Mario and Connie are big soccer( football) fans. But when Mario came to the United States eight years ago, he didnt know that soccer was a popular sport here. The only American sports that he heard a lot about were basketball, baseball and football. He was amazed to learn that there were many soccer teams in the USA. One Sunday afternoon, he was taking a walk and discovered two teams playing soccer in a park. He watched the game. Both teams had excellent players, and the game was exciting. When it was over, he talked to some of the players. They were from Italy, Spain, and Latin America. One of the teams needed another player, and they asked Mario to join them. He was happy to do so. Seven years later hes still playing in the team, and hes one of their best players. His son Sal is also learning how to play soccer, and he goes to all of his dads games. Mario practises with him and shows him how to kick (踢) and pass the ball. Hes only six years old, but hes fast and can kick and pass well. His ability to play soccer is amazing(surprising). Like father, like son, their friends said. And Sal said, I cant wait until Im old enough to play in the team at my school. Last week Mario, Connie and their two kids drove all the way from Chicago to New Jersey to visit Connies cousins. She hadnt seen her cousins for five years, but the biggest reason for the trip was that her youngest cousin was getting married. She didnt want to miss the big wedding(婚礼) and the family reunion. Her cousins are also crazy about soccer. One night her cousin Lou was playing. It was the game of the season, and the whole family went to the game. Mario and Connie cheered when Lous team played well. The score was 2 to 2 at half time. It was exciting. No one scored in the third quarter, and then with only 60 seconds left, Lou scored, and his team won 3 to 2. After the game they went to have pizza and celebrate.51. Lous team did well in the game.CLearning experiences happen to us throughout our lives, and not too long ago, I had one that I would like to share. This story began with a sailing trip. Its a story of pizza (比萨), sailing and being afraid of buying ice-cream with a US $20 bill. I was going to Marblehead, Massachusetts, with my Optimist (a sailboat) racing team for the New England Optimist Championship. The team was racing down the highway at 85mph (miles per hour) when we all realized we were hungry. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I was very excited, because I had a new US $20 bill. I was so excited because I had never had that kind of money before. I had money I had saved, but spending it on food seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. Finally I got a cheese pizza and drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I realized I had not actually handed my moneyto the cashier(收银员). I had just walked out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible. My conscience(良知) opened its mouth and swallowed me. I couldnt get over it. I just couldnt go back to the cashier and pay for my stolen, half-eaten pizza. I would be more embarrassed than I ever had been. I was so sorry that I refused to give myself the pleasure of an ice-cream in fear that someone would say, Hey, Jeff, why dont you use the change from the pizza instead of that nice, new US $20 bill? I was not so proud of my money now. For the next two years, whenever I was reminded of (thought of) the Pizza incident, I closed my eyes and said to myself, “Dont think about it. Dont think about it.” I have learned two things from this experience. Maybe I was an unwise person for giving in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a free pizza. But I think the real lesson is that if you let being embarrassed get in the way of doing the right thing, then your conscience will catch up with you. I think this reflects the saying, A coward (懦夫) dies a thousand deaths, a herodies one. I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a hero and gone back up to pay for the pizza, then I would have felt a little embarrassed about it only once, or maybe twice.54. Why didnt the boy buy ice-cream? A. He wanted to save the money. B. He didnt want to eat ice-cream then. C. He didnt have enough money for it. D. He was afraid that someone would find out the fact.55. pay for the pizza with his money at first. A. In order to keep the bill, he didnt B. He completely forgot to C. His teammates told him not to D. The cashier didnt ask him to56. The underlined word “embarrassed” in the passage means . A. happy and comfortable B. disturbed and silly C. uneasy and uncomfortable D. sad and angry57. Why did the writer think of the saying “A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one”? A. He used to be a coward then but is not now.B. He had a long terrible time for his stolen pizza.C. He would have been a hero if he had paid for the pizza.D. He wanted to die once like a hero.DSorry to say, our brains naturally start slowing down at the young age of 30. It used to be thought that this couldnt be helped, but new studies show that people of any age can train their brains to work faster. Your brain is a learning machine, says University of California scientist Dr. Michael Merzenich. Given the right tools, we can train our brains to act like they did when we were younger. All thats required is the practice designed just for the purpose: a few exercises for the mind. Merzenich has developed a computer-based training method to speed up the process(过程) in which the brain deals with information (). Since much of the data we receive comes through speech, the Brain Fitness Program works with language and hearing to better speed and accuracy (准确性).Over the course of training, the program starts asking you to distinguish (tell) sounds (between dog and bog, for example) at an increasingly faster speed. Its a bit like tennis instructor, says Merzenich, hitting balls at you faster and faster to keep you challenged. You may start out slow, but before long youre pretty quick. The biggest finding in brain research in the last ten years is that the brain at any age is highly plastic. If you ask your brain to learn, it will learn. And it may even speed up while in the process. To keep your brain young and plastic you can do one of a million new activities that challenge and excite you:playing table tennis or bridge, doing crossword puzzles, learning a language. When it comes to preventing ageing, you really do use it or lose it, says Barbara Sahakian, professor at Cambridge University. 58. Peoples brains according to the new studies. A. will not start slowing down until the age of 30 B. will start working slowly after the age of 30 C. can work as well as at a young age through certain exercises D. can not be improved once they start to slow down 59. What can we learn from the text? A. Using right tools is important for brains work. B. Brain research deals with information from the Internet C. Dr. Merzenich is a scientist in computer,D. Many activities can keep our brains young. 60. Which of the following agrees with the writers idea? A. The train methods work better for the old. B. People should use the brain to stop it from ageing. C. The training of the brain should start at an early age. D. It is necessary to take part in as many activities as possible.七、阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的五个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。(共8分,每小题2分)Do you know about New York? 61 .It has many other names, like the Big Apple and the Capital of the World. Many people want to visit this city. 62 .Fifth Avenue is a very popular shopping street.
