本科课程论文学 院:外 国 语 学 院专 业:学 号:学生姓名:课程名称:高级英语视听说课程成绩:日 期:2011年12月3日武汉科技大学本科课程论文On the relationship between roles in the film The GraduateI. Introduction of the film Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman), distance runner and top student, has just gotten out of college and doesnt know what to do with himself. His wealthy California suburban parents are puzzled that hes at such loose ends, and they buy him more toys. While hes waiting for something to happen, Mrs. Robinson (Bancroft), the wife of his fathers business partner, welcomes him into her bed. Then her daughter Elaine (Ross) briefly comes home from college and Ben is quite taken with her, so he finds himself in a real mess. The Graduate (1967) is one of the key, ground-breaking films of the late 1960s, and helped to set in motion a new era of film-making. The influential film is a biting satire/comedy about a recent nebbish, East Coast college graduate who finds himself alienated and adrift in the shifting, social and sexual mores of the 1960s, and questioning the values of society (with its keyword plastics). The themes of the film also mirrored the changes occurring in Hollywood, as a new vanguard of younger directors were coming to the forefront. Avant-garde director Mike Nichols, following his debut success of Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) with this second film, instantly became a major new talent in American film after winning an Academy Award for his directorship. It reflects the growth and resisting to adults society of young people. The film seems to have become the Representative of films in late 1960s. Even Today, the subject is still quite spicy and fun! The film was nominated for a total of seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Dustin Hoffman), Best Actress (Anne Bancroft), Best Supporting Actress (Katharine Ross), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. The film won only one award - Best Director. The Oscar-nominated screen adaptation by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry (who appears as the hotels desk clerk) was based on the novel of the same name by Charles Webb (a recent graduate of the East Coasts Williams College when he wrote his first novel). As the three important Protagonists in the film,Benjamin Braddock(Dustin Hoffman acted), Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft acted), Elaine Robinson(Katharine Ross acted) are living in a very complex and entangled relationship, which really attracts viewers. So Id like to share my opinion about the relationship between the roles.II. Analysis of the filmI) Benjamin Braddock vs. Mrs. RobinsonMrs. Robinson: Dont be nervous.Ben: Get away from that door.Mrs. Robinson: I want to say something first.Ben: Dear God.Mrs. Robinson: Benjamin. I want you to know that Im available to you, and if you wont sleep with me this time.Ben: Oh, my God.Mrs. Robinson: .if you wont sleep with me this time I want you to know that you can call me up anytime you want and well make some kind of an arrangement. Do you understand what I.?Ben: Let me out.Mrs. Robinson: Benjamin. Did you understand what I said? (Screeching car tires are heard outside in the driveway.)Ben: Yes, yes, let me out.Mrs. Robinson: Because I find you very attractive. Now, anytime you want, you just.Ben: Oh Jesus, thats him.At the beginning of their story, Mrs. Robinson seduced Benjamin. But Ben knew he could not accept the temptation because he wanted to be Rational. And then time goes on he finds himself is in an Abyss of pain which has been produced by Uncertainty about the future. He feels alone. He need someone to talk, and at that moment he thought of Robinson. Then they went to bed.Mrs. Robinson is not interested in a real relationship, just wants sex with a young man (perhaps several young men) to help combat her feelings of loneliness and unattractiveness. Her husband was her teacher when she was in her college. There is no love between them, and they got married because she was pregnant. So you can imagine that what a great tragedy to a young girl. And now,her husband is too old to satisifiy her,so,she need fresh man to fill her vacancy of body desires. And in my opinion, another reason of why she need Ben is she has confidence that she is still beautiful enough. She thinks that she has wasted her youth on a man who is much older than her. To Mrs. Robinson the flings with Benjamin are a source of rejuvanation, since she is unhappy with her life, and her husband, so Bejamin provides her only escape.“Mrs. Robinson, this is the sickest, most perverted thing that ever happened to me.” Look, I like you. I wouldnt keep coming here if I didnt like you.I enjoy it. I look forward to it. Its the one thing I have to look forward to._ Ben said to Mrs. RobinsonGeneral speaking, Mrs.Robinson successfully seduced Benjamin. In their relationship,Benjamin did not enjoy it.He still feels alone. But in order to igoring the pressure from his parents and Avoiding facing his future,he still continued sinking in the Immoral relationship.II) Benjamin Braddock vs. Elaine RobinsonBenjamin had promised Mrs. Robinson that he would not have a date with Elaine, but he broke it.Because his parents want him to. This time he met Elaine.“Elaine, I like you. I like you so much. Do you believe that? (She nods silently) Do you?” _Ben said to ElaineThe romance between Ben and Elaine is somewhat rushed because one second they are in a adult club where Elaine feels insulted and wants nothing to do with Ben, and then the next thing we know they are laughing and getting along and going on another date. Hoffmans Benjamin is the wrong kind of Romantic hero - an unemployed, bored rich kid with only vague life plansElaine is pure, young and beautiful. She is just a college a student. She does not have the desire and constraints from the adults world. And she is the only person who is willing to listening to him.Of course, at the same time,Ben is confused, young and handsome. He just graduated from college school. Every day hes feeling depressed from adults world. He need someone to talk.So If we can ignore the relationship of Ben and her mother, They are matched.Mrs. Robinson slaps Elaine twice across the face to bring her back to reality, but it doesnt work. Elaine and Benjamin run out of the church together, using a large golden church cross he pulls down from the wall, first as a weapon to clear a path and then as a barrier for the large glass doors to prevent everyone from following into their world. With the glass door securely locked, they symbolically and literally hold back the forces of resistance by their act of rebellion. Then, Elaine, still in her bridal gown, and Benjamin, grubby and unshaven, run to flag down and board a passing yellow municipal bus while giggling and laughing at their triumphant (but ultimately pointless) victory. They rush to the rear seat of the city bus and look out the rear glass window, amidst puzzling, stern and cold looks from the other elderly passengers of another generation. Oblivious to the other passengers in front of them, the two of them face each other and grin, but their victorious, self-satisfied moods begin to fade and disappear. Appropriately, The Sounds of Silence is reprised on the soundtrack. They ride in the final image staring silently ahead, uncharacteristically silent toward each other and not even looking at each other. Do they actually love or really care for each other? - probably not. Their relationship is maybe not much different from the one Benjamin experienced with Elaines mother in bed, and shortly, they both may fall back into the same world of their parents. But finally unexpectedly, they get together. They escape from the wedding and the end scene I found leaving me hanging. I would have expected that they would have kissed and lived happily ever after but instead their smiles fade away as they realize they have no idea what will happen next and they are back to the beginning again. The film leaves you wondering what will happen? Will the characters end up happy together? Or are they looking to each other as an escape from the domination of their parents? Will they be happy?I hope so.III) Elaine Robinson vs. Mrs. RobinsonMrs. Robinson: Its too late.Elaine: Not for me.Elaine is Mrs. Robinsons daughter. She is the starting point of her parents failed marriage. Mrs. Robinson had to marry Mr. Robinson at Elaines age.So more or less, she has a little envy to her dauter. This is a movie with many layers. Mrs Robinson is on a quest for her lost youth. She is often in control of everything around her but she loses it when she discovers that Benjamin will go on a date with Elaine. So when Mrs. Robinson knew Ben would have a date with Elaine, she became very angry, especially when she knew they were more closer. So she would rather than give up Ben and she lied to Elaine that Ben raped her .Elaine is pure but Mrs. Robinson is materialistic, they are very different but they are mother and daught. This is the contradiction of the story. Finally, Excellent Ben choosed Elaine, and stopped the depravation relationship with Mrs. Robinson. Elaine is just like the sunshine to him.The two different generations are also reflected in other dualities: the two rival women (young innocent doe-eyed daughter Elaine and the older seductress Mrs. Robinson), the two California settings (Los Angeles and Berkeley) and S. and N. California cultures (materialistic vs. intellectual), and the division in Benjamins character (morally drifting and indecisive vs. committed).IV) Mrs. Robinson vs Mr RobinsonMr. Robinson: Whos that guy? Whats he doing? Ill take care of him.Mrs. Robinson: Hes too late.Mr Robinsons number of appearances is not too many. After he knew the relationship between Ben and Mrs. Robinson,he became fury.In fact ,he is angry of their unrespecting. There is no love between he and his wife.He always came home late. Even he did not know his wife hang out every night. Mrs. Robinson was his student at college. So from this we can see that Mr Robinson is also not a pure person. So finally, they devorced.V) Ben and his parentsBen: Im just.Mr. Braddock: .worried?Ben: Well.Mr. Braddock: About what?Ben: I guess about my future.Mr. Braddock: What about it?Ben: I dont know. I want it to be.Mr. Braddock: .to be what?Ben: .Different.Bens family is rich enough. And his father hope he continue to be Graduate, but Ben is confused of his future. I dont want to pry into your affairs, but I would rather you didnt say anything at all and be dishonest. Good night. His mother said to him.In fact, all along, I think he does not want to let his parents down although there is no good communication between them. But He is either unable to communicate with his parents about his problems, or he is dishonest. And sometimes Bens father did not want to care what his song was thinking of.He just want to stuff his thought into Bens mind.(We can see it from Diving event.) III. ConclusionAll of my analysis to the relationship between the roles proved the theme of the movie. The theme of an innocent and confused youth who is exploited, mis-directed, seduced (
