Go and fetch it for me , S1 . Do you think Im polite ?Ss : Not too polite .T : I want to say it in a polite way , so what should I say ?S2 : You can say : “ Could you please help me to fetch it , S1 ? ”T : Youre great ! It is more polite . So when we ask for help , we should be polite . Now lets watch two short plays .Introduce something about the plays , then have students watch and discuss .T : Mike is new in Xinhua Middle School . He wants to go to the library , but he doesnt know where it is . He is asking for the way .The first playMike : Hey ! Where is the library ?Man : ( no answer )The second playMike : Excuse me ! Could you tell me where the library is ?Woman : Sure . Its behind the office building .T : In the first play , is the man glad to help Mike ? Why not ?S1 : Because his request sounds impolite .T : In the second play , the woman lokks happy . Why ?S2 : Because he is polite .T : Yes . “ Excuse me ,could you tell me where the library is ? ” is a more polite request . There are other polite ways . We can say “ Excuse me , do you know where ” the library is ? ” or “ Excuse me , could you tell me how to get to the library ? ” .( Have students read together ) So what should we pay attention to when we ask others for information ?S3 : I think we should be very polite in using language .T : You are right . In this unit , we will learn some polite expressions in English used to ask for information . They will be very helpful for you , especially when you are in English-speaking countries .Step 2 Presentation Shoe the picture in 1a to the students and ask : When you walk along the street ,what can you see ?Have students say the places .Ask students to read the phrases in 1a . then show the picture of each place . Have them say what they can do in every place like this :Post office : We can buy some stamps or make a telephone call .Have students match each thing with a place in the pictuere of 1a on their own . Check the answres .Step 3 PracticeT : Suppose you are in a new place , and you want to do the following things , how should you ask for information politely ?Please look at the picture and read the example .For example : I need some money .A : Excuse me ,could you please tell me where I can get some money / do you know where I can get some money ?B : Sure , there is a bank on the main street .Remind students to pay attention to the usage of objective clause with wh-questions and the order of objective clause with wh-questions .Have students work in pairs accordind to the following situations and the picture .1 . I want to send a letter .2 . I want to get some information about the town .3 . Im hungry 4 . I want a new dictionary .Ask different pairs to read their conversations in class . Make sure they can use the sentences “ Excuse me ,could you please tell me where I can ” and “Excuse me , do you know where I can ” .Step 4 Listening practiceHave students read the sentences in the picture in 1a and say : You ll listen to two conversations . Now , listen and complete the conversations in the picture in 1a .Play the recording and ask students to listen to the tape carefully and complete the conversation . Check the answers in class .Have two pairs read the conversations again . then help them to sum up how to ask for information politely .Step 5 PairworkAsk two students to read the sample dialogue in 1c .Point out the list of things people need and the pictures of the places in activity 1a . Ask students to look at activity 1a and make a conversation with a partner .Ask some pairs to come to the front of the classroom and act out their conversations .Then have them make a new conversation with their partners to talk about their own town /city .Ask three pairs to act out their conversations .Step 6 SummaryGuide students to summarize the language points they learnt in this class .Ask students to sum up how to ask for information politely by using objective clauses with wh-questions and how to talk about getting around with the target language .Have students do some writing practice .Can you help him make a polite request ?1 .
