rather tired. No doubt you are looking forward to meeting the families youre going to be staying with during the next month. Now,please listen carefully to the following arrangements as the various families are waiting in groups to meet you.If your surname, your family name, begins with the letter A to F,your host family will be waiting for you in this hall.At the end of the meeting, you should wait behind in here. Now,for those of you whose names begin with G to L,you should go downstairs, not upstairs, but downstairs to the dining room. When you get there, make sure you go to the far end of the room by the drink machine.Thats important as people whose names begin with letters from M to R should also go downstairs and wait at the opposite end of the dining room near the doors into the garden. And the final groupthose of you with names from S to Z,must go out of this hall, past the office to the car park, where the bus stopped when you arrive at.All rightgo out to where the cars are parked by the main gate and your families will be waiting there.18.Who is the speaker most probably speaking to?A.Football players ready for a match.B.Exchange students from abroad.C.Soldiers coming back to their families.答案:B19.Where should Mary Clinton meet her host family?A.In the very hall where the speaker is speaking.B.Downstairs at the end of the dining room near the doors into the garden.C.Downstairs at the end of the dining room by the drinks machine.答案:A20.Where must Oliver Twist go to meet his host family?A.Nowhere but stay where he is now.B.Downstairs to the dining room.C.Out of the hall to the car park. ABritish scientists have done something that many people thought was impossible:they created the first clone of an adult mammal(哺乳动物).The clone, named Dolly,is a seven-month-old sheep, grown from a cell of an adult female sheep. What is a clone?A clone is a copya genetic copy.Genes are the instructions for life. They tell a cell what to do and how to do it.Genes make each individual plant or animal different and unique. But a clone has the same genes as the original organism(生物体).Cloning is not new.Plants have been cloned for centuries.New plants are often grown from cutting from another plant. Also, plants like pineapples, strawberries and carnations(康乃馨)are sometimes cloned. One benefit of cloning is that we can make many copies of the best and healthiest plants. It has been much more difficult to clone animals.Frogs have been cloned, but they died as tadpoles, never living long enough to become adult frogs.Mice, sheep and cattle have been cloned from embryos(胚胎).But Dolly is the first healthy clone of an adult mammal. How did they do it?(1)An unfertilized egg was taken from a sheep.(2)The egg nucleus(细胞核)was removed.(3)A cell was taken from the udder(乳房) of a pregnant(怀孕的)sheep. It was “starved”,so that it stopped growing.(4)The two cells were combined into one and then implanted in a third sheep, where it grew normally.(5) The clone was born.It was genetically identical to the pregnant sheep in step (3).This sounds much easier than it actually was.To end up with one clone, the scientists started with 277 udder cells. And they needed in a way to make the egg cell accept a new nucleus. They did that by starving the cell in step (3).It may soon be possible to clone many types of animals. Will we also be able to clone human organs,or even whole human beings? We have only begun to think about the morality of cloning technology.Maybe the question to ask is not whether we can clone humans, but instead, should we clone humans?21.Dolly is a sheep because she is grown from a cell of an adult female sheep.A.that has not her father B.that has not her motherC.that has no parentsD.that has not any tail答案:C解析:推理判断题。 22.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Only plants can be cloned.B.Only strawberries and carnations can sometimes be cloned.C.Animals and plants have quite a long history of cloning.D.Genes can tell a cell what to do and how to do it during cloning. 23.From the fourth paragraph we can know that .A.a tadpole is the early stage of a grown-up frogB.a tadpole is a frog without a tailC.a tadpole is a kind of animalD.a tadpole is a clone of an adult mammal答案:A解析:推理判断题。 24.Which is the right order in the process of the clone of Dolly?a.Taking an unfertilized egg from an adult female sheep.b.Removing the eggs nucleus.c.Combining the two cells into one and then implanting it in a third sheep.d.Taking a cell from the udder of a pregnant sheep.A.a b c dB.c a b dC.a b d cD.d c b a答案:C解析:细节排序题。 BHave you seen JurassicPark? In this film, scientists use DNA kept for tens of millions of years to clone dinosaurs. They find trouble, however, when they realize that the cloned creatures are smarter and more dangerous than expected.Thats nothing more than a fiction. But could we really clone endangered animals? To date, the most successful attempt to do so was the cloning of a gaur(野牛),a rare ox-like animal from southeast Asia.Scientists used a cow to bring the cloned baby gaur, named Noah. Two days after birth, however,Noah died from a common bacterial infection.Other endangered species that may be cloned include the African bongo antelope(邦戈羚羊),the Sumatran tiger, the cheetah(猎豹),and the giant panda.Next, could we really clone extinct animals? In theory?Yes.To do this, you need a well-kept source of DNA from the extinct animals such as wool mammoth(毛象),Tasmanian tiger,or even dinosaur, and a closely related species, still living, which could serve as a surrogate mother. In reality?Probably not.On the one hand, its not likely that extinct animals DNA could survive undamaged for such a long time.Cloning extinct animals as wool mammoth,Tasmanian tiger,or dinosaur is much more difficult due to the lack of properly well-preserved DNA.On the other hand, for example,a gaur can have a cow as a surrogate mother, definitely not a monkey. But what about an extinct animal as unique as the panda? What species could possibly serve as a surrogate mother?Cloning presents many exciting possibilities. However, even if extinct animals are brought back, they could not survive in todays world. Not only do most extinct animals have no habitat to live in,but the other plants and animals they depended on for food may also be gone as well.25.It can be learned from the text that .A.scientists have cloned the African bongo antelopeB.both the cheetah and the giant panda live in AsiaC.the gaur lives in Asia and is endangeredD.the gaur is an extinct species答案:C解析:推理判断题。 26.The underlined words “a surrogate mother” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to a female who .A.contributes its eggs to another femaleB.gives birth to a baby for another femaleC.gives birth to a baby of its ownD.cannot give birth to a baby答案:B解析:词义猜测题。 27.The difficulty in cloning an extinct species is the lack of .A.both the well-preserved DNA and the plants to live onB.both the habitat to live in and the well-preserved DNAC.both the habitat to live in and the plants to live onD.both the well-preserved DNA and a surrogate mother答案:D解析:细节理解题。 28.In the authors opinion,it is possible that .A.some extinct species may be cloned, but not survive in todays worldB.extinct species may be cloned and easily surviveC.a gaur can have a monkey as a surrogate motherD.all the extinct species may be cloned答案:A解析:推理判断题。 CA 10-month-old baby boy died last year and his sad parents have vowed to give him a second chance at life.Theyve paid $500,000 to have a company called Clonaid make a clone of their son.“We will do all that is possible to bring the twin of this boy back to life,” said Brigitte Boisselier, director of Clonaid.Boisselier is not alone in her desire to duplicate (复制) a human.Another team of scientists recently announced that they, too, have begun a similar experiment. If either team is successful in copying a human being,it will be a truly earthshaking event. In 1997,Scottish researcher Ian Wilmut created the worlds first animal clone:a sheep named Dolly.First,he removed an egg cell from an adult female sheep. Then he used a fine needle to suck out the eggs nucleus(核子).Next,Wilmut removed a skin cell from another sheepthe sheep he wished to copy.He combined the two cells with a charge of electricity and got an egg from one animal that contained the DNA of another. The new egg cell divided and developed into an embryo (the first stage of a baby).Wilmut then implanted the embryo in the mother sheep. In time, the embryo developed into a lambDolly.Four years later, sheep, mice, cows, and goats have been “produced” in laboratories around the globe. Now,the race is on to produce the first human clone. Two scientific teams are publicly competing for the first place.Human cloning is “just around the corner,” said Zavos,a scientist of a team.“The genie (妖怪) is out of the bottle.” Clonaids lab may be moved to another country because the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has forbidden the labs research.29.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Ian Wilmut will help to clone the first human in the world.B.Ian Wilmut cloned the first animal with the help of electricity.C.The two teams are working hard to realize the parents dream.D.The parents paid $500,000 to have their son come back to life. 30.By saying “The genie is out of the bottle” in the last paragraph, the scientist means.A.the first cloned human will look terribleB.we dont know what the cloned human will be like C.we arent sure how to control the cloned humans behaviourD.there will be some harm we havent imagined with human cloning答案:D解析:句意理解题。 31.It could be inferred from the passage that.A.some people dont agree to clone humans B.scientists can clone whatever they likeC.any animal can be cloned nowD.the purpose of human cloning is to make money答案:A解析:推理判断题。由文章最后一段最后一句“FoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)hasfo
