文档简介
The Value of Life In this semester I read the novel The Making of A Hero. The reason why I choose to read this novel is that its spiritual treasure benefits me a lot. In this novel a strong man was described whose name was Paul, a person who never gave up no matter what difficult he met. He had set a good example for us, especially we college students. Personally speaking, I strongly recommend that all of us should read this novel in detail. My limitted and general opinions about this masterpiece are divided into three parts. Firstly, I will give you a berief introduction about the author Alexeevich Ostrovsky. He was born on September 29, 1904 and died on December 22, 1936. He was a Soviet socialist writer, who published his work during the Stalin era. He is best known for his first novel The Making of a Hero on the Russian civil war. He was the fifth child of a military officer a daughter of Czech colonists. He attended the village church school until he was nine and then in 1913 he started working as a herds boy. In 1918, his errands for the local Bolshevik underground. In July 1918 he joined the Komsomolsk and the Red Army. In August in 1921 he began working in railway workshops of Kiev as an electrician and as the secretary of the local Komsomol district committee and in August 1924 he joined the Communist Party. He lost his vision because of his illness in 1929. In 1930 he began working for his first novel The Making of A Hero, which became renowned and influential in the communist world. He also wrote articles for newspapers and journal and spoken often on the radio. In April 1932 he became a member of the Moscow Branch of the Association of Proletarian writers and in June 1934, he joined in the Union of Soviet writer. On October 1, 1935 he was awarded the order of Lenin. He passed away on December 22, 1936, aged 22. In all his life, he wrote two famous novels. One is The Making of A Hero; Another is Child of the Storm.Secondly, Id like to tell the main idea of this novel. The novel mainly told us a strong man who named Paul and his great revolutionary spirit. He had an iron will never said to give up. During his short lifetime, he was always having precise dream for his life and future. When he was a child, he was always blamed or punished by the priest only for some unreasonable requirements or trifles. After he was discharged from school, he went to a local train station as a worker. Although he worked hard, he was fired. Then with his brothers help, he worked in an electricity power station. There he recognized Zhoukhrai, a member of the Red Army. He helped Paul know something about Bolshevik and communist. Thus he learned many things which he ever known before and they became good friends soon .Before long, Paul saved Zhoukhai by chance, but unluckily he was arrested by the Whites. After he escaped, he joined in the army. Later ,he was wounded by a bomb during a fighting and lost his conscience. However, 13 days later, he came back to himself and went to the Kiev principle railway shop as soon as he was dischared from hospital. He joined in the flight of arresting Father Basil and fixed the railway roads in a hard time, but he complished the tasks in advance every time. During the constructing work, he also insisted in working though he was in a bad healthy condition and sent back to home frequently. Because of long-time hard working, his health went seriously. He changed his work from time to time on account of his health. At last he did not avoid lying in bed, although he strangled for a long time. Later, he made up his mind to put vision and never use his leg. But he did not discourage, on the contrary, he succeed in creating the novel Born of the Storm, and soon it was published. He came back to his party again and worked for the Communism until he die. During his lifetime, he fall in love with three girls, Tonia, Rita and Tanya, and finally he married to Tanya.Thirdly, my limited and general opinions about this novel. The most important thing Ive learned from Paul is that life is precious and only once for everyone, so we should live our life significantly. He had confirmed his value of life by his own actions. Pual didnt lose his heart and still studied, worked very hard and even started literal creation after becoming disabled. But lifes torture didnt let him off easily while played another serious joke with him. Because of his long time study without any rest, he became a blind soon. However, he wasnt defeated by life but picked his pen again to continue writing without any hesitation. He needed to pay great efforts to write on the board with slots cut to keep his pencil on a straight course. Thanks to his hard-working, he finished his previous chapters of the book named Child of The Storm. eg: “Novel warmly approved will be immediately published congratulations on your triumph” and “His heart pounded. His innermost dream had achieved reality. The iron ring was broken, and once again, with a fresh weapon, he was in the active ranks and a living man”. While I read this novel, I cant help that tears was full of my eyes and it stirred up my feeling. I just wonder about the kind of power which encouraged him to have such a strong mind and passion to complete that work. When I finished reading, I understand that its just the greatest and the most brillant Republicanism calling him to creat miracles, also which is the power to encourage him to fight with his serious disease. As for commom people, though we cant carry on the rifle to guard our country and fight in the war with conflagration buring fire, but we can devote our knowledge and ourselves to the people, to our country and its construction. Also I believe that it is possible for anyone to make their dreams come true if they are as great and ambitious as Paul.Another point Id like to mention is that ones attitude determines ones achievement. Someone said that Paul was born of a hero, but I just thought that he was worth of being called a hero. Though he educated little in school and used to be looked down upon by others, he never complained and abominated about it. On the contary, he growing as a young person with high ideals, noble characters and tenacious style of Communist fighters. He said to himself: “Find out how to live even when life has become unbearable. Make yourself useful.” Thus we can say that what made him powerful and strong is not only the revolutionary spirit, but also his iron will. With the strong will and positive attitude, he fought against with the Whites, got apart from his family, badlly infected by typhoid and fever, but he became a successful Communist and made his dream come true finally. Personally speaking, I think the most important thing this novel meaned to deliver to us is not the miserable life and hardships once he suffered but his optimistic attitude towards life and his contribution to the liberation of people in Russia. As for common people, life isnt sailing smoothly all the time and difficulties are inevitable, which would make you frustrated, annoyed or impatient to some extent. The bset way to overcome it, at least it seems to me, is to calm yourself down firstly and then face it with a moderate attitude. If we can form a good hait of managing our life in this way, I m sure that you can improve yourself greatly. Therefore, however hard life is, meet it and live it, and dont shut it and call it hard names. Perhaps it is rather hard for us to be another Paul, but at least we should try our best to do it.The third point Ive learned is that people must have a clearly goal and specific schedule in life. Some people in modern society considered that it is impossible for people to live regularlly according to his plan every time, especially in todays changeable society. I partly agree with this view, but I dont think that people who without life target would live better than those who have a comprehensive schedule in life. Fot instance, Paul wasnt good at study and showed no interest in working at the factory, but he was greatly attracted by the October Revolution and willing to sacrifice all his passion to the Bolsheviks. eg:“So there are folk like that in this world. Otherwise a man couldnt stand it, but as soon as he had something stand for it happened like that.” From this, we can find that a clearly life goal is just like an instructor in your mind who leads you to go further; a beacon in your heart which guides you go out of darkness and daze; a certain kind of hope which motivates you to move ahead continuously and steadily. With a clear goal, one can transform the pressure into an endless motivation and make progress constantly. Additionally, a clearly goal is the prop to ones spirit, a key to the door of success, an invisible thrust to his progress. Hence each of us should take our own future into consideration if we desire for a better living condition, a higher life quality and a brighter prospects. The last but not least point displayed in this novel is that we should treasure our limited life, enjoy it and learn from it. As we all know that Paul demonstrated his life by his actions and also left a precious wealth for human being. Paul concluded his life in the following words:“The thing one prizes most is life. Life comes to us but once and it should be posible to live ones life in such a way that looking back one would feel no regret for years lived pointlessly, no shame for a petty worthless pastso that as one died one could say: All my life and all my strength has been given to the most beautiful thing in the worldthe struggle for the freedom of mankind”. Apparently, he enjoyed himself in the process of struggle and pleased with his experirnce. This reminds me of the ancient saying,“Life is a box of chocolate, you never know what its going to have in tomorrow”. eg:“Only now did Paul come to realis
