Gates recommended four books in 2018though some were published earlier.Leonardo da Vinci, by Walter Isaacson (2017)The bestselling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein researched deeply into da Vincis contributions beyond art, highlighting the breadth of his scientific, technological, and creative output. “Leonardo nearly understood almost all of what was known on the planet at the time. Thats mostly because of his curiosity about every area of natural science and the human experience,” said Gates. The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, by Thi Bui (2017)Gates calls this graphic novel “really impressive”. Bui is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the fall of Saigon, and becoming a parent inspired her to look into her own parents miserable history. “I was struck by how the experiences Bui illustrates manage to be both universal and specific to their circumstances,” said Gates.Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders (2018)Saunders, a long-time short story writer, won high praise for this novel. The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (萦绕) the basement of Willie Lincoln, Abraham Lincolns son, who died at 11 in real life. “Willies death after the Civil War made the president have a new understanding of the grief hes creating in other families by sending their sons off to die in battle,” said Gates.Origin Story: A Big History of Everything, by David Christian (2018)This new book is by the creator of Big History, a free, online social studies course. It traces history in wide, sweeping movements, starting with the Big Bang, and it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science. This is a brief history of the universe. “David gets a little stuck on the current economic and political problems in the West, and I wish he talked more about the role innovation will play in preventing the worst effects of climate change,” said Gates.1. Which books refer to the field of science?A. Origin Story and Leonardo da Vinci.B. Lincoln in the Bardo and Origin Story.C. Leonardo da Vinci and The Best We Could Do.D. The Best We Could Do and Lincoln in the Bardo.2. If you are interested in thrillers, whose book will you most probably choose?A. Walter Isaacson.B. Thi Bui.C. George Saunders.D. David Christian.3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The Best We Could Do is an autobiography.B. Lincoln in the Bardo has been warmly received.C. David Christian talks much about the part that innovation will play.D. Readers can only read about Leonardo da Vincis contributions towards art.【答案】1. A 2. C 3. Leonardo da Vinci, The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, Lincoln in the Bardo,以及Origin Story: A Big History of Everything。 最后一段第二句“it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science.” 倒数第二段的第二句“The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (萦绕) the basement of Willie Lincoln”可知Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders这本书是属于惊悚题材的,故对惊悚小说感兴趣可以读本书,可以去阅读George Saunders的书,故选C。 根据倒数第二段第一句“Saunders, a long-time short story writer, won high praise for this novel.”可知Saunders凭借 Lincoln in the Bardo赢得了高度赞扬,可推理Lincoln in the Bardo这本书很受欢迎。故选B。BA T-shirt that constantly monitors the hearts activity and detects abnormalities could help protect people against stroke. The T-shirt, which can be washed up to 35 times before it needs replacing, has been developed to improve the detection of dangerous heart conditions like atrial fibrillation( 心房颤动), which causes an irregular heart rhythm and raises the risk of stroke. At least one million people in Britain are known to have this condition; however, its estimated that at least another 500,000 have it but havent yet been diagnosed because they have no obvious symptoms. Some will have symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness and fatigue; but a large number of people have no idea theyre ill until they suffer a stroke.Detecting atrial fibrillation involves carrying out an ECG( 心 电 图 ). Conventional ECGs are done in a hospital and involve highly trained teams of staff attaching up to 24 separate electrodes(电极) to different parts of the body to measure electrical signals. But most patients experience abnormal rhythms only intermittently(间歇地). This means the chance of picking them up during a short hospital check is slim.Doctors sometimes issue patients with a device called a Holter monitor to wear under their clothes to try to pick up cardiac( 心脏的) problems. This is an electronic box which clips onto your waistband and is connected to a series of electrodes worn on the upper part of your body. But the box itself is quite bulky, hard to hide beneath clothing and involves a dozen or more wires being attached to the patients chest. The Cardioskin T-shirt, which is made from cotton, could be a much more convenient alternative and can be worn 24 hours a day meaning it is more likely to pick up any abnormal rhythms in the patients heart. It has 15 tiny electrodes woven into the material which are strategically placed around the chest area to track the electrical signals from the heart as they travel across the main part of your body. The electrodes are powered by a battery which can be removed easily when you need to wash the T- shirt and feed results to a microchip which then sends them out wirelessly to an app. This converts( 转换) the data into an easy-to-read chart showing if the heart rate is abnormal. The results are shared with the patients doctor so they can check the patients heart without having to call them into the hospital.Martin Cowie, a professor of cardiology at Imperial College London, said, “Cardioskin could be an important development for cardiologists.”4. How many British people are having dangerous heart conditions according to the text?A. Less than 0.5 million.B. Less than 1 million.C. At least 1.5 million.D. At least 2 million.5. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?A. The difficulty in detecting atrial fibrillation.B. The benefit of detecting atrial fibrillation.C. The process of detecting atrial fibrillation.D. The future of detecting atrial fibrillation.6. Why did the author mention a Holter monitor in the text?A. To show how convenient the Cardioskin T-shirt is.B. To introduce a way to check the patients heart.C. To encourage people to care about their health.D. To explain why doctors like using the device.7. What can we learn about the Cardioskin T-shirt?A. It has a battery that can be charged easily and quickly.B. It can be worn a month without being washed.C. It has electrodes placed all over the T-shirt.D. It can speed up the process of diagnosis.【答案】4. C 5. A 6. A 7. 由第二段“At least one million people in Britain are known to have this condition; however, its estimated that at least another 500,000 have it but havent yet been diagnosed because they have no obvious symptoms.” 由第三段“But most patients experience abnormal rhythms only intermittently(间歇地). This means the chance of picking them up during a short hospital check is slim.” 由第四段“But the box itself is quite bulky, hard to hide beneath clothing and involves a dozen or more wires being attached to the patients chest.”。以及第五段“The Cardioskin T-shirt, which is made from cotton, could be a much more convenient alternative and can be worn 24 hours a day ”可知,但是这个盒子本身体积很大,很难藏在衣服下面,并且有十几根或更多的电线连接到病人的胸部。 由倒数第二段“The electrodes are powered by a battery which can be removed easily when you need to wash the T- shirt and feed results to a microchip which then sends them out wirelessly to an app. This converts the data into an easy-to-read chart showing if the heart rate is abnormal. The results are shared with the patients doctor so they can check the patients heart without having to call them into the hospital.” 第四段“But the box itself is quite bulky, hard to hide beneath clothing and involves a dozen or more wires being attached to the patients chest.”。以及第五段“The Cardioskin T-shirt, which is made from cotton, could be a much more convenient alternative and can be worn 24 hours a day ”可知,但是这个盒子本身体积很大,很难藏在衣服下面,并且有十几根或更多的电线连接到病人的胸部。 A。CInternet time tied to teen depression(抑郁) symptomsSpending time online is normal behaviour for teenagers. But too much Internet use by teens or too little, for that matter might be related to depression, a new study finds. The findings, reported in the journal of Pediatrics, do not mean that the Internet is to blame. For one, teens in the study who spent no time online were also at increased risk of depression symptoms. Instead, the researchers say that both heavy Internet use, and non-use, could serve as signals that a teenager is having a hard time. For the study, Dr Pierre-Andre Michaud and his colleagues at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, surveyed 7,200 individuals aged 16 to 20 about their Internet use. Those who were online more than two hours per day were considered “heavy” Internet users, while those online anywhere from several times per week to two hours per day were considered “regular” users. The teenagers also answered a number of health-related questions, including some standard questions about depressive tendencies” that gauge(判定) how often a person feels sad or hopeless. Compared with regular Internet users, the study found, kids who were heavy users or non-users were more likely to be depressed or very depressed.Among male teens, heavy users and non-users were both around one-third more likely to have a high depression score, compared to “regular” users. Among girls, heavy Internet users had an 86 percent greater chance of depression, while non-users had a 46 percent greater likelihood compared to regular users. That was with factors like family income and any chronic health problems taken into account.Since teenagers typically go online to contact with friends, the researchers speculate(推测) that those who are never online may be more socially isolated.8. How long are those who are online per day considered “heavy” Internet users?A. More than two hours.B. More than eight hours.C. More than twelve hours.D. More than ten hours.9. Whats the purpose of Dr Michaud and his colleagues study?A. To know the actual number of teenagers online.B. To know the actual time of teenagers online.C. To know the influence of study online on teenagers.D. To know the relationship between the Internet use and depression.10. Whats the meaning of the underlined word “isolated” in the last paragraph?A. IndependentB. UnitedC. Separated.D. Capable.11. According to the accounts of the sixth paragraph, what can we conclude?A. Non-users of Internet arent likely to be depressed.B. Among girls, heavy Internet users are more likely to suffer depression than regular users.C. Heavy users will lead to death unless limited.D. Non-users have more possibility to be depressed than heavy users.【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第四段第一句“Those who were online more than two hours per day were considered heavy Internet users .” 故选A。 Since teenagers typically go online to contact with friends “青少年上网主要是为了与朋友们联系”可知,“那些从来不上网的青少年可能更孤立自闭”,故用 separated (分离的,单独的)最合适。 Among girls, heavy Internet users had an 86 percent greater chance of depression, while non-users had a 46 percent greater likelihood compared to regular users. Among girls, heavy Internet users had an 86 percent greater chance of depression, while non-users had a 46 percent greater likelihood compared to regular users. DHave you ever been in a situation where your name is spelled incorrectly on a Starbucks cup even after you spell out every single letter to the barista(咖啡师)? What would you feel when a room freezes into a sudden silence as soon as you start talking living with a foreign accent is difficult?Recently a gentleman in his 40s noticed my accent, and asked me where I was from. Then he inquired about what I majored in and how long Id been in the US to learn English. After a polite exchange, he said sympathetically that he couldnt imagine how hard it was for me to deal with reading long English texts. Furthermore, he seemed genuinely puzzled to the fact that I learned to speak English “so well” in an African country. Usually I would have shown my defensive self, pointing out his ignorance and telling him how sad I felt that his education had failed him. But I didnt.Sometimes these everyday experiences can drive me crazy. I even think of trying to actively “sound American” as a way to escape the stereotypes(模式化观念) that people have. But if I practiced an American accent enough, would people actually focus on what I say rather than how I say it?Actually, to speak in our accent itself is to tell a story of identity. My housemates and I come from seven different countries: Jamaica, USA, Gambia, Yemen, China, Ecuador and SA. None of us speak native-like English, but we understand each other perfectly and get along harmoniously. If we all sounded the same, I think that would be boring. Together, we make up a cocktail of beautifully crafted accents with seasoned experiences. None of us owes anyone an explanation about why we dont sound like how you expect us to.Accepting t
