Just examine the studentsschool weeks and you will find that they areframed by pretests, drills, tests and retests.Preparation for tests has practically been takenas the acquisition of knowledge and skills.Detailed tests are imposed to ensure the so-called“quality education.” Many people are questioning the phenomenon of“teaching to the test.” but can we do anythingabout it? Hardly. Ours is an age of test-taking,and tests are like guards posted at the doorwayof almost every educational level and of manyoccupations. As we know, teachers andadministrators are well-intentioned; they areunder intense and relentless pressure. Theyimpose all sorts of drills and tests on students inthe hope that worthwhile learning will occur. To be fair, tests are no evils by themselves. Well-designed tests can show us what we have learned about asubject and help make our new knowledge permanent. Sometimes tests can even help us to knowourselves - to know our strengths as well as weaknesses. Unfortunately the actual purpose of examsand tests has long been ignored. All our attention goes to grades and scores. No one gives a thought tothe nature and quality of what is taught. It is difficult to prevent or reverse this trend of“teaching to the test.” But sensitive and creativestudents can still make the best of the tests theyare taking. Benjamin Franklin says, “Tell me and Iforget. Teach me and I remember.
