HIV HIVisaretrovirusofenormousmedicalconcern Becauseofevolutionarystudies weknowthattwoseparatelineagesofthisretroviruspassedintothehumanpopulationfromAfricanApesinthemid20thcentury Thisknowledgehasalertedustothedangerofemergentdiseasesfromotheranimalhosts areasonforourconcernaboutSARSandbirdflu Inaddition itisanunderstandingofevolutionarybiologythathasenabledustodevelopatherapyforHIV Theso called tripletherapy HIVtreatmentisanexampleofevolutionarymedicine
