This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that youre “hot”. Thats true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as: “Get up, John! Youll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You cant change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe youre sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent (程度) by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This wont change your cycle, but youll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn (哈欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do dairy work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration (集中) for your sharper hours. 56. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably _. A. he is a lazy person B. he refused to follow his own energy cycle C. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening D. he is not sure when his energy is low57. A. change his energy cycle B. overcome his laziness C. get up earlier than usual D. go to bed earlier 59. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will _. A. help to keep your energy for the days work B. help you to control your temper early in the day C. enable you to concentrate on your dairy work D. keep your energy cycle under control all day 60. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Getting off to work with a minimum(最少的) effort helps save ones energy. B. Youd better get everything ready the night before if your energy peak is in the evening. B Despite her delayed flight, Shirley Sharratt, 48, was excited to arrive in Pensacola last week and see her sister Jenna Calloway, 44. The two sisters last saw each other more than 30 years ago when they were separated by the state child protection services in Seattle. “It was exciting,” said Calloway. “We didnt know what to do we hugged and hugged and just looked at each other.”When she was just 11, Calloway said she and Sharratt, who had the same mother but different fathers, were taken away from their parents and placed into foster (寄养的) care. “We had a really bad childhood,” Calloway said, “When her dad found her, he took her away, and I stayed in the foster home.”For years Calloway tried to find her sister. After hitting several dead ends, she finally found her about six months ago with the help of the Internet. “I wanted to go and see her, but her husband had just passed away and so it was not a good time,” she said. At the face-to-face reunion last week, Calloway and her family gave Sharratt a celebrity-style welcome, Rebekah Williams, Calloways 22-year-old daughter, held up welcome signs and reveled in the fun. Sharratt said she and Calloway talked into the wee hours of the morning, and she hardly remembered when she fell asleep. They chatted about children and grandchildren and thought about some of the fun times and laughed at the time when Sharratt tried to shave off her eyebrows. “We were joking about how we looked now, too,” Calloway said, “We had a really bad childhood, but we are just glad to have each other now.” “I just feel like Im at home,” said Sharratt, who lives in Mount Vernon, Washington, but likes to be closer to her sister.” “For the first time, I feel like I actually belong.” 61. He hardly every wears a necktie. “Im working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.” More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday, but only on Friday. This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones. Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that its easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people dont want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so its hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress cod.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss Company, 85 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative effect on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress cod helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said, “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.” 66.
