文档简介

1Hi, everyone! I will graduate from high school in June. Some of my foreign friends have asked me about the process of entering an American university, so here I will tell you how it works.First you have to choose which university you want to attend. This is not easy, as there are over 3,000 universities and colleges in the USA. Do you want to stay near home, or do you want to go far away? What do you want to study? Once you have decided what is important to you, I would suggest choosing about five schools to apply to. This way, if one or two schools do not accept you, you still have a chance of being accepted by the others. After you have chosen which schools you would like to apply to, you have to complete an application form for each one. You also need to ask two or three of your teachers to write letters to the universities explaining why you would be a good university student. For many people, the worst part of applying for university is taking tests. Depending on which college or university you want to enter, you have to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), which tests your language, math and writing skills, or the American College Test (ACT), which tests your knowledge in English, math, science and history. After you have been accepted to a university, you need to be able to pay for your study there. To help students pay for their education, the government offers loans which students do not have to repay until after they graduate. Scholarships are also available to students who have excellent grades, are good athletes or have financial needs. Because university tuition is so expensive, many students also work part-time while they are at university.University courses are quite different from classes at high school. You only attend each class two or three times a week, you have to study a lot more outside of class. Classes are much bigger too and some can have as many as 200 students in them. There will be many new things to learn, but I think I will enjoy university.Title: How to 1. for a new lifeMain ItemsContextChoosing universityIt is not 2. to choose only one or two universities to apply to. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world ignore its importance. As a result, sleep problems are increasingly common. In 2002, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece conducted a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Of the people that responded to the survey, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, and based on their responses, 31.6 percent were diagnosed with insomnia(失眠) and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline insomnia. In addition, 30.7 percent of survey respondents reported visiting a doctor for help with sleep problems and 11.6 per cent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.Overall, the survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples of which are being unable to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. The main factors causing these problems are pressure from school or work and a fast pace of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also interfere with sleep and contribute to poor quality sleep. The surveys findings are particularly troubling because large numbers of people were found to have difficulty sleeping at night. The short-term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating. If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase. There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping. Getting a good nights sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.Title: Celebrating SleepTopicContextThe purpose of World Sleep DayTo bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems worldwide.Findings of a survey Of 3, 5000 people in 10 countries in the world, there were 24 percent of the people saying they didnt sleep well.31.6 percent were diagnosed with insomnia and another 17.5 percent were on the 3 of sleeplessness. The percentage of the people feeling sleepy during the day is 11.6.30.7 percent reported 4 _ to a doctor for sleep problems.1 causing sleep problems & their consequences Under 5 _ from school or work, people may have sleep problems. So far, no cure has been found for it. In the early mid-1980s, while other parts of the world were beginning to deal with the serious disease, Asia remained relatively unaffected by this newly discovered health problem. By the early 1990s, however, HIV and AIDS had hit several Asian countries, and by the end of that decade, HIV was spreading rapidly in many areas of the continent. Today, HIV and AIDS are a growing problem in every region of Asia. The latest statistics produced by UNAIDS suggest that in 2008, over 5 million people were living with HIV or AIDS in Asia.Various factors cause the spread of HIV, including poverty, inequality, unequal status of women, cultural myths about sex and high levels of migration(移民). Although its useful to understand the situation of AIDS in Asia as a whole, each country in the region faces a different situation. In Cambodia and Thailand, there has been evidence of declines in HIV infection levels. In Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam, meanwhile, the number of people living with HIV has rapidly increased. In China, the number of people newly infected with HIV and AIDS is also rising, although at a much slower pace.Much improvement is needed to prevent HIV and AIDS around Asia. New guidelines and policy documents have been continually issued over the years. Most of the successful programs do have at least three features in common. Firstly, these programs encourage HIV and AIDS education among the general population to teach people how to avoid infection and to face discrimination. Secondly, they are very practical and they involve the infected people themselves in program design and implementation(实施). Last but not least, strong leadership is essential for HIV prevention. If all of the leaders truly committed themselves to this cause, then a great many lives would be saved. They include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, bone loss, arthritis (关节炎), and depression. Walking also can help you lose weight.Fast walking is good for the heart. It lowers the blood pressure. It raises the amount of good cholesterol (胆固醇) in the blood. Researchers say walking can sharply reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack.Studies have also shown that walking for 30 minutes a day can delay and possibly prevent the development of diabetes. People who are overweight have an especially high risk to develop this disease. Walking strengthens the muscles and builds up the bones that they are attached to. Studies show that walking could decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis (骨质疏松症). Walking can also help ease the pain of arthritis in areas where bones are joined. This is because walking strengthens the muscles around the bones.Experts say walking is one of the safest ways to exercise. There is a low risk of injuries. So it is good for people who are starting an exercise program for the first time and for older people.A walking program is easy to start. You should wear loose clothes and good shoes. There are shoes that are designed especially for lots of walking. How fast should you walk? For the best effect, doctors say you should walk fast enough to cause you to breathe hard. Yet you should still be able to talk. Let your arms move freely while you walk. There are no rules to starting a walking program. You might walk short distances. Or you might walk up hills to strengthen your leg muscles. Health experts say you can gain the most from a walking program if you walk at about five kilometers an hour for 30 minutes a day. You should do this about five times a week.Walking to (1) _ fit(2) _ of walkingSuperiorities to other exercisesTips to walkersReducing the risk of a heart attack lowering the blood pressure raising good cholesterolBeing (5) _ than many other ways of exercise, especially for beginners or (6) _Wear loose clothes and good shoes.Walk fast enough to cause you to breathe with (8) _ but still able to talk.Controlling the development of diabetes helping you (3) _ weightWalk with your arms (9) _ freely.Decreasing the risk of osteoporosis and arthritis strengthening the muscles (4) _ up the bonesBeing easy to start (7) _ rulesWalk at a (10) _ of about 5 kilometers an hour for 30 minutes a day and 5 times a week.Lowering the risk of other diseases, such as stroke, depression and etc. 5In modern life, we require hard work to earn the money to gain the comfortable lifestyle. It is achieving the modern comforts that leads to stress. Many people find it so hard to just relax and manage stress better. Muscle tautening(拉紧)and relaxing technique includes several steps. First, find a time and place with no external (外界的)disturbances. Put on some pleasant music, place a mat on the floor, and lie down on it. Begin by tautening and relaxing your muscles in each part of your body. Then lie still and just relax, with your eyes closed, feeling your whole body and mind quieting down. You can sit in a peaceful and quiet position to try out mental imagining technique, in which mental imagery is used. Try and include all the senses such as sounds, colours, smells, etc. For example, image sitting by a mirror-calm, deep blue lake. Feel the gentle wind, smell the grass and trees around you, think of the silky-cool feel of the lake water. You use both mental imagery and awareness of the body for stress reduction in yogic(瑜珈的) relaxation technique. Sit in a cross legged position in a quiet place, and begin by relaxing each part of your body. Then focus on your breathing, slowing sit down. Take deep breaths in slowly, filling your lungs, and then exhale(呼出)completely, in a rhythmic manner. Once you get into a breathing rhythm, let your mind wander in a controlled fashion. Imagine peacefulness, calm, and quietness.Remember: itll take practice to master these relaxation techniques. Give yourself time and be patient, and before long youll begin experiencing the wonderful feeling of calm that will move through your body and mind. How to relax1_Achieving the modern comforts leads to stress.Relaxation2_Muscle tautening and relaxing techniqueFind a time and place 3._ external disturbances;4._pleasant music and lie down on a mat;Tauten and relax your muscle;Lie still and just relax.Mental5_techniqueStay in a peaceful and 6._position;Use mental imagery to enjoy nature around you.Yogic relaxationtechniqueSit in a quiet place with your legs7._;Relax your8._;Focus on your breathing;Let your mind 9_in quietness.EffectYoull 10_the calm move through your body and mind. 6 Ban Ki-moon was made the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations. In his speech at the ceremony of his taking office, he thanked all the Member States for placing confidence in him, and also expressed his deepest respect and appreciation to all the leaders and people of the Member States for their strong support. His remark about the former Secretary-General, who he said had guided their Organization into the 21st century and had made the UN truly vital to peace, prosperity and human dignity around the world, was particularly impressive. Mr. Ban Ki-moon stated in his speech that he had already made up his mind to build upon the already-made achievements of the UN.The new Secretary-General thinks the UN is needed now more than ever before. The UNs major task in the previous century was to keep countries from fighting each other. In the new century, it is very clear that the UNs most important task is to strengthen the inter-state system so that humanity may be better served. We need competent and responsible states to meet the needs of “we the peoples” for whom the UN was created. And the worlds peoples will not be fully served unless peace, development and human rights, the three pillars of the UN, are advanced together with great efforts and equal determination. As the new Secretary-General, he is not as proud as people thought he might be. He said he was far from perfect and he would need the support, cooperation and trust from all the Member States. And he faithfully promised to serve them well, with all of his heart and to the best of his abilities. There is also something exciting he said about young people. Its his hope that young boys and girls of today will grow up knowing that the UN is working hard to build a better future for them. As Secretary-General, he will hold their hopes and hear their demands.Main aspects in Ban Ki-moons speechExpressing his (71) _to the Member States for feeling (72)_ of him and being supportiveto the former Secretary-General for the (73) _ he has made to the UNHis understanding of the UNs major tasksin the (74) _ century, to keep countries from fighting each otherin the new century, to (75) _ the cooperation between countriesto meet the needs of the whole worldHis commitments and expectationsto be supported, cooperated and (76) _ by all the Member Statesto work for the UN heart and (77) _to make young people fully (78) _ of the UNs mission(革命)What do we know about Ban Ki-moon?He is an important role in the world. According to the International Society of Arboriculture(树木培植), hospital patients have been shown to recover faster when they are given a view with trees. Also, while trees certainly benefit any landscape, whether lining streets, decorating urban areas, or growing naturally in the forest, they are actually important in our daily lives.Trees improve the quality of the air around us by absorbing dust and other particles(颗粒物). Their leaves also absorb harmful gases before we have a chance to take them in. They also protect us from the sun, rain, hail(冰雹), and snow, which can quickly damage unprotected homes. Even better, they give o
