While every parent wants to provide the best education for their children, not every parent has access to a quality school. In a perfect world every family would live in a neighborhood with an excellent public school or be able to afford to send their children to the private schoolthey choose that meets their needs. Unfortunately, we dont live in a perfect world and many parents, based on their zip code alone, must send their children to failing and underperforming schools. In 2004,while serving as a member of the Louisiana State Senate in New Orleans, myconstituentscalled begging me to do something to help their children. Many of the schools were failing academically and parents considered them unsafe. As a community, its critical we admit that not every school can meet the needs of each and every student. A school that is a perfect fit for one student could be a very poor match for another. Each student learns differently, has different needs, and each family has different values for their childrens education. In our communities we have many excellent schools of all types. We also have many programs and options in place that parents of all backgrounds can access. I am proud to have supported schoolchoice law, including the Student Scholarships for Educational Excellence Program in New Orleans in 2008, theprecursorof the Louisiana Scholarship Program. While charter schools and traditional directrun schools are the ones most often discussed, the Louisiana Scholarship Program provides parents an even greater option. Such a program provides an educational choice for parents they might not otherwise be able to make, providing the opportunity for a brighter future for their children. While there are many reasons and factors that go into a parents educational decision, the important thing is that parents are not limited to the choices which they are able to make so as not to limit the level of success their children can meet.1. Many of the schools were failing academically and parents considered them unsafe. 故选A项。3. A school that is a perfect fit for one student could be a very poor match for another. 依据文章倒数第二段的the Louisiana Scholarship Program provides parents an even greater option可知,路易斯安那州奖学金计划能帮助家长做出更好的选择。 Such a program provides an educational choice for parents they might not otherwise be able to make, providing the opportunity for a brighter future for their children. 分析这是一个复合句,they might not otherwise be able to make是省略了关系代词的定语从句,先行词为an educational choice;现在分词短语providing在句中作状语。 Supportive text messages can double the chance of someone successfully quitting smoking, according to UK researchers. The study, published in The Lancet, called for texts to be included in services to help people kick the habit.Other scientists said a text service could be offered globally.According to government statistics two-thirds of UK smokers say they want to stop. This study looked at 5,800 of them. Supportive texts were sent to 2,915 of the smokers for six months. The rest received only messages thanking them for taking part. They were sent five texts a day for the first five weeks and then three a week for the next 26 weeks.Participants could also text back for specific advice when they had strong desire or had begun to smoke again.Saliva tests for cotinine, which is made when nicotine is broken down by the body, were taken to determine if people had really given up.After six months, 10.7% of those receiving texts had quitdouble theproportionamong those doing it on their own.Dr Caroline Free, who led the txt2stop trial at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “Text messages are a very convenient way for smokers to receive support to quit.”“People described txt2stop as being like having a friend encouraging them or an angel on their shoulder.”“Ithelped people resist the temptation to smoke.”The World Health Organization says nearly six million die each year because of smoking, mostly in low-and middle-income countries.“The lessons learned from the txt2stop trial could. not only provide a new approach to stop in high-income and middle-income countries, but could also provide a useful starting point for implementingbehaviouralchange in resource-poor settings.”It has also been suggested similar text messages could be used to help people modify other behaviour.1. What can be the best title of the passage?A. Text Messages Help Smokers QuitB. How to Quit Smoking EffectivelyC. Smoking Is Very Harmful to HealthD. The Function of Text Messages2. 根据第八段“Saliva tests for cotinine,.” 根据上文的“People described txt2stop as being like.” As we all know, good habits can make you a happier person. But it was an emergency. 故选A。2. take on呈现;雇用;hunt for寻找;meet with会晤。故选C。3. 4. D根据“But it was an emergency.” 故选A。6. A根据第三段slept most of the class可知,James在姐姐怀抱里睡着了。故选A。7. 12. Dattend a school上学。故选D。13. 故选A。14. B。15. Dput to rest any worries放下包袱。故选D。16. 故选A。20. As an older sister, 17-year-old high school student, Parish is used to helping out.A family1 emergencyprevented both Mom Curry and her husband from being able to2 pick upher 3-year-old son, James.
