this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. not all historical buildings are attractive. however, there may be other reasonsfor example, economic(经济的)reasonswhy they should be preserved. so, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. what should we do then if a new building is needed?in my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. as long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响)its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area. it is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. i think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的)and do not like change. although we have to respect peoples feelings as fellow users of the buildings, i believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. if we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. thus, i would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.1.what does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?a.some of them are not attractive.b.most of them are too expensive to preserve.c.they are more pleasing than modern buildings.d.they have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.2.which of the following is true according to the author?a.we should reproduce the same old buildings.b.buildings should not dominate their surroundings.c.some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.d.no one understands why people speak against new buildings.3.by“move things forward”in the last paragraph, the author probably means“.”a.destroy old buildingsb.put things in a different placec.choose new architectural stylesd.respect peoples feelings for historical buildings4.what is the main purpose of the passage?a.to explain why people dislike change.b.to warn that we could end up living in caves.c.to admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.d.to argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.答案1.a2.c3.c4.dbeveryone looks forward to progress, whether in ones personal life or in the general society. progress indicates a persons ability to change the way he is living at the moment. progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. all these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things. however, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. when communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. the click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each other without even leaving their homes. with the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and ipads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. a personal visit carries with it the additional feature of having to be in the persons presence for as long as the visit lasts. we cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off. with efficiency also comes mass production. such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. factories have improved efficiency. unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. however, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. for example, many handicrafts(手工艺品)are now produced in a factory. although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item. nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. in fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. it is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. new technology is required for old products to stay old. it is peoples attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. technology is flexible. there is no fixed way of making use of it. everything depends on peoples attitude. the worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. when we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.5.according to paragraph 1,progress can benefit people when they are willing to.a.live a better life b.look for better methodsc.change ways of livingd.accept technology and advance steadily6.the underlined word “gadgets” is closest in meaning to.a.toolsb.messagesc.barriersd.skills7.the author explains “efficiency comes with a price” by.a.describing a processb.using examplesc.following time orderd.making classification8.compared with home-made handicrafts,machine-made products.a.lack great accuracyb.lack the personal touchc.are of high valued.are quite welcome9.what can be learned about technology from paragraph 4?a.it can destroy old traditions.b.it can lead to social progress.c.it can be used to correct mistakes.d.it can be used to preserve old products.10.what can be concluded from the last paragraph?a.progress can suit the needs of daily life.b.people review the past with great regret.c.technology should be introduced in a fixed way.d.peoples attitude decides the use of technology.答案5.d6.a7.b8.b9.d10.dcin a historic moment on june 26, the us supreme court ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right across all 50 states. the supreme court justices ruled states cannot deny gay men and women the same marriage rights. the decision means the 13 states with bans on same-sex marriage are no longer able to enforce them.same-sex couples “ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law”. justice anthony kennedy wrote in the majority opinion: “the constitution grants them that right.”the decision came after decades of litigation (诉讼) and activism. it set off celebrations across the us. in affected states including georgia, michigan, ohio and texas, same-sex couples rushed to wed, while officials in mississippi and louisiana said marriages had to wait until procedural issues were addressed, reported the bbc.according to “the new york times”, the ruling came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion in the us, with polls indicating that most americans now approve of same-sex marriage.us president barack obama welcomed the ruling, saying it “affirms what millions of americans already believe in their hearts.” “today,” he said in a press release, “we can say, in no uncertain terms, that we have made our union a little more perfect.”another win.this was the second time the supreme court took up same-sex marriage, according to an article in “business insider”. the first time, in june 2013, the court made a decision that allowed the us federal government to recognize same-sex marriages in states where they were already legal.but at that time, the supreme court declined to rule on the broader question about gay marriage: is there a constitutional (宪法的) right to same-sex marriage? the june 26 ruling gave a positive answer to that question.justice kennedy wrote in the majority opinion that the constitution should evolve with societal changes.“the nature of injustice is that we may not always see it in our own times,” he wrote. “the generations that wrote and ratified the bill of rights and the fourteenth amendment (修正案) did not exactly know the extent of freedom in all of its dimensions, and so they hoped the future generations can protect the right of all persons to enjoy liberty as we learn its meaning.”the fourteenth amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection o
