If have no enough words ,you cant listen,speak,read and write well, and can not communicate in English effectively. Key wordsEnglish; vocabulary teaching; method.IntroductionEnglish vocabulary teaching always runs through the English teaching, it is also an important part of English teaching. The vocabulary teaching in primary school is less important than conversation,the four skills words are less too,but the words are also important in English teaching at primary school.How to teach the primary students learn words effectively and keep interests of the students is the teachers important topics.In English vocabulary teaching,we should be based on teaching materials and the students, organize teaching carefully,make the students learn words faster and remember firm . Teaching new vocabulary is one of an important section for an English teacher in her several kinds of teaching forms. Learning every new word is also important for students. In the existing primary school English teaching materials, the contents press close to life, involving colors, numbers, animals, fruit, food, body parts, family members, houseworks and so on.The four skills words appear in every grade,but it is difficult to the primary students.II. Problems existing in the course of English vocabulary teaching. In the English learning process, students will suffer the same problem, forget English words or difficult to remember. After a survey of students, I found the following problems when learning a word:2.1 The traditional procedure. Most of the English teachers still keep a traditional English vocabulary teaching procedure: a. present new words, b. correct the pronunciation, c. explain the meaning, d. making sentences with new words.Some teachers separate the vocabularies from the passages. In those teachers views vocabulary teaching is more than teaching the meanings of vocabularies. They think their roles are to help the students master the dictionary meaning. So a phenomenon arises that the students memorize the new words meaning but they do not know how to use them. Therefore, the students language skills are still not improved.2.2 The pattern of English vocabulary teaching is unitary. Some teachers only concentrate on imparting knowledge alone, simply explaining the meanings, the spellings and the usages. This pattern is contrary to the law of language study, separating the vocabulary from context. It makes students can only memorize English vocabulary in isolation and mechanically. We cannot understand the meaning of a sentence by pulsing the meaning of all words which make up this sentence. The exact meanings of a sentence should be understood by combining the situation in which it is uttered, the purpose for which the speakers utter it and even with the speakers intellectual level and social background. Almost each word has its own lexical meaning, contextual meaning, denotative meaning, connotative meaning and stylistic meaning. So students must understand a words meaning through a context. An unitary pattern would make students lose their interest in vocabulary learning.2.3 Some teachers neglect the close connection between language and culture. When we learn a new word we tend to look for its meaning in the word itself. Yet in addition to its dictionary meanings, the same word may stir up different associations in people. Take the word “dragon” for example. In western culture, dragon is considered as a monster while in China, dragon is seen as a symbol of luck. Therefore, the word “dragon” elicits a quite different meaning because of different culture experiences. This example indicates that language use is heavily tinted with its culture. So in the course of English vocabulary teaching teachers should permeate culture background knowledge.2.4 Some teachers vocabulary teaching has no important point. Some teachers explain every vocabulary in a text without any important point. Every vocabulary is required to be remembered. As a result, the burdon on students is becoming rather heavy. It can make students feel that the vocabularies required are so many, so complicated. Little by little, they will disgust vocabulary studying and abandon English learning. Teachers will also feel very tired of doing so. The two parts, teachers and students, havent both grasped the main contradiction. The effect of the teaching method is not so good. In fact, it is completely unnecessary that these teachers do it like that. Some vocabularies need to be recognized, some need to be used skillfully. For the latter, teachers should spend more time in teaching them. In vocabulary teaching, teaching should obey the rule of having a definite object in view.2.5 Some teachers never taught their students how to memorize vocabularies. On the one hand, and students must themselves take the initiative to review, consolidate learned words and phrases; the other hand, teachers have not done enough work to monitor the implementation of the memory of the students. Primary school students of English is not enough emphasis on the neglect of the English language learning time on the input.Its impossible to learn English well if you are not able to acquire a large of number of vocabularies. To memorize so many vocabularies you should acquire some techniques and method in English vocabulary memorizing in addition to hard-study and diligence. However, some teachers do not instruct the students to master some effective vocabulary memorizing skills. Therefore, students spend much time memorizing vocabularies but in vain. III.The following ways are better on teaching English words.3.1 Intuitive Approach Intuitive teaching mainly through physical, pictures, signal, movements, facial expression and so on,be able to improve the memory effect, this is also the most commonly teaching methods.It is used for physical education, such as watches, cups, apples, oranges, keys, and so on. All these things are everyday things that it is very easy to prepare , small size and easy to carry. For example, in Unit 1 of the first PEP Primary English Book,the words” book, ruler, pen, pencil, pencil-case, bag, crayon, sharpener and other school things”.The students are very easy to know the listening,speaking, reading and writing of the word objects 3.2 Games, Competition Law Game is a childrens nature.Students can learn words while they are playing games happily and relaxedly. In Junior English vocabulary teaching, we often play “Polly says”, “Touch and guess”, “Bingo”, “Guess from action”, card games etc.They can make our class active and arouse the students suspicions, attract the students to iv) Telling stories in class is a good way to make the students excited. One famous educator said “if a teacher dont make the students keep their emotion high, intelligence elevated by all means, just work without emotion work, he or she will bring tiredness.” Presenting with stories is on the basis of childrens curiosity about unknown things. It fulfills childrens psychology of exploration. Before presentation, we can use cards or photos, make gestures, facial expression etc. to tell the students main content or period to arouse students interest, pave the way for new words and expressions. For example, in Junior English Grade 9 “The lost nacklace”. We can begin the story with a picture . Then play the tape for the students to listen to. Let the students listen the story, especially what the parrot said, then have a stop, let the students guess what they heard. Encourage the students to guess and discuss. Then students listen to me to tell them the summary of the story. And in other situations, if possible, we can make a similar story or rewrite a story or even make up a needed situation just to present given vocabulary.The game teaching can strengthen the teaching. However, teachers should pay attention to reasonable control the time, to avoid the effect of teaching.3.3 Using compounding words to teach English words. In English, there are a lot of compounds. Compounding is the formation of new words by joining two or more roots.Words formed in this way are called compounds. So a compound is a lexical unit consisting of more than one root but functioning both grammatically and semantically as a single word. There are three major classes of compounds.(1)Noun compound:blackboard-blackboard, bedroom-bedroom classroom-classroom, newspaper-newspaper. (2) Adj compounds: man+make-man-made, blue+eye-blue-eyed, teachercentre-teacher-centred. (3) Verb compounds:overthow-overthrow,broadcast-broadcast, maybe-maybe.These compounds are made up of several words. If students know the meaning of the words, which constitute these compounds, they can easily guess the meanings of these compounds. For example, if students know the meanings of black and board, they will guess the meaning of blackboard naturally.3.4 By definition.To explain vocabulary in Chinese is convenient for English teachers. Students can easily understand it. Teachers should control the use of this way because some words, which have the absolutely same meaning, are very few in two languages. And using too much Chinese can easily make students form the habit of translation and is not helpful to think in English. In the circumstance that a word is difficult to be explained in English, but teachers may explain it in Chinese commonly. The way of explaining in Chinese contains two kinds: one is translation, and the other one is explaination. If there are some Chinese words, which have the same meaning of a learned English word, teachers may use the way of listing their corresponding Chinese words to explain. For example, war (战争),victory(胜利). However, after some English word is translated into Chinese, its Chinese meaning can still not reflect the English words original meaning. In this circumstance, after translating, teachers may make some suitable explanation. For example, uncle can be translated into the man of your fathers peers. According to specific situations, uncle may be explained as 伯父,叔父,姑父 and 舅父.3.5 Using conversion to teach new words. Conversion is the formation of new words by converting words of one class to another. This is a method of turning words from one part of speech to a different part. These words are new only in a grammatically sense. Since the words do not change in structure but in function, this process is also known as functional shift. Pay attention to the word round in the following sentences:(1) He was knocked out in the second round; (2) Round the number off to the nearest tenth;(3)The women gathered round our room;(4)The sun was bright and round; (5) People over there came from all the country round. In each sentence round is used as a different part of speech. As we all know word-formation plays an important role in the process of vocabulary teaching in modern English. If students can master the ways mentioned above, their vocabulary can be enlarged. Thus, when students read English books, they can reduce the times of using dictionary. English vocabulary review and testWhen study the word, the method is very important, but we should always learn new things, and review the old knowledge. 4.1.
