing the family budget must have been a very hard task., but she made it look effortless. if we complained about not having what another kid did, wed hear something like, “i dont care what so and so got for his birthday, you are not getting a tv in your room a car for your birthday a sweet 16 party.” we had to earn our allowance by doing chores around the house. i can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table.my brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house .like the two little girls growing up at the white house,we made our own beds (no one left the house until that was done)and picked up after ourselves.we had to keep track of our belongings ,and if something was lost ,it was not replaced. it was summer and ,one day ,my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed-and there it was in the window, white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers ,the basket winked at me and i knew -i knew-i had to have it. “its beautiful,” my mother said when i pointed it out to her,”what a neat basket.”i tried to hold off at first ,i played it cool for a short while.but then i guess i couldnt do it any longer:“mon, please can i please ,please get it? i ll do extra chores for as long as you say, ill do anything ,but i need that basket,i love that basket.please ,mom .please?” i was desperate.“you know,” she said ,gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what i believes was the coolest thing ever,”if you save up you could buy this yourself.”“by the time i make enough itll bu gone!”“maybe roger here could hold it for you,” she smiled at roger ,the bike guy.“he cant hold it for that long ,mom .someone else will buy it .please, mom, please?”“there might be another way,”she said.and so our paying plan unfolded.my mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some hiding place i couldnt find.each week i eagerly counted my growing saving increased by extra work here and there (washing the car ,helping my mother make dinner, delivering or collecting things on my bike that already looked naked without the basket in front).and then ,weeks later ,i counted ,re-counted and jumped for joy. oh ,happy day ! i made it! i finally had the exact amount wed agreed upon.days later the unthinkable happened. a neighborhood girl id played with millions of times appeared with the exact same basket fixed to her shiny ,new bike that already had all the bells and whistles. i rode hard and fast home to tell my mother about this disaster.this horrible turn of events.and then came the lesson . ive taken with me through my life:”honey, your basket is extra-special,” mom said, gently wiping away my hot tears.”your basket is special because you paid for it yourself.”32.what can we learn from the first two paragraphs?a. the children enjoyed doing
