Literature ReviewOn Bibles Influence on the narrative of Uncle Toms Cabin Uncle Toms Cabin, as the American writer Harriet Beecher Stowes most famous work, was considered as the most influential anti-slavery novel in that period. When published, it caused great social repercussions. The novel described the different experiences of different characters in different pursuits, and revealed the ugly face of the slavery. To a large extent, it pushed forward the American civil war to break out. Even President Abraham Lincoln is said to have remarked when meeting Mrs. Stowe for the first time in the White House “So you are the little woman who started this Great War”. When reading the novel, people pay much attention to the analysis of main characters, the feminism, the novels influence in the history, or the theme, etc. Here is a brief review of the analysis on Uncle Toms Cabin.1. The Main Content of Uncle Toms CabinUncle Toms Cabin was set in the south in the 1800s and began with the story of Tom. Tom was a slave of Mr. Shelby who was a slaveholder in Kentucky and he sincerely believed in Christianity. Once encumbered by debt, Mr. Shelby decided to sell Tom and another female slave and her son. Knowing the news, Eliza and her son ran immediately but Tom would stay to be sold to Haleya slaver. As a result, he was sold to New Orleans by Haley. On board the boat bound for New Orleans, Tom saved the life of young Eva. St. Clare, Evas father, purchased Tom with gratitude. In St. Clares home, Tom lived a happy life for two years. Eva and he became good friends. But after Eva and her fathers death, Toms fate was changed again. He was sent by Evas mother to an auction market to sell. Tom was bought by a slaveholder named Legree. Legree was cruel to slaves and addicted to alcohol. At last, when Tom protected two female slaves from being captured, he was beaten to death viciously by Legree. When he was dying, his former masters sonGeorge Shelby got the plantation and bought Toms body with huge wealth. At the same time, Eliza and her son met her husbandGeorge Harris, who disguised himself as a Spaniard and brought a gun with himself. He shot a slaver on his way to Canada. At last, he and his family got together in the Canada and finally immigrated to Liberia.2. Previous studies on Uncle Toms Cabin2.1 The study on main characters of the novelSome scholars made a detailed analysis about the main characters in this novel. The characters they often analyze are Tom, little Eva and Legree. Tom is a person of loyalty. Though he is submissive to his master, he has the consciousness to define the right and wrong. He never helps his master do bad things which go against the Bible. Tom has a kind heart and dare to sacrifice. He is always willing to forgive others. On the contrary, Legree is a person of violence and hatred. Relevant essays include “An Analysis of the Character Tom in the Novel Uncle Toms Cabin”( Sha, 2010) and “An Analysis of the Main Characters in the Uncle Toms Cabin ”(Yang, 2005).2.2 The study from the perspective of feminism in the novelSome scholars studied the novel from the perspective of feminism. They hold the view that female play a vital role and they advise their husband or relatives to love black slaves and have a great influence on anti-slavery movement. In the traditional thinking, female were intellectually inferior to and less practical than male, but in Uncle Toms Cabin, females power could not be neglected. Eva and Emily Shelby are often taken for example. The followings are several papers in this perspective, such as “Feminism in Uncle Toms Cabin”(Cao, 2004), the paper which holds the view that Stowe had limitation concerning her views about women. However, no one should deny Uncle Toms Cabin is a dazzling effort to bring about redemption of the world through women. “On the Analysis of Female Redemption in Uncle Toms Cabin”(Chen, 2011) is also a paper in this aspect.2.3 The study on the historical influence of the novelSome scholars studied the historical influence of the novel. They commonly agreed that Uncle Toms Cabin is an anti-slavery novel. To a large extent, it pushed forward the American civil war to break out. American president Lincoln called Mrs. Stowe “a little woman who wrote a book that sparked a war”. The followings are several papers in this perspective, such as “On historical influence of Uncle Toms Cabin”(Kang, 2011) and “The Relation of Uncle Toms Cabin and War Between the States”(Meng, 2004) . 2.4 The study on the influence of Christianity on the novelSome scholars made a research on the influence of Christianity on the novel. They believe that Christianity has large effect on shaping many characters and even changes these characters destiny in Uncle Toms Cabin. Some people think that all the characters in Uncle Toms Cabin can be put into four categories: perfect Christians, imperfect Christians, half-Christians and non-Christians. Tom and Eva are those rare real Christians or perfect Christians who really live up to the principles of the Bible. Imperfect Christians include those like Mrs. Shelby and Miss Ophelia etc. They believe God, but their selfishness or hypocrisy prevents them from being good Christians. There are also some half-Christians or going-to-be Christians, such as St. Clare and Gorge Harris who are at beginning skeptical towards religion but later come nearer to God. While Simon Legree is a typical example of non-Christian whose tough nature refuses to be touched by any good word. With varying degrees to Christianity, these characters make different choices when coming across problems, thus eventually making the whole story complete and convincing. Therefore, it could be seen that Christianity has great influence on Uncle Toms Cabin. There are many papers analyzing “Uncle Toms Cabin” in this respect, such as “ The Influence of Christianity on Main Characters in Uncle Toms Cabin”(Wang, 2012) and “Religious Consciousness of Uncle Toms Cabin”(Qian, 2009) .2.5 The study in the aspect of Biblical Archetype in the novelSome scholars discussed how Biblical Archetype be applied in Uncle Toms Cabin. They compared Tom with Jesus in Bible. They thought that Toms experience is quite similar to that of Jesus Christ. First, Tom and Jesus are all sold by the man they are familiar with. Second, both Tom and Jesus have strong faith in God and never give up under pressure. Third, Tom and Jesus are all redeemed by the person who esteems them. Whats more , both of them often forgive others. Then, the little Eva is like an angle. In Bible, angle is sent y God to help and save those who needed, and the little Eva is such an angle who is full of love and try to help others. Elizas prototype is the Israel who flee from Egypt in Bible. Mothers like Mrs. Shelby, St. Clares mother and Legrees mother is as kind and devoted as Virgin Mary. Whats more, Legree is like a devil in Bible. His cruel overseers Qimbo and Sambo can also be easy to find the characters in Bible whose souls are saved by Jesus. Relevant articles include “Deconstruction of Biblical Archetype in Uncle Toms Cabin”(Wang, 2006)2.6 The study on the narrative of the novelSome scholars made a detailed analysis about the narrative of Uncle Toms Cabin. On the basis of Classical Narratology, they discover the effective narrative strategies in the novel and show readers the perfect combination of art and content in this work. The whole narrative perspective offers the author Mrs. Stowe a bluntly narrative voice , makes her dream of preaching achieved and also fully expresses her thought of abolitionism and her standpoint of feminism. A variety of narrative perspectives and narrative distances make the novel achieve the aesthetic effect of multi-level and multi-angle, telling readers a touching story with twists and turns. This narrative method not only to shapes vivid characters, but also shows a turbulent social panorama before American civil war. The followings are several essays in this perspective, “Narrative Strategy in Uncle Toms Cabin”(Li, 2011) and “Analysis of Structuralism in Uncle Toms Cabin”(Zeng,2009).3. Limitations of the previous studies and need for this studyMany researches on this novel have been carried out because this novel is one of the best works to study Harriet Beecher Stowe, to learn about the ugly face of the slavery, to understand the reality of the 19th century in the south in America and so on. By now, people from different academic perspectives have prudently studied Uncle Toms Cabin and have attained valuable achievements. Among all the studies, people always pay attention to the analysis of main characters in the novel, the feminism of the novel, its influence on the history, the influence of Christianity on the novel, the Biblical Archetype in the novel, or the narrative of the novel, etc. Admittedly, their studies have made great contributions to understanding this novel. However, the limitations of their studies are easily seen. The Bible influences western life and culture deeply, so did Mrs. Stowe. And the narrative art in the Bible is very interesting, but the studies have little research on Bibles influence on the novel in the aspect of the narrative. Therefore, I will make my efforts to try to analyze Bibles influence on the narrative of Uncle Toms Cabin in order to help readers understand the novel in the setting of the characters, the arrangement
