Introduction 1. What is literature? literature is a permanent expression in words of some thoughts or feelings or ideas about life & the world.2. What is the usefulness of studying (English) Literature?(1) Increasing ones knowledge (2) Improving ones language ability. (3) Training ones thinking.(4) Fostering ones connoisseurship (the ability to appreciate a work of art)(5) Exerting a favorable influence on a persons feeling or character (or making us be better people; in other words., English literature is something from which we get moral education)(6) Enjoying oneself.(7) Enabling one to get more education or to appear well educated. etc.Someone says literature makes one romantic and linguistics makes one rational. 3. The Objectives of this course (1) Enable the students to get a general idea about the development or history of English literature; (2) Enable the students to get a general idea about the major genres of English literature in different times, and also the major works of major authors; (3) Cultivate the literary taste of the students. (4) Enrich the students knowledge. (5) Foster the students abilities of study.How to study literature? English literature has a long history and contains much wealth. To learn it well, we need to pay attention to the following points:Historical Development will help you remember things, because each period is characterized with its own historical and artistic features. Historical background helps us understand the theme of works, the characters personality, etc. Characteristics of a period and individual writers and works (their themes, characters, contents, artistic features and so on)Literary terms: definitions of some special terms concerning with literature.Read the original if possible4. Historical BackgroundConsequence of Roman conquestWith the Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain, the history of English literature began.Anglo-Saxons were Christianized in the 7th century. Before Christianization, Anglo-Saxons believed in old northern European mythologies.The Christianization of Anglo-Saxons influenced the record of old English literature. Characteristics of Anglo-Saxon Literature2. Beowulf National epic of English peopleEpic: A long narrative poem telling about the deeds of a great hero and reflecting the values of the society from which it originated.
