Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEETl.Text 1 When a 13-year-old Virginia girl started sneezing, her parents thought it was merely a cold. But when the sneezes continued for hours, they called in a doctor. Nearly two months later the girl was still sneezing, thousands of times a day, and her case had attracted worldwide attention.Hundreds of suggestions, ranging fromput a clothes pin on her noseto have her stand on her headpoured in . But nothing did any good. Finally, she was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Where Dr. Leo Kanner, one of the worlds top authorities on sneezing, solved the baffling(难以理解的)problem with great speed. He used neither drugs nor surgery, curiously enough, the clue for the treatment was found in an ancient superstition about the amazing bodily reaction we call the sneeze. It was all in her mind, he said,a view which Aristotle, some 3,000 years earlier, would have agreed with heartily.Dr. Kanner simply gave a modern psychological interpretation to the ancient belief that too much sneezing was an indication that the spirit was troubled; and he began to treat the girl accordingly.Less than two days in a hospital room,a plan for better scholastic and vocational adjustment, and reassurance about her unreasonable fear of tuberculosis quickly changed her from a sneezer to an ex-sneezer, he reported.Sneezing has always been a subject of wonder, awe and puzzlement. Dr. Kanner has collected thousands of superstitions conceming it. The most universal one is the custom of begging for the blessing of God when a person sneezes-a practice Dr. Kanner traces back to the ancient belief that a sneeze was an indication that the sneezer was possessed of an evil spirit. Strangely, people over the world still continue the custom with the traditional, God bless you or its equivalent. When scientists look at the sneeze, they see a remarkable mechanism which, without any conscious help from you, takes on a job that has to be done. When you need to sneeze you sneeze, this being nature s clever way of getting rid of an annoying object from the nose. The object may be just some dust in the nose which nature is striving to remove.46. The girl sneezed continuously because she _ .A was illB was mentally illC had heavy mental burdenD had attracted world-wide attention47. When the girl began to sneeze continuously,_ .A a lot of people offered their adviceB she was taken to Johns Hopkins HospitalC she was given a treatment found in ancient superstitionD many doctors treated her in different ways48. Dr. Kanner cured the girl by _A using Aristotle s methodB giving her psychological treatmentC practicing superstitionD treating her tuberculosis49. When a person sneezes,we sayGod bless youbecause _ .A it s a traditionB the person is possessed of an evil spirit .C the person is illD God will bless those who sneeze50. According to scientists, people sneeze becauseA they are illB to sneeze is human natureC they do not need any conscious helpD there are unwanted things in their nosesText 2 There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought healthwamings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels ( coal and oil)is creating a greenhouse effect-conserving heat reflected from the earth and raisingthe world s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water. Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth s temperature-a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop ofjust a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen ( though one recent govemment report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world s temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profit, people neglect the damage on our environment caused by the advanced civilization. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their develop-ment. But is it really worthwhile? 51. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollutionA caused widespread damage in the countrysideB affected the entire eastern half of the United StatesC had damaged effect on healthD existed merely in urban and industries areas52. As to the greenhouse effect, the author .A shares the same view with the scientistsB is uncertain of its occurrenceC rejects it as being ungroundedD thinks that it will destroy the world soon53. The word offset in the second paragraph could be replaced by _ .A slip into B make up for C set up D catch up with54. It can be concluded that _ .A raising the world s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earthB lowering the world s temperature merely a few degrees would lead many major farming areas to disasterC almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decadeD the worlds temperature will remain constant in the years to come55. This passage is primarily about .A the greenhouse effectB the burning of fossil fuelsC the potential effect of air pollutionD the likelihood of a new ice ageText 3 My family and I recently returned from a trip to Alaska, a place that combines supematural beauty with a breathtaking amount of bear risks.Ill start with some facts at a glance:WHERE ALASKA IS:Way the hell far from you. Beyond Mars.HOW YOU GET THERE:You sit in a variety of airplanes for most of your adult life.WHAT THEY HAVE THERE THAT WILL TRY TO KILL YOU:Bears.I am quite serious about this. Although Alaska is now an official state in the United States with modern conveniences such as rental cars and frozen yogurt, it also allows a large number of admitted bears to stride freely, and nobody seems to be the least bit alarmed about this. In fact, the Alaskans seem to be proud of it. You walk into a hotel or department store, and the first thing you see is aglass case containing a stuffed bear the size of a real one. Our hotel had two of these. It was what we travel writers call a two-bear hotel. Both bears were sta
