高二英语限时阅读训练(七) A.At the top of a three-story brick building, Sue and Johnsy had their studio. One of the girls was from Maine; the other from California. They had met in an Eighth Street restaurant, and found their tastes in art, chicory salad and bishop sleeves so much in tune that the joint studio(画室) resulted. That was in May. In November, a cold, unseen stranger, whom the doctors called “pneumonia”, stalked about the district, touching one here and there with his icy fingers. Johnsy was among his victims. One morning the busy doctor invited Sue into the hallway with a bushy, gray eyebrow. “She has one chance in ten,” he said. “And that chance is for her to want to live. Your little lady has made up her mind that shes not going to get well. Has she anything on her mind?” “She wanted to paint the Bay of Naples some day,” said Sue. “Paint? Bosh! Has she anything on her mind worth thinking about twice? A man, for instance?”“No, doctor; there is nothing of the kind.” “Well,” said the doctor. “I will do all that science can accomplish. But whenever my patient begins to count the carriage in her funeral procession, I subtract 50 per cent from the power of medicines.” After the doctor had gone, Sue cried. Johnsy lay, scarcely making a movement under the bedclothes, with her face toward the window. She was looking out and countingcounting backward. “Twelve,” she said, and a little later “eleven,” and then “ten,” and “nine,” and then “eight, and “seven,” almost together. Sue looked out of the window. What was there to count? There was only a bare, depressing yard to be seen, and an old, old ivy vine climbed half way up the brick wall of the brick house. The cold breath of autumn had blown away its leaves, leaving it almost bare. “Six,” said Johnsy, in almost a whisper. “Theyre falling faster now. Three days ago there were almost a hundred. It made my head ache to count them. But now its easy. There goes another one. There are only five left now.” “Five what, dear?” “Leaves, on the ivy vine. When the last one falls I must go, too. Ive known that for three days. Didnt the doctor tell you?” “Oh, Ive never heard of such nonsense. Dont be so silly. Why, the doctor told me this morning that your chances for getting well soon were ten to one! Try to take some soup now, and let Sue go and buy pork chops for her sick child.”56. Known as the “Photoshop Law”, it also requires that agencies tell their audience if theyve digitally changed pictures to make models look thinner. The new law forbids the use of models with a body mass index of 18.5 or less, a standard based on internationally accepted measures. The figure matches the set of fixed limits by the U. S. Department of Health. The law doesnt set a money amount that can be gained in court from such a suit. Lawmakers realize that it may be a long and difficult process to prove in court that a company broke the new law, but they feel that simply having the law in place will accomplish what they want; stopping advertising companies from continuing to influence Israelis with images of unhealthy-looking models as the gold standard of beauty. Some modeling agencies in Israel arent happy. They say that the indexes on which the law is based are arbitrary and are not appropriate for every model. Many models who are totally healthy girls might be disqualified because of the law. Some models are naturally thin and unable to gain weight and the new law would unfairly prevent them from finding jobs. However, plus-size American supermodel Emme told CNN that she thinks the law will cause other countries to make similar measures against showing underweight models. “I think this is fantastic because so many young women and men are suffering to look in a way that is unrealistic and unhealthy,” she said.60.What is “Photoshop Law” about?A. D.Technology has totally transformed our ability to communicate with each other. Linking to each other both literally and figuratively, many of us connect through cell phones, email, instant messaging, blogs, and networking web sites, yet we may be less connected to each other than we think.According to a study, Americans are becoming increasingly socially isolated(孤立的). The study suggests, for example, that one quarter of Americans say that they have no one to discuss important personal issues with, and that the number of close friends that Americans have has dropped from three to two. Meanwhile, the Boston Globe reports that this spreading isolation is experienced more sharply among those with less education, people of color, and older Americans. Unsurprisingly, those who are young, white, and well educated tend to have stronger social networks. From my own experience I have to say that Ive never felt more connected, thanks to a web of friends, family, and colleagues. One of my closest friends is someone I met through an online discussion group who lives hundreds of miles away from me. We have met face-to-face only twice, yet our regular electronic correspondence and cell phone calls maintain our close friendship. And, speaking of blogging, my blog has introduced me to people I would never have met otherwise and has led to enduring and important friendships. On the other hand, I recently saw a scene unfold that proved to me how deeply disconnected we as Americans have become. I had just wrapped up a presentation on mediation at a family therapy (治疗) center. As I was leaving, I noticed a mother and her teenage son who had just completed their session with their family therapist
