They are brought sport, comedy, drama, music, news and current affairs, education, religion, parliamentary coverage, childrens programmes and films for an annual license fee of 83 per household. It is a remarkable record, stretching back over 70 yearsyet the BBCs future is now in doubt. The Corporation will survive as a publiclyfunded broadcasting organization, at least for the time being, but its role, its size and its programmes are now the subject of a nationwide debate in Britain. The debate was launched by the Government, which invited anyone with an opinion of the BBCincluding ordinary listeners and viewersto say what was good or bad about the Corporation, and even whether they thought it was worth keeping. The reason for its inquiry is that the BBCs royal_charter runs out in 1996 and it must decide whether to keep the organization as it is, or to make changes.Defenders of the Corporationof whom there are manyare fond of quoting the American slogan. If it aint broke, dont fix it. The BBC aint broke, they say, by which they mean it is not broken (as distinct from the word broke, meaning having no money), so why bother to change it?Yet the BBC will have to change, because the broadcasting world around it is changing. The commercial TV channelsITV and Channel 4were required by the Thatcher Governments Broadcasting Act to become more commercial, competing with each other for advertisers, and cutting costs and jobs. But it is the arrival of new satellite channelsfunded partly by advertising and partly by viewers subscriptionswhich will bring about the biggest changes in the long term.()56. In the passage, which of the following about the BBC is not mentioned as the key issue?A. Extension of its TV service to Far East.B. Programmes as the subject of a nationwide debate.C. It might understand more than you think.A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3yearold child. Its wordlearning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee. In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico was supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four test, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldnt see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of 10 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed(品牌) known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9yearold dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. Its hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they cant talk back. Still, it wouldnt hurt to sweettalk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!()63. From Paragragh 2 we know that _.A. animals are as clever as human beingsB. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzeesC. chimpanzees have very good wordlearning skillsD. dogs have similar learning abilities as 3yearold children()64. Both experiments show that _.A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands rightB. Rico can recognize different things including toysC. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematicsD. Rico wont forget the names of objects once recognizing them()65. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collies mental abilities.B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training.C. The border collie is worldfamous for recognizing objects.D. Rico is born to understand its owners commands.()66. What does the writer want to tell us?A. To train your dog. B. To talk to your dog.C. To be kind to your dog. D. To be careful with your dog.DThere are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world, even the seasonal changes, as unpredictable, and they sought through various means, to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those whol believed that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances, and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the “acting area” and the “auditorium”. In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or super natural beings, and mimed the desired effectsuccess in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sunas an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.Another story traces the theaters origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to this view, tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated,
