The report of the 17th National Congress of the CPC, requires that every family and citizen be engaged in the development of a resource-saving society. At the same time, rational consumption behavior is fundamental for such development. Therefore, college students should practice rational consumption. However, the young age and the characteristics inhibit the development of such a concept. College students are still troubled by the problems brought by the consumption in everyday life. Thus, it is worthwhile to make deep analysis into these problems and find out the respective solutions so as to help college students develop a rational consumption concept. This research investigates a lot about the consumption concept of students in the suburban independent college.1.1 Analysis into the consumption habits of college students The questionnaire applied in this research focuses on the sophomore in Jiangcheng College, China University of Geosciences. This research gives out 200 pieces of questionnaire, with 142 pieces of effective questionnaire and the rate of efficiency being 71%. Questions in it include basic information of the students, such as the gender, the amount of consumption and the consumption psychology. According to the questionnaire, the consumption habits of the students there have the following features:1.1.1 The limitation of sources of income According to the survey, the main sources of income are confined to three ways, namely, family allowances, loans and part-time jobs. Some 96.3% students get their living allowances from families, being 92% of the total expenditure. Meanwhile, about 48% students have the experience of doing part-time jobs for more income.1.1.2 The coexistence of rational and irrational consumption According to the survey, students first give consideration to prices, second to brands, last to quality. Also, different students have different levels of expenditure, 6.26% students spend less than RMB300 yuan, 2.42% students fluctuate from 300-500 yuan and from 500-800 yuan, being respectively 47.78% and 39.44% of all students. Therefore, students give priorities to necessities in their daily lives, because of the limited income. They are very cautious in expenditures, always going for goods of low prices and high quality. For goods particularly needed, most students are careful in purchasing. Boys particularly behave in this way. In the meantime, college students come to concern themselves about self-image and styles of commodities. However, due to a lack of the ability to manage money and to conduct financial transactions, some college students are random about shopping. Students get their information from the media. With the sea of the information, students learn about the trends and fashions and then go shopping. Most of the processes do not involve students themselves and therefore most consumption behavior is irrational. Most students consume for fashion and unrealistic comparing. According to the survey, boys go after famous sporting outfit, with girls after famous cosmetics. Meanwhile, being in a community easily leads to unrealistic comparing. It is easy for and typical of college students to buy funky electronics and top-grade commodities for vanity, from clothing to computers and mobiles. This is partly a matter of Brand Effect, partly a matter of idolatry. Often college students are irrational about consumption in a relationship. The amount of expenditure per month ranges from hundreds to thousands. This kind of consumption accounts for the main part of the total. Most college students admit the rationality of a certain amount of material input when in a relationship. Still, it is hard for them to live up to the principle of moderate consumption. A big part of the expense is to buy gifts on special days such as Valentines Day, Christmas Day, The New Year, Double Seventh Day and birthdays. In addition, communication cost is also a essential for keeping a relationship. Phones, text messages, and surfing are all needed, especially for lovers separated by a long distance. It is definitely a financial burden for college students from less well-off family to pay for hours of phone speech, hundreds of text messages, accommodation expense and so on.2 Analysis into the consumption psychology of college students 2.1 Analysis into the psychology of irrational consumption Irrational consumption can be caused by the pursuit for personality. On campus, with increasing self-awareness, college students are yearning for more control over their material and spiritual life. They begin to have the right to speech on family consumption; they tend to go for their own likes and dislikes; they are trying to exercise more control over what they wear, instead of obeying their parents, Meanwhile, college students spend more time on making friends. Their social network becomes closer and wider, social activities such as going out, holding parties and traveling being more and more. All these need a material support.2.2 Analysis into the influence of consumer groups 2.2.1 Consumer group Consumer group, being a special social group, has an impact over its group members. Consumer groups contribute to the varieties of the psychology and behavior of consumption. This is done by internal communication. The influence of a consumer-group can give rise to imitation.2.2.2 Features of consumer groupsA consumer group is characterized by its authority, legitimacy, force and return. Generally, the more authority, legitimacy, force and return of a consumer group, the stronger influence of it. Comparing to other consumer groups, college students tend especially to venture and explore. They can keep a strong interest for specific commodities and can have a keen interest in shopping. Curiosity drives them to buy new products and the recognition of the first few group members soon arouse the interest of the rest of the group. In the same way, when some products first being boycotted by a few group members, they can be later rejected by the others in the group.3 Analysis into vanity and unrealistic comparing in shopping3.1 Unrealistic comparing caused by the pursuit for fashions The consumption behavior of college students is not only affected by consumer groups, but by vanity and unrealistic comparing.According to Mas lows Demand Theory, people want more respect after meeting the needs of security, friendship and physiology. On campus, college students have a strong desire for respect. Most of their effort originates from the pursuit for respect. Being respected is essential in realizing their values. Vanity is also virtual in actuality. It goes beyond ones objective self-assessment. Reflected in consumption, it is featured by the desire for luxurious material life-going for fashion and famous brands. Many college students equate the ownership of commodities of famous brands with the source of pride. They hope to become the center of gravity by that. They attempt to improve their profile and gain more visibility by their luxury. This attempt to demonstrate social values also exerts negative influence on the surroundings. Students, rich or poor, under such influence and strain, try hard to reinvent their image in order to gain more self-esteem. In this way, vanity spreads and unrealistic comparing in consumption becomes popular and commonplace.3.2 Unrealistic comparing caused by vanity Reflected in consumption, vanity leads college students to go for fashions, to unrealistically compare with each other(Huangsheng, 2006). Therefore, college students imitate the styles and fashions of each other and long for weird things. Generally speaking, the attention of most students is drawn by the fashions and trends in the society, with the exception of only a small number of students. College students, repellent and dynamic, are eager for fashions and trends. This process makes them content. On the one hand, vanity, after satisfying college students to some degree, can give new fashions and trends, thus promoting the development of consumption on campus. College students base their consumption on self and vanity. They are chasing for rarities, so as to be contented.4 Analysis into consumption psychology in a relationship To the question Are you in love? and How much do you spend for a relationship, 77% students admit the experiences of being in a relationship and they spend 200 to 700 yuan on that per year. According to the survey, the major expenditure of college students concentrate on dining, snacks, shopping and entertainment in the bar. A large amount of consumption is to buy gifts for lovers. On special days, such as Valentines Day, Christmas Day, birthdays, or anniversaries, lovers give each other gifts. The cost of these gifts ranges from hundreds to thousands. The costs of out-campus accommodation, is also massive, ranging from 200 to 400 yuan per month. The desire for show-off in a relationship competes with vanity and unrealistic comparing when shopping .Love on campus, though romantic, needs a material foundation. For college students with no source of income, luxurious consumption in a relationship is dangerous. Conclusion From the contents of the survey above,we can see the majority of college students consumption concept is healthy, not having many too bad consumers.Except that a certain number of students lack ration and that they dont have a specific judgment for the value of a commodity. The main features are as follows:1 a lack of awareness of saving,so FQ(financial quotient) need to be developed and reinforced.2 the unbalance of consumption structure;3 too much attention has been paid to fashion and famous brand,as a result, unrealistic comparing is happened in order to meet their vanity;4 too much money is spent in social relationship, especially for those who fall in love. Confined to the limitation of our group numbers and capacity, there is deficiency in range and depth of the research.Considering the possible unfitness may exist in this paper, the logical-oriented findings and instructions may only appliable to limited districts. The questions weve searched may be inaccurate, and we welcome aces help in order to make progress together. In addition, due to the limitation of dates range, you are welcomed to send us you
