makesure it is tangible.to doI was appointed asgoodwill ambassador for UNwomen sixmonths ago.And moreI havespoken aboutfeminism.The moreI haverealized thatfighting forwomens rightshas toooften beesynonymous withman-hating.If there is ohing Iknow forcertain.It is that thishas tostop.For therecord,feminism bydefinition isthe beliefthat men and womenshould haveequal rightsand opportunities.It isthe theoryof thepolitical,economic andsocial equallyof thesexes.I startedquestioning gender-based assumptionsalong timeago.When I was8,Iwasconfused beingcalled“bossy”,because I wanted todirect theplays weshould puton forour parents.But theboys werenot.When Iwas14,I startedbeing sexualizedby certainelements ofmedia.When Iwas15,my girlfriendsstarted droppingout of their sportsteams,because theydidnt wantto appear“muscle”.When Iwas18,my malefriends wereunable toexpress theirfeelings.I decidedthat Iwas afeminist.And thisseemed unplicatedto me.But myrecent researchhas shownme thatfeminism hasbee anunpopular word.Women arechoosing notto identifyas feminists.Apparently I am amongthe ranksof womenwhose expressionsare seenas toostrong,too aggressive,isolating,and anti-men,unattractive even.Why hasthe wordbee suchan unfortableone?I amfrom Britain.And I think it is rightI ampaid the same as my malecounterparts.I thinkit isright that I shouldbe ableto makedecisions aboutmy ownbody.I thinkit isright thatwomen beinvolved onmy behalfin thepolitics anddecision-making ofmy life.Ithinkit isright thesocially Iam affordedthe samerespect asmen.But sadly,I cansay thatthereisno onecountry lifeis asheer privilege,because myparents didnt loveme lessbecause Iwas borna daughter.My schooldid notlimit mebecause Iwas agirl.My mentorsdidnt assumeI wouldgo lessfar,because Imight givebirth toa childone day.These influenceswere thegenderequalityambassadors thatmade mewho Iam today.They maynot knowit.But they are theinadvertent feministswho werechanging theworld today.We needmore of those.And ifyou stillhate theword,it isnot theword thatis important;it isthe ideaand theambition behindit,because notallwomenhave receivedthe samerights thatI have.In fact,statistically,very fewhave been.In1997,Hilary Clintonmade afamous speechin Beijingabout womens rights.Sadly,many ofthe thingsshe wantedto changeare stilltrue today.But whatstood outfor methe mostwas theless than30percent ofthe seenmen madefragile and insecure bydistorted senseof whatconstitutes malesuess.Men dont havethe benefitsof equalityeither.We dont oftentalkaboutmen beingimprisoned bygender stereotypes,but Ican seethat theyare.And whentheyarefree,things willchange forwomen asa naturalconsequence.If mendont haveto be aggressive inorder to be aepted.Women wont feelpelled to be submissive.If mendont haveto control,women wont havetobecontrolled.Both menand womenshould feelfree tobe sensitive.Both menand womenshould feelfree tobe strong.It istime thatwe allperceive genderon aspectrum,instead oftwo setsof
