武邑中学2014-2015高三一轮复习单元检测题一第二部分:阅读理解AI was walking along the main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking for somewhere to make a phone call. My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to contact the AA Company. Low grey clouds were gathering across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet every time I crossed one of the side streets. It had rained in the night and water was dropping from the bare trees that lined the street. I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat. There was no sign of a call box, nor was there anyone at that early hour whom I could ask. I had thought I might find a shop open selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his rounds, but the town was completely dead. The only living thing I saw was a thin frightened cat outside a small restaurant. Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark narrow street. Next to it was the towns only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint. I hurried forward, but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that there was a man inside. He was fat, and was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat. I could not see his face and he didnt raise his head at the sound of my footsteps.Carefully, I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait for my turn. It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red trickling from under the box call door.1. At what time was the story set?A. An early winter morning B. A cold winter afternoonC. An early summer morning D. A windy summer afternoon2. Which of the following words best describe the writers impression of the town?A. cold and frightening B. dirty and crowdedC. empty and dead D. unusual and unpleasant3. The underlined word “trickling” in the last paragraph means_A. rushing out suddenly B. shining brightlyC. flowing slowly in drops D. appearing slowly4. Why didnt the man raise his head when the writer came near?A. He was annoyed at being seen by the writer.B. He was angry at being disturbed by the writer.C. He was probably fast asleep.D. He was probably murdered.BTwo University of Oklahoma scientists are starting research that they hope will someday lead to the development of a vaccine (疫苗) to fight against the HIV virus, which causes AIDS.The research, to be carried out by Mark Lang, an assistant professor and microbiologist John West, will examine the basic aspects of the immune (免疫) system, rather than the complex aspects of the virus. They theorize that if a key function of the bodys immune system can be found exactly, it could be the first step toward developing a vaccine.“To develop a new vaccine, we realized we first have to study and understand the immune system,” Lang said.Lang said their work will focus on researching the basic antibody responses from Natural Killerlike T-cells. A potential vaccine would contain NKT cells and would improve the immune systems antibodies, which fight outside invaders(侵入物)such as HIV by preventing them from entering cells or giving the immune system enough of a boost to kill them.NKT cells, which have been a part of research into cancer and other diseases, have not previously been the focus of HIV research, Lang said. The research will last 18 months, with tests being performed on mice. The Oklahoma Center is giving $ 300,000 toward the research, and if the research proves promising, Lang and West will apply to the National Institutes of Health for more funding.“If we are successful, we will have made an important contribution to the field, but we will still be several steps away from an effective vaccine,” Lang said.Lang said that in best-case scenario(最好的情况),their research could lead to a vaccine ready for use in about four years.5. The research to be carried out will focus on _.A. the immune system B. the test performed on miceC. NKT cells D. the HIV virus6. We can infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 8 that _.A. other researchers need to help themB. the research seems to be a failureC. further research needs to be doneD. the vaccine can kill all viruses7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. Lang works at the National Institutes of Health.B. The research will last one and a half years.C. The vaccine is ready for use.D. The AIDS virus may cause HIV.8. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Two researchers begin to study the immune systemB. NKT cells have been a part of research into cancerC. The relationship between the immune system and HIVD. Two scientists work to develop HIV vaccineCHistory is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery. A striking example is provided by Dr. Otto Loewi, a pharmacologist (药理学家) and winner of a Nobel Prize. Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏). A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row. The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on paper. But the next morning, he couldnt tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the important experiment. Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.Loewis experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions. Nervous feelings are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.Being able to take advantage of dreams for solving is improved if you “set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve. Bury yourself in the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams. Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure. About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.9. The main idea of this passage is that _.A. very little is really known about the meaning of dreamsB. it is possible to “catch” ones dreams by planning before going to sleepC. dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to ones problemsD. Loewis experiment helped in the study of transmission of nerve impulses10. The first paragraph is mainly organized by _.A. classifying types of experimentsB. summarizing the work of one researcherC. comparing and exploring historical casesD. telling in time order about one mans research11. If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake, he would have _.A. asked someone else to do itB. thought it was a bad ideaC. tried it out on his ownD. thought it was a wise idea12. The author probably thinks that _.A. nervous feelings may stop someone thinking of useful ideas B. dreaming is of very little value to most peopleC. Loewi should not have conducted his experimentD. college students should not try out dream experimentsDToday just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have experienced an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear (修剪) sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete change of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.13. According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide _. A. how much money they can earn from their products B. whether to plant a certain kind of cropC. what livestock to raise D. when to sell their products14. Which of the following statements is true? A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers. B. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present. C. Both computers and robots have been in use on todays farms. D. Students at agricultural colleges neednt take their normal agricultural courses.15.What is the best title for the whole passage?A. Computer, Farmers Best Friend B. Farmers in The FutureC. The Agricultural Revolution D. Computers and Robots阅读新题型:Why do some people have many friends while others do not? 16_ However, it is not so. Lets look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations. The first experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company. _17 .The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others, they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them._18_ After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all-white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America. She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown-eyed people were cleverer than blue-eyed ones because of an agent for brown colour found in their blood. Blue -eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown -eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue-eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting. Four poor brown-eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before. _ 19_ .So if you want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their successes and sympathize(同情) with them in their troubles. _20_ .A. Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them.B. Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behaviour to you.C. The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore(忽略) others.D. The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others.E. Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their performance.F. You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them.G. The second experiment tells us what teachers said has a great effect on the students第三部分:When I was a young child, my parents often told me that it was time that taught a man everything. I didnt understand and wondered why 21 had such a big influence 22 a person. I thought I could grow up quickly to find it out as an adult. But now, 23 I come to knock at the door of adulthood, I feel 24 to express my own 25 on this saying. I know that I am just a high school student with very few experiences. There are still many things 26 me in the future, yet I would like to express myself in a childish voice. I once read this sentence, “To make this world a happy place in which to live, you had better 27_ yourself and your heart, instead of the whole world.” I was shocked. It made me think about 28 itself. There are so many things around us that 29 our will. We cant force life to follow our wishes. The earth wont stop turning no matter whether we 30 it or not. What we can do is just to make 31 suit the world. I think we should learn to accept 32 life gives us, no matter whether its the spring sunlight or the winter snowfall, and try to be happy. The pop song Grandmother by Jay Chou is my favorite. Im deeply moved by this beautiful song. I always try to 33 every pleasant thing in my life, but now I see that I dont catch most of the 34 moments. It is more likely that they slip by and leave you 35 regretful. I realize that Im not just living for myself and that there are others I should 36 such as my parents, friends, and so on. They all pay attention to my growing up, 37 its just a little progress.Everyone has his or her own 38 towards life, positive or negative. It doesnt 39 , I think .There is one 40 that should be obeyed and thats to make this world better.21. A. manB. timeC. thingD. parent22. A. aboutB. withC. onD. in23. A. beforeB. afterC. asD. when24.
