Then the question comes up: how many friends do we actually need? This week, the footballer revealed in an interview with US Mens Health, “Ive got three really good friends. Its all you need. Id rather have three really good friends than 20 good friends. ”It comes just months after fellow global heartthrob(令人心跳的人)Justin Timberlake said his best friend was a childhood school boy, adding, “I grew up in a small town and I could count my friends on one hand and I still live that way. ”According to Professor Robin Dunbar, head of Oxford University and author of How Many Friends Does One Person Need, the maximum number of people with whom we can really hold personal relationships is 150. Robin Dunbar adds that we are often too concerned about the number of friends we have. Ask yourself about the quality of your friendships, not about the quantity. In Britain the disease spared oaks and jumped to rhododendrons(杜鹃花)and Japanese larch trees. In the last year it has taken hold along the west of the country in larch plantations. Already 4 million trees have been felled or marked for destruction. More are expected to be chopped down in the coming years because the warmer, wetter conditions expected with climate change encourage the spread of the disease. In the latest cull(剔除), a landowner in Somerset was forced to cut down 50, 000 trees, while the National Trust chopped down 10, 000 larch trees in the area. Landowners face crippling costs for felling sick trees. Philip Chambers said that landowners had been forced to pay to chop down larch trees even though the timber was worth very little. He compared the situation to the foot and mouth crisis when farmers were forced to cull their cows to stop the disease spreading. “It is for trees what foot and mouth was for cows, except there is no compensation(补偿)for the landed gentry. ”he said. Experts from the Forestry Commission are carrying out inspections across Britain and will order a cull wherever the disease is found. It takes hold quickly, causing bleeding lesions, blackened or wilted leaves and ultimately death. It can also affect garden shrubs, such as rhododendron and camellia. Charlton Clark, of the commission, said landowners could be offered a small grant to pay for the culls. “The equivalent of 4, 400 football pitches of Japanese larch have so far been confirmed as infected with ramorum disease in the UK, and they either have been or will be felled to prevent the disease from spreading. ”he said. There is no known cure for the disease and Mr Clark warned that Japanese larch could be wiped out in the South West. 64. What caused a lot of oak trees in Britain to be cut down? A. I didnt enroll until my 74th year, and wasnt to graduate until last week. At 78, I finished a BA in history at Birkbeck, University of London. I grew up in wartime Britain and my education was completely destroyed by the war. By the time I left school, aged 15, I had been to 11 different schools. There were sometimes 60 children in a class. If you were seen to be highly able, you sat at the front. Then there was the middle, then the back. I usually sat at the back. After the war, I worked as a black cab driver for 42 years, but always felt very conscious that I hadnt received an education. So I enrolled at Birkbeck, which specializes in evening classes. I soon realized that catching up on the education I had missed as a child wouldnt be easy. I didnt understand a word of my first lecture. With the support of my tutors, I began to study the subject. The tutors were able to guide me. When I had doubts three weeks into the course, my tutor told me, “You will get this BA, no matter what. Any problems, you come and see me. ”The other students also helped to carry me through. It hasnt been an easy journey, but I feel happy to have experienced student life. The day I found out Id passed my degree was full of emotion. You can never be sure that youre going to make itnot until youve made it through the last exam. Id planned to buy my cap and gown, so that when I go to New Zealand next year to visit my son I could wear them and have my photo taken with him. I nearly keeled over in shock when, three days before the graduation ceremony, I answered the front door to find my son standing there. He and his brother had secretly arranged for him to come over from New Zealand for the ceremony. The graduation ceremony last week was one of the proudest moments of my life. My wife, my two sons, my classmates and my tutors were all there to share the moment with me. When I heard my name read out and crossed the stage I
