(A)An old postcard changed the lives of an eleven-year-old boy and a very sick women. The postcard had a picture of the steamship Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank(沉没)on April 14, 1912. More than 1,500of the 2,200 people on the ship were killed. The postcard was passed from one person to another for more than 80 years. Then it appeared at a card show for people who like to collect postcards. An eleven-year-old boy, Joey Russell, came to the show with his grandfather. His grandfather knew everything about the Titanic. “Lets buy the postcard,” he told Joey, “It will be important someday.” Two years later, Joeys grandfather took him on a special trip. They went on a cruise(航行)to the North Atlantic Ocean to watch as workers raised the Titanic up from the bottom of the ocean. Joey put his special postcard in his bag for the trip. On the ship, Joey met Edith Haisman. This woman was on the Titanic when it sank. She was one of the people who were saved. Joey pulled the postcard out of his pocket. “Please sign this, Mrs. Haisman,” he said. She was happy to write her name on the back of the postcard. When Joey got home, he put the postcard away and forgot about it. Then Kate Shelley, one of Joeys friends, told him that her mother, Mary, was very sick. She had leukemia(白血病), which is a very serious blood sickness. She needed an operation, but there was a problem. The operation was very expensive, and the family needed $80,000 to pay for it. Friends and relatives try to help. But where could they get so much money? When Joey went to see the new movie “Titanic”, he had an idea. “Millions of people are seeing this movie and reading about the “Titanic”, Joey thought, “Maybe I can sell the old postcard for some money. Then I can help Kates mom.” Joey told his mother and father about his idea to help Mrs. Shelly. His parents helped him try to sell the postcard to the person who would pay the most money for it. Joeys story was on television and in newspapers. Joey and Kate even went to New York to be on a national TV show. After the show, many people called in office money for the Titanic card. I wasnt a good student because I didnt do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didnt have much to offer. I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasnt too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work more hours one week, shed give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didnt often work out. I was getting very tired, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children. One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification(资格证书)if I wanted to work with children. I didnt think I would be accepted because I didnt take many exams in school. She asked me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience was useful and I was accepted. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work at a kindergarten. Now Ive got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. More than 30 percent of these students go to the United States. Around 15 percent go to Italy, and 10 percent to both England and Germany. A little less than 10 percent go to Australia, and around 5 percent go to Canada. No matter where a student chooses to study, there are some things universities around the world need. First, all students school before they can apply must graduate (毕业) from high universities also need some ( 申 请 ) to a university. Most kind of test for students to enter the university. Universities in the United States, Australia, and Canada usually need some kind of standardized exam, such as the SAT in the United States. Students who do not come from English-speaking countries also must take a test such as the TOEFL in the United States and Canada to show they know enough English to study in English. England and Australia require students to take the IELTS. In most countries, students must apply to each university they hope to go to. However, students applying to universities in England can use one form to apply to six universities at one time through the British Council (英国文化学会). Many students like this because it can save them a lot of time and money. Mark was excited because he knew that it was a great chance to experience a new lifestyle. When he arrived in Liverpool, he was both happy and nervous. The first few months were wonderful. The MBA program was excellent. The courses were interesting, the professors were excellent and the facilities(设施) on the campus were top class. Recently he got into a huge argument with an English lady because he was in a hurry and he tried to get on the bus before her. He couldnt get used to English food. It was terrible. Every week, many children are afraid to go to school. They are afraid they will be picked on(找茬)by a bully. One study found that 52% of children reported being bullied at least once a week. Sixty percent say that they know someone who could harm them. One student was always being teased because he was short. He didnt like to go to school because he had to face the bullies. Some children choose not to go to school at all so they can avoid the bullies. When they miss school, students fall behind their classmates. A new program is helping put an end to this problem. The program is teaching kids how to deal with bullies. This is helping more children feel safe in school. One school principal is working to end this negative(消极的)behavior. Last year, he decided to let students know bullying is not allowed there. Students are now encouraged to report bullies and stand up for themselves. Many children keep bullying a secret. Third, parents should look for warning signs of bullying.
