The Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) is an international Business English examination, which offers a language qualification for learners who use, or will need to use, English for their work. Recognition of BEC is increasing rapidly as a growing number of companies are using the examination as a focus for in-company training courses.II. BEC is available at 3 levels:Cambridge BEC PreliminaryCambridge BEC Intermediate (Vantage)Cambridge BEC Advanced (Higher)III. Cambridge BEC Preliminary is a practical examination that focuses on English in business-related situations. The major emphasis is on the development of language skills for work: reading, writing, listening and speaking.All Cambridge BEC Preliminary candidates receive a statement of results showing their overall grade (Pass with Merit, Pass, Narrow Fail or Fail) and their strengths and weaknesses. Successful candidates also receive a certificate. Each part represents 25% of the total mark.Exceptional Good Borderline WeakAn overview of the different parts of the examination:1. Reading & Writing 90 minutes. Reading: 7 parts Writing: 2 parts (e-mail, memo or note, formal letter, fax)2. Listening 40 minutes 4 parts (Approx.12 minutes of listening material played twice plus time to transfer answers)3. Speaking 12 minutes 3 parts (personal information, short talk and collaborative task.)2 examiners and 2 or 3 candidatesIV. An overviewThe different tests tend to cover the following:Reading: notices, advertisements, graphs, charts, product descriptions and short textsWriting: e-mails, notes, memos and formal letters (all with word limits)Listening:short conversations, telephone conversations, announcements, longerconversations and monologuesSpeaking: giving personal information, giving a short talk and discussing a scenario.T reassures Ss that the course will provide practice in all four skills. The following units in this book contain relevant material that will give students information about how to succeed in each of the examination tests. Unit 1 (A) Job description I. Teaching Process: i.Unit overviewDutiesTalking about your jobSelf-studyii.Detailed study of the textStep 1 Duties Ex.1 ListeningT Introduces the Chamber of Commerce:It is an organization which operates on a local basis; it helps businesses by promoting the area; it offers business opportunities for its members through a variety of services and events.T focuses Ss attention on the business cards and classifies job vocabulary where necessary. Ss listen to six new Chamber of Commerce members speaking and number the business cards in the order in which the people speak.Notes:1. T elicits from the group what they think their duties are.Ss listen to Helen Marsden and Robin Seaton in order to find out whether their predictions were correct.Ex.3 ListeningSs read the notes about Helen Marsden and Robin Seaton before listening to the cassete again. T uses the feedback to check whether Ss have problems with the third person s when talking about the peoples jobs. Ex.4 Reading This activity can be used to make the point that it is often not necessary to understand every word in order to extract sufficient meaning for the readers purpose. Ask Ss to underline the vocabulary which suggested the answer. Ss decide individually which person each question is for.Ss read the notes about Helen Marsden and Robin Seaton before listening to the cassette again. Help Ss complete the notes. Then check answers.Step 2 Talking about your jobEx.1 Vocabulary Ss match sentence halves about Beth. This enables Ss to review some general work-related vocabulary which they will need in order to speak about their jobs.T then ensures that Ss are aware that prepositions are followed by a noun or-ing e.g. I deal with questionsIm responsible for checking.My job also involves giving financial advice.Notes:1. As part of my job I have to produce financial reports. produce: put or bring forward to be looked at or examined 2. I am based in Reading=My company is based in Reading把基地设在. /e/Ex2.SpeakingSs work in pairs to find out about their parents job. This allows Ss to practise the present simple and some of the vocabulary from this unit. T reminds Ss that they can use the phrases used by Beth Lambert in Ex1. Step3 Self-studyThe students may have some difficulty in Ex.5 Exam practice,so T should further help them grasp the usage of the key words and phrases in the passage by more explanations, especially the collocations .Unit1(B)Working conditionsI. Teaching Objectives:i. To enable Ss to talk about working conditionsii. To practice reading for gist and for specific informationiii. To review adverbs of frequencyII. Materials needed: Cassette Pass Cambridge BEC PreliminaryIII. Teaching Process: Comments about work: Reading: Ss look at comments made by employees and answer comprehension questions. Speaking: Ss use the adverbs of frequency to talk about what they do at /outside work. Ss then decide w they would deal with the problems /comments in the comments box.Terms and conditions of employment:Vocabulary: Ss match vocabulary in preparation for the reading task.Reading: Ss read the text and answer multiple-choice comprehension questions. Speaking: Ss discuss the conditions of employment.ii.Detailed study of the textStep 1 Comments about workEx1 Ss read the comments in order to answer the questionsNote: give a presentation 介绍情况Ex2. VocabularyT asks Ss to underline any adverbs of frequency in the comments and checks their meaning. Ss then look at the adverbs of frequency in the exercises and write them in the appropriate place on the cline. They then compare their order with a partner.Ex3. Grammar Ss look at the comments again in order to work out the position of adverbs of frequency. Help Ss complete the Dont forget section.1) Words such as always, usually, often, frequently, sometimes, occasionally, rarely and never usually come before the verb.2) However, these words come after the verb to be.3) Words such as hourly, daily, weekly, annually and monthly come after the verb, often at the end of the sentence.Note: Recently they had an accident.They recently had an accident.They had an accident recently.Ex4. Speaking Ss work in pairs to discuss routines: both work-related and personal.Step 2 Terms and conditions of employmentEx1.
