Avoiding zero vectors reduces the content of low-order current harmonics and, at the same time, reduces the common-mode voltage (CMV) by 40%. The method is first implemented using medium and large voltage space vectors, showing good performance in terms of current harmonic content. Then, the algorithm is applied to the case when four large vectors are used, further reducing the peak-to-peak CMV by 80% and still demonstrating a satisfactory performance. Both methods are experimentally compared to existing overmodulation algorithms obtaining better current quality and lower peak-to-peak CMV. The performance and feasibility of the method are evaluated through simulations and experiments. Furthermore, the experimental results are compared with those of other methods of overmodulation found in the literature, showing the superior performance of the proposed method in terms of the amplitude of the harmonic injection required to achieve maximum dc-link voltage utilization. For the high-saliency-ratio ac motor, the dynamic control of both d- and q-axes currents is required for fast torque control with optimal efficiency. However, in transient operation, the d-and g-axes current regulators are easily saturated even at low speed because the stator inductance is designed large enough to generate the desired reluctance torque. With the conventional overmodulation strategies, the current regulation performance degrades severely compared to a nonsalient motor. In this paper, the drawbacks of the conventional overmodulation strategies are investigated and a dynamic overmodulation strategy is proposed to improve the current response to fast transients. For the effective implementation of the strategy, a practical algorithm is also presented.
