A Study On Monster Huntings Greatest Contribution to Chinese VFX IndustryClass:Student: Time： Abstract This study is to analyze the factors of Monster Huntings success and the situa-tion of Chinese VFX industry,and figure out Monster Huntings biggest contribu-tion to Chinese VFX industry. Chinese VFX industry is in a terrible situation caused by various factors. But Monster Huntingsuccess in VFX production is remarkable. Although many researches have been done but few seize the essen-tial,the procedure of VFX production. I found that the biggest problem of Chinese VFX industry is lacking a developed and rigorous procedure. The procedure of VFX production the makers of Monster Hunting introduced and applied is Mon-ster Huntings greatest contribution to Chinese VFX industry. Introduction Since the reform of Chinese film marketization,it has been the first priority of the government departments and film practitioners to construct and develop Chinese film industry,and the development of Chinese Visual Effects(VFX) in-dustry has been the most important part in recent years(e.g.,Andrea DeCap-ua,2009;Katherine Kit Ling Chu,2007.)With the expansion of Chinese film market,Chinese VFX industry has been de-veloping at an unprecedented speed,but the quality of Chinese VFX films,making more money than other kinds of films, can not compare with American VFX films. However,it surprised us that Monster Hunting had a great success in the summer of 2015. The creators of Monster Hunting are mostly Chinese and some of them have worked or studied in America,which means they know about the procedure of VFX production in Hollyhood.More and more film investors and students are willing to devote their live to Chinese VFX industry. Unfortunately Chinese film makers have no meaning of developed VFX industry.(e.g., Fang Ding, 2014;Bo Zou,2005.)Although a lot of researches on this problem have been made,there is still no effective proce-dure of VFX industry being put forward.This study will focus on the recent situation of Chinese film VFX industry, and how the makers of Monster Hunting helped to put forward the procedure of Chinese VFX industry. 2. The situation and problems of Chinese VFX industryChinese VFX industry has been in a difficult situation,resulting from many problems.2.1 The situation of Chinese VFX industry Chinese VFX industry has been in a terrible situation for a long time.At the beginning of the 21st century, several inland films like Emergency Landing, The Polar Rescue had a large-scale use of VFX and synthetic lens, which couldnt compare with Hollywood but took the pace of exploration. Subsequently, Hero, The Promise, Builds up Number, The Tangshan Earthquake , The Painted,The Flowers Of War and other films also attempted to use many VFX. The Tangshan Earthquake even spent about half of the total cost in VFX production. Although these films are of a good standard in VFX production compared with other Chinese films,they are still in a rather low level compared with some foreign films,especially that of American. VFX production relies on computer technology,which is developing very slowly in China. As a result of that,VFX company and artist are very scarce in China,particularly veteran company and artist. Whats more,Chinese film directors,producers and artists are good at traditional special-effects production,but in terms of VFX,they poorly understand. Whats worse,few businessmen are willing to invest a VFX company and most college students more likely to choose other majors instead of learning VFX production major because they cant see the prospect of this major. All those result in many serious problems,such as lack of talents and advanced technology,without enough financial and policy support from government,and without developed procedure of VFX production. 2.2 The biggest problem of Chinaese VFX industry In so many problems listed above, it is the biggest one that Chinese VFX industry procedure is immature. Apparently,a developed and rigorous procedure is the most essential part of VFX industry. For example,Life of Pi,a remarkable VFX film directed by Taiwan masterful director Ang Lee,took over a year to product VFX and to make the tiger real 15 VFX artists worked about 6 month. The key part of making a successful VFX film is not only slow work yields fine products but also designing every detail including combining VFX production with shooting. However,the circumstance is different-a film could be finished in about 3 month if the producers are requested to catch a date and very little time is left for VFX production,whats more,many parts of the production of those films are disconnected so that VFX shots in Chinese film always drew criticism from all parties. The key point of what leads to this situation is that Chinese VFX industry doesnt have a developed and rigorous procedure. 3. Monster Huntings success However,amazing thing happened that the VFX movie,Monster Hunting, won widespread praise for its wonderful performance and topped the box office of Chinese films in the summer of 2015. From then on,many filmology experts and professors started to find out the factors of Monster Huntings success. Monster Huntings success in VFX benefited from adequate financial and technological support and full preparations. 3.1 The factors of Monster Huntings successAdequate financial support is an important factor.Monster Huntingsuccess was inevitable for it was supported by a financially strong and enterprising in-vestor,Bill Kong,who was also producer of Monster Hunting.Bill Kong commu-nicated with other partners about this film several years ago and convinced them to centralize resource in this film.He not only invested substantial money in this film at the beginning but also supported it unhesitatingly when it was in serious difficulty. Advanced technology support is a basical factor.Monster Hunting was di-rected by Xu Chengyi,who has rich experience in VFX production and took par-ticipate in production of Shrek,a famous and excellent cartoon movie.Whats more,the VFX producting team was made up of the best artists and engineers in China.Full preparation is an essential factor.Its very difficult to combine VFX with ordinary shot perfectly and American directors always design shots with VFX before shooting,when scriptwriter is doing screenwriting to make the VFX per-fect. Bill Kong and Xu Chengyi know that clearly and they started the prelimi-nary work of Monster Hunting several years ago and they assembled many Chinese top artists and engineers,some of whom have experience of working abroad,to form a preeminent team. In Hollywood,director has full control of the movie and company wont require director too much basically. Bill Kong didnt meddle Xu Chengyis work and gave Xu Chengyi full authority and support. Xu Chengyi didnt disappoint Bill Kong. 3.2 The most important factor of Monster Huntings success But primarily,Monster Huntings success should be mostly attributed to the procedure of VFX production they introduced from Hollywood.Because all those factors were to ensure every link of the procedure well executed.Before Monster Huntings success,many film-makers had tried producing films widely using VFX,most of which got adequate financial and technological support but few succeed. VFX production was a new and unfamiliar territory to them. Although they had many excellent artists and enough money,they couldnt maximize the use of those resources. Film-makers of Monster Hunting did it because of the procedure of VFX production. A developed and rigorous procedure of VFX production is the most essential part of Chinese VFX industry,which direct film-makers to do their part and piece every part together. 4. Monster Huntings greatest contribution Monster Huntings success has many contributions that have significant meaning to todays Chinese film VFX production,such as,adequate support-giving,including financial and technological support,director having full control,doing preliminary work,having introduced and applied a developed and rigorous procedure of VFX production and so on. Chinese VFX industrys biggest problem is without a developed and rigorous procedure.Monster Huntings success is mostly attributed to the procedure of VFX production that the film-makers of Monster Hunting have introduced and applied.And their contribution will help Chinese VFX industry grow more developed and rigorous.Therefore,Monster Huntings greatest contribution to Chinese VFX industry is having introduced and applied a developed and rigorous procedure of VFX production.Conclusion Monster Huntings greatest contribution to Chinese VFX industry is having in-troduced and applied a developed and rigorous procedure of VFX production.
