the first olympic games in modern times happened in 1896. they were held in greece the country in which the games were born. in the games there were 311 competitors from just 13 countries. after that more and more countries joined in the games. in 2000, over 10,000 athletes from nearly 200 countries went to sydney, australia, for the 27th olympic games! there are 300 different events in the games. horse-riding, hammer throw and shooting are some of the more unusual events.probably the thing you are most interested in is that china will host the 29th olympic games in beijing. as we know, in sydney the chinese team got 28 gold medals, ranking third of all the competing countries. following the history-making success in the 2000 sydney olympic games, china won another great competition in 2001 which was not for a medal. it was the competition between countries to host the olympic games. in 2008, the 29th olympic games will be held in beijing. to male it the best ever games, the capital city will make several big changes. new buildings and sports venues will be built. more trees will be planted and new roads will be built. the people of beijing, and of the whole country, will be preparing to light the olympic torch to welcome athletes and sports fans from all over the world.in conclusion, today i talked about the olympic games to you. ancient olympic games, the first olympic games in modern times and china hosting the 29th olympic games have been introduced to you. i hope the 29th olympic games will be held successfully in beijing. if you have any questions about the olympic games, id like to discuss them with you.thats all. thank you.after the three students give their presentations, get the whole students to discuss something about the presentations.t: up to now, we have listened three presentations. now work in pairs to discuss the questions at the bottom of page 28. ill give you a few minutes.after a few minutes, check the students work. t: ok, time is up. which pair can give us your answers to the four questions?s: we both think the presentation about the subject of olympic games was the most interesting one.t: can you give us the reason?s: yes. we are all looking forward to the 29th olympic games to be held in beijing, 2008.we have known more about the olympic games from his presentation. we are more proud that china will host the 29th olympic games after listening to his presentation.t: good. youd like to find out more about the olympic games, wouldnt you?s: yes.t: ok. which of the speaking strategies do you think were the most useful?s: the two speaking strategies were the most useful. one is to state clearly what you are going to talk about at the start. thus the listeners can know what the speaker will talk about from the beginning and attract the listeners attention. the other is to finish the presentation with a summary of the main points and ask if there are any questions. if the speaker can make a summary of the main points, we listeners will be very clear of what the speaker have talked about.t: well, how about the last question?s: maybe sometimes we cant follow the speaker to take notes on their talks.t: ok, you are good. so much for the discussion.step iv comparing culturesask the students to discuss some questions related to cultures.t: now lets have a discussion on cultures. work in pairs and discuss the two questions listed in comparing cultures. after a few minutes ill check your work.after a few minutes, check the students discussion result.t: ok. time is up. whod like to tell us something about the first question?
