Scientists used to believe we had six basic facial expressions that tell others how we feel: sad, happy, surprised, fearful, angry and disgusted(恶心的). But a new study shows that our faces can do-more than we think.Scientists from Ohio State University found out that humans can actually make 21 different facial expressions alter studying how people move their facial muscles(肌肉). The scientists took pictures of 230 volunteers making faces in response to different descriptions. These included phrases like you just got some great unexpected news, which produced a happily surprised reaction from volunteers. Others included you smell a bad odor, which caused disgusted faces. In total, around 5,000 pictures were taken of the volunteers. The scientists then studied similarities of these pictures. This helped them to define a facial expression. That tells us that these 21 emotions are expressed in the same way by nearly everyone, said Dr Aleix Martinez to The Daily Telegraph. For example, to express surprise, 92 percent of volunteers widened their eyes and opened their mouth. And 99 percent raised their cheeks and smiled to show being happy. We are not always aware of our facial expressions, which can hold clues to how we really feel. So these results may have a big influence on medical treatment. If doctors were able to recognize more complex(复杂的)emotions, it would help doctors treat patients suffering from certain diseases. (1)How many facial expressions can human beings make, according to the study? A . 6B . 21C . 27D . 230(2)How do most people make a surprised face? A . By opening their eyes and mouths wideB . By raising their cheeks.C . By covering their mouths with their hands.D . By laughing out loud(3)In which order did the scientists do the experiment? a. Take pictures of volunteers facial expressions.b. Compare the pictures to find similarities.c. Direct volunteers with different descriptions.d. Find 230 volunteers to take part in the experiment.A . a-b-c-dB . a-d-b-cC . d-a-c-bD . d-c-a-b(4)Which of the following is TRUE? A . Humans cant make fake facial expressions.B . Facial expressions cant show how we really feel.C . People can show the same emotion with different expressions.D . Studying facial expressions can help to improve medical treatments.19. (10分)阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 In 1845, a deadly disease struck the farms of Ireland, killing all the Lumper potato plants. In another place or time, the death of single crop species (物种) might not have been so important. But in Ireland, in 1845, people depended almost solely on the potato for food. The death of one species caused a terrible famine(饥荒). Now, some scientists are worried that such a famine could happen again, but on a much wider scale.Over the centuries, farmers have discovered thousands of different species of food crops. Each species has special qualities. Some can be grown in very hot or cold climates. Others are not affected by certain diseases. However, you wont find many of these species in your local supermarket. To feed the seven billion people on Earth, most farmers today are growing only species of plants and farming only species of animals that are easy to produce in large numbers. For example, in the Philippines, there were once thousands of varieties of rice: now fewer than 100 are grown there. In China, 90 percent of the wheat varieties grown just a century ago have disappeared. Scientists believe that over the past century, we have allowed more than half of the worlds food varieties to disappear. One solution to this problem is to collect and store the seeds (种子) as many different plant varieties as we can before they disappear. The idea was first suggested by Russian scientist Nikolay Vavilov. In the 1920s and 1930s, he collected around 400,000 seeds from five contients. More recently, others are continuing the work he began. In the U.S. state of Iowa, Diane Ott Whealy wanted to protect historic plant varieties, like the seeds her great grandfather brought to the U.S. from Germany more than a hundred years ago. She and her husband started a place called Heritage Farm, where people can store and trade seeds.More importantly, the people at Heritage Farm dont just store the seeds; they plant them. By doing this, they are reintroducing foods into the marketplace that havent been grown for years. These food species are not just special in terms of appearance or taste. They also offer farmers food solutions for the future, from the past.(1)What is this passage mainly about? A . The need to protect different food species.B . How to increase the number of food species.C . The fact that many food species are dying out.D . How to prevent food species from disappearing.(2)Why are some scientists worried that such a famine could happen again? A . Because people depend on certain species of food crops.B . Because the same deadly disease may attack crops again.C . Because the worlds population is larger than that in 1845.D . Because farmers grow the same potatoes as those in the past.(3)The following sentence would best be placed at the end of _. Meanwhile, thousands of other species are dying out.A . Paragraph 1B . Paragraph 2C . Paragraph 3D . Paragraph 4(4)What can we learn from the passage? A . The disease spread very quickly and killed thousands of people in Ireland.B . Around 80 percent of the rice varieties in the Philippines have disappeared.C . People have been storing seeds to save plane varieties for less than 100 years.D . Heritage Farm is the first place in the U.S. for people to store and trade seeds.四、 任务型阅读(10分,每小题2分) (共1题;共10分)20. (10分)阅读短文,回答下列问题。 Long long ago there was a thief. However, there is an outgoing discussion about whether schools should continue to teach history. This passage will deal with the arguments that oppose and support teaching history in school, concluding that we should teach history, because the value of the subject goes beyond the classroom.First of all, many pupils suggest that history is one of the less interesting school subjects and that governments should spend the time and money on subjects that are more useful. Some people argue that math and English are should spend the money on more important so we can have a society with a good basic education. Other people say that teaching science, as this can move a country forward and benefit the economy. However, when we teach history, we are just looking back at the past. The economic benefits of this area are less obvious. On the other hand, there are several reasons why it is a good idea to teach history. Teaching history is important because students should be able to understand the background to current issues in the news. This will create better-informed citizens. Another reason is that it helps pupils to understand the culture and background of the society they live in. In addition to learning about the past, history teaching can help students to think for themselves. Finally, it also improves pupils reading and writing skills, which can help them become better students. In conclusion, though there are clearly arguments on both sides, it seems to me that we should of the classes. I would say the teaching of history helps to create well-educated generation.Title: _Why people oppose history teachingWhy people support history teachingHistory isnt that interesting and it brings less obvious economic benefits.
