Unit3 CelebrationHistoryofMothersDayIntheUSMothersDayisaholidaycelebratedonthesecondSundayinMay.Itisadaywhenchildrenhonortheirmotherswithcards,gifts,andflowers.Thefirstobservance(庆祝) ofMothersDayinPhiladelphiain1907isbasedonsuggestionsbyJuliaWardHowein1872andbyAnaJarvisin1907.AlthoughitwasntcelebratedintheUSuntil1907,thereweredayshonoringmotherseveninthedaysofancientGreece.Inthosedays,however,itwasRhea,theMotherofthegods,thatwasgivenhonor.Later,inthe1600s,inEnglandtherewasanannual(年度的) observancecalled“MotheringSunday”.ItwascelebratedduringJune,onthefourthSunday.OnMotheringSunday,theservants,whogenerallylivedwiththeiremployers,wereencouragedtoreturnhomeandhonortheirmothers.Itwastraditionalforthemtobringaspecialcakealongtocelebratetheoccasion.IntheUS,in1907AnaJarvis,fromPhiladelphia,beganacampaign(运动)
