The main task (Outcome)The students will be able to understand the importance of protecting the environment through sharing some examples of rethinking, reusing and recycling.(Note:The main purpose of this period is to help students realize the importance of reusing and recycling with creative minds to help save the earth.)2. Language focusThe students will be able to know the meanings of the following words and phrases and try to use them inproper situations:throw away, put sth. to good use, inspiration, iron, creativity, recycle, make/build . out of(Note: This passage is mainly about some inspiring examples of making useful things out of the old things or the waste. The teacher will guide students to get the meanings of the words within the context while reading.)3. Language skills and goals(1) The students will be able to practice the common skills of predicting, skimming and scanning;(2) The students will be able to better understand the passage through creative thinking;(3) The students will be able to design something useful out of the waste with creative minds and share with others.(Note: Except the common reading skills such as predicting, skimming and scanning, this period also intends to develop students creative thinking by think-pair-share and talent show to understand the ideas behind it more deeply.)4. Learning strategies(1) The students will be able to read carefully for the names, the material and the works in the passage;(2) The students will be able to cultivate their ability of individual learning and cooperative learning by doing some activities independently and some in groups.(Note: This passage includes some examples of rethinking, reusing and recycling, so the teacher should pay more attention to guiding students to learn how to fully understand it by classifying. Activities need to be carried out individually and in groups.)5. Affection(1) The students will be able to feel the importance of environmental protection ;(2)The students will be able to be inspired to think creatively in daily life.(Note: As for the affection goals, besides the realization of the importance of environmental protection, the ability and spirit of creativity seems more important.)学情分析A basic analysis of learning condition:The students from Class 9 &10, Grade 9 have already gotten certain reading ability and speaking skills after years English learning. Besides, they have formed some good learning habits, such as thinking actively in class, finding the supporting details while reading, sharing ideas with classmates and so on. All these make it possible for the teacher to guide the students to do a variety of activities.教学重点难点1. Reading focus(1)Studentswill improve their reading ability by training some of the reading skills, such as predicting, skimming, and scanning;(2)Studentscan grasp some useful words and expressions in this passage, such as throw away, put sth. to good use, inspiration, iron, creativity, recycle, make/build . out of;(3)Studentswill be able to fully understand the passage through creative thinking and get the main idea behind the passage by thinking, discussing and sharing.2. Anticipated difficulties(1) The fact that the students arent good at thinking creatively and observing in daily life may make it difficult for the students to give the examples of rethinking, reusing and recycling.(2) Solutions: the teacher should use the “scaffolding method of teaching” and guide students to finish tasks from easy ones to difficult ones.教学方法与教具Teaching methodThree-stage model: Based on the understanding of reading as an interactive process which involves not only the text but also the readers knowledge of the language in general and of the text types, teaching reading in the classroom divides the teaching procedures into basically three stages. Why?(3) Why does the writer choose Wang Tao as another example?AimsDuring careful reading, the teacher should gradually guide students read the details about the examples of rethinking, reusing and recycling. Comprehending their ways and their ideas is, to a certain extent, understanding the passage.NotesThis is the main part of passage reading. The teacher should guide students to think while reading and to understand after reading by asking questions in a row at a right time. During the process, the teacher can properly help students deal with some new words and phrases like “turn upside down” and “inspiration”. At the same time, the teacher should use the blackboard as a useful aid to help students grasp the main outline of the passage.Step 3 Post-reading活动6. Fillinthesummary1. To ask students to find out the topic sentence of the passage. AimsIt helps students understand the structure of the passage better.2. To ask students to complete the summary with the words from the text.Nothing is a waste if you have a creative mind. There are three creative people who inspire us all. Amy Hayes is a most _ woman. This step helps students recognize how prefixes and suffixes may change change the meanings of words and how they are used.活动8. Think creativelyTo ask students broaden their minds to think what can be reused and what can be made out of them. Theycanbegivensometimetothinkcriticallyontheirownatfirsttoformahabitofindependentthinking.Ofcoursediscussingandsharingshouldbefollowednext.Aims It helps brainstorm rethinking, reusing and recycling in our daily lives and encourage students to observe the beauty in our lives. Also, it paves the way for talent show.Notes“Think-pair-share” is an effective way to deal with a complex topic and enhance the understanding through discussion. First, ask students to think about the topic individually and write down some key words if necessary Then, pair up, exchange your responses with your partner and get different perspectives.
