I stayed with her for a week and then flew back home. Her dying process is anything but “peaceful”, making me physically ill. I had some “quiet time” with her to say my goodbyes and try to let her know it was time for her to be at peace, but as time wore on, I couldnt stand it anymore. I feel like I would be changed forever if I continued to witness this. However, I also feel extremely guilty about “abandoning” her during her last days. More background: my mom went through treatment up to a few days before she was admitted to a hospital. After a month, she was moved to hospice once we finally realized she was dying. This last step has been a blow to us because she was so “normal” up until her fall, so although we knew we would eventually be in this place, we didnt expect it NOW. I am the youngest of 3 kids, but my mom and I have always had a very close relationship, although we live 2,000 miles away from each other. The problem I have is that I hear so many people say that there is “no way” they would leave their mothers side on her deathbed and I thought I would be the same way, but I just lost it and came home. I feel like I am justifying coming back, even though nobody is judging me!I have contemplated flying back to her, just so I can be there but in reality, Im torn. I want to be there, but I dont want to see or hear her death. Please help me figure out a way to reduce my guilt.21. How can I forgive myself? D. To leave or to stay? BThroughout the years, there have been quite a few apps that have been banned from App Store. Usually it has something to do with these features-not working or the app changing private users information. Recently, there have been other reasons for banning apps. As odd as it may sound(not really), when you create an app that measures how high you can throw your iPhone, apparently Apple doesnt like it. The application in question is called Send Me To Heaven, and its probably one of the most notoriously idiotic apps you could have previously download from the App Store. Theres no doubt that Apple banned it from their store, but with the attention that its now getting, people are going to want to check it out. If you think about it, and if you decide to check out how high you can throw your iPhone, well, you dont even deserve an iPhone or a smartphone. Thats at least true according to Apple, who banned the app as soon as people started complaining about their iPhones breaking when they werent caught on the way down. Lets just say if youre stupid enough to even want to see how high you can throw your smartphone, maybe you shouldnt have a smartphone in the first case.Apples motivation for banning the app was that it was “encouraging behaviour that could result in damage to the users device”. The interesting part is that the app is still available to Android users in the Play Store. Apprently Google doesnt share the same opinion about a game that challenges you to see how high you can throw your smartphone. People always come up with the most unearthly ideas for apps, and this one, even though its ultimately useless, is as creative as any other application available. It just doesnt fit the device it is installed on. What do you think? Its very ridiculous to throw your smartphone into the air, and it will most likely cause it to break. 25. Apple forbids some apps in that _.A. these apps are not produced by Apple B. these apps fail to identify iPhonesC. these apps steal Apples information D. these apps are thought poor in running 26. What does the underlined part mean in the passage?A. The most widely accepted app. B. The most foolish app. C. The fairly useful app. D. The latest produced app.27. What is the authors attitude to “Send Me To Heaven”?A. Supportive B. Indifferent C. Negative D. Confused28. Which of the following can summarize the passage?A. How high can you throw your iPhone? B. How much are you fond of your iPhone?C. How soon will your iPhone break? D. How interesting does the app sound?CAccording to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the U.K. has about 7.7 million families with dependent children, of which 3.7 million have just one child, compared to 3 million with two and 1.1 million with three children or more. The number of families today with just one dependent child is now 47 percent and will likely rise to more than 50 percent in a decade. As the ONS confirms, “It appears that families are getting smaller.” One obvious reason for this could be that women are putting off having children until they have established careers when they are bound to be less fertile. But it could just as well be a matter of choice. Parents must consider the rising cost of living, combined with economic uncertainty and an increasingly difficult job market. And this trend may continue growing as having an only child becomes more normal, which seems to be the mood on the mothers online forum Mumsnet, where one member announced that she “just wanted to start a positive thread about how fab it is to have an only child”. She had received 231 replies, overwhelmingly in the same upbeat spirit. Parents of only children insist there are plenty of benefits. Nicola Kelly, a writer and lecturer who grew up as an only child and is now a married mother of one, says her 15-year-old son seems more grown-up in many ways than his contemporaries. Not all products of single-child families are as keen to repeat the experience. In a recent account journalist Janice Turner wrote about her own keenness to “squeeze out two sons just 22 months apart” as a reaction to her only-child upbringing. She was placed on a pedestal by her doting parents, whom she punished with a “brattish, wilful” rejection of everything they stood for. Desperate for a close friend she was repeatedly shattered by rejection and refers to her childhood as being “misery”. Writer and clinician Dr. Dorothy Rowe, a member of the British Psychological Society, says that we all interpret events in our own individual way and there are some children who feel slighted no matter what their circumstances are, while other children see the advantages of their situation. However, the one part of life that is unlikely to get any easier for only children is when they grow up and find themselves looking after their own parents as they become older.29. The passage is written with the purpose of _. A. presenting us with different opinions about having an only childB. analyzing the reasons why having an only child becomes popularC. illustrating the strength and weakness of having an only childD. guiding people to look at the same issue from different perspectives30. From what Dr. Dorothy Rowe said, we know that _. A. journalist Janice Turner experienced a miserable childhoodB. some are unable to make an objective assessment of their conditionsC. its necessary for us to look at the event from our own angleD. she has a positive attitude towards Janice Turners reaction31. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Nearly half of families intend to have just one child. B. Some people fail to recognize the advantage of having an only child.C. Not all people brought up in an only-child family stand for the idea of having an only child. D. People brought up in an only child family resist downsizing the family. 32.
