Miller s father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn like so many others by the“ Great American Dream”. However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.Millers s most famous play, Death of a Salesman , is a powerful attack on the American system ,with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman , the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with his worth. Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment : if he cant do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end. When it was first staged in 1949 ,the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews ,and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut ,on the evening of February 10,2005,the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.16. According to research, a woman with an attractive face is taken by men to be fertile (能生育的) and able to continue the family line, appealing to the mans survival instinct. In contrast women take longer to decide their feelings for a man because they need to weigh up whether he will be a committed partner who will provide for them well part of their survival programming. They tested men and womens preference towards looks by conducting a series of tests on 20 women and 20 men, making them perform tasks while recording their brain activity. While the subjects were doing the task they were shown a series of photographs of faces of the opposite sex, ranging from attractive to ugly.Men were easily distracted when they saw a pretty face but women stuck to the task.Prof van Vugt said: “Men definitely have the most wandering eye but it is because they have evolved to pay attention to cues of fertility and one of those cues is facial beauty its not that men are shallow.”But we found they do make snap judgments about women, much earlier than was previously thought. They make that decision on whether a woman would be a good mating partner in milliseconds. This is something very ancient and a way of helping men find the best mate to produce children.Women were not distracted by attractive male faces because women need more proof of whether a man is a good mate.“Women make that decision on behaviour, whether a man is trustworthy and committed. They make their decision much later than men.”19. Men like the women whose faces are beautiful because they think . A. the women are very beautiful B. the women are the only they love C. the women can be liked by their familiesD. the women can continue their families line 20. The underlined word “snap” may mean . A. late B. quick C. long D. clear 21. It can be inferred that . A. to find a best mate takes a man more time B. to find a best mate takes a woman more timeC. to find a best mate isnt important for a man D. to find a best mate isnt important for a woman22. The main idea of the passage is . A. that men love beauty because of gene B. helping men find the best mate to produce childrenC. testing men and womens preference towards looks D. that mem were easily distracted when they saw a pretty faceC Nearly two million drivers in the UK have had accidents due to “Baby on Board” signs and childrens toys that affect their view, according to alarming new research. One in 20 motorists says stickers and playtime paraphernalia (装备) are to blame for a collisionequivalent to 1.85 million of Britains 37 million drivers. The discovery triggered a warning by a road safety charityBrake to cut down on clutter (杂乱的东西) in the car.Deputy chief executive Julie Townsend said “Baby on Board” signs were very useful in alerting the emergency services that a child may be involved in case of a crash. “This help can become negative if drivers display signs when their child isnt in the car,” she said. “Worse still is the danger that can be caused by drivers influencing their view by cluttering up (塞满) windows with lots of signs. Drivers priority should always be getting there safely without putting themselves, young passengers or other road users at risk.”A survey arranged by price comparison website C found that 37 percent of parents have displayed signs and four out of five of them believe they improve safety. But 46 percent admit doing so at all timesregardless of whether or not their child is in the carand 15 percent admit they only have them for their novelty value. The poll of 2,000 drivers also found that 46 percent of drivers regard them as a risk and 33 percent say they are lacking in taste.“There are benefits and dangers to Baby on Board signs. They can offer useful information for medical aid in case of a crash but having too many novelty items displayed could be a safety issue,” said a C spokesman.23. What do we learn about the signs on the car from Paragraph 1?A. They can be dangerous. B. They are useful to avoid accidents.C. They are welcomed by passengers. D. They are forbidden to be used.24. What is Julie Townsends attitude towards the signs?A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Uninteresting.25. According to the survey, most of the drivers who use the signs think that the signs_.A. are unnecessary B. can kill time C. can make drivers clear D. can improve safety26. What is the purpose of this text?A. To solve a problem. B. To describe a threat to traffic safety.C. To tell an interesting story. D. To persuade drivers to drive safely. DAmerican researchers say drinking tea may help strengthen the bodys defense system against infection(感染). Doctors at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, did the study. The team studied a chemical found in black, green, oolong and pekoe tea. This chemical is an amino acid(氨基酸)called L-theanine. The scientists say it may increase the strength of gamma delta T cells. Thats the letter T, not the drink. Gamma delta T cells are part of the bodys defenses.First, the researchers mixed some of these cells with antigens(抗原)found in the amino acid. Antigens help the body react to infection. Then the scientists added some bacteria(细菌). Within twenty-four hours, the cells produced a lot of interferon, a substance that fights infection. Cells not mixed with the antigens did not produce interferon. In the second part of the study, eleven people drank five to six cups of black tea every day. Ten other people drank the same amount of instant coffee. That is dried coffee mixed with hot water. Two weeks later, and again two weeks after that, the researchers tested the blood of all twenty-one people. They also looked at what happened when they added bacteria to the blood cells. They found that the tea drinkers produced five times more interferon after they started drinking tea. The coffee drinkers did not produce interferon.Doctor Jack Bukowski led the study. He says the antigens added to the gamma delta T cells were responsible for the increased reaction to the bacteria. He says the study also showed that the cells were able to remember the bacteria and fight them again the next time.Earlier research already has found that tea can help prevent heart disease and cancer. Doctor Bukowski says the new study must be repeated with more people. If the findings prove to be true, he says, then tea drinking might also help protect against bacterial infections. He says the amino acid L-theanine could be removed from tea and used as a drug to strengthen the bodys defenses.27We may know from the text that _ can be found in different kinds of tea.AGamma delta T cells BL-theanine CinterferonDbacteria28Tea may help strengthen the bodys defense system because it helps _.Athe body to produce more interferon Bthe body to produce more gamma delta T cellsCto add some bacteria to the blood cells Dto mix antigens with some of the cells in the body29According to Dr Bukowski, _.Athe findings of the study have already proved to be trueBhe has taken some amino acid L-theanine from tea and made a drug with itCfurther study is needed to prove the findings trueDhe is not sure whether tea can help prevent heart disease and cancer30What would be the best title for this Text?ATea Is Better Than Coffee.BTea May Help Fight InfectionCTea Can Help Prevent Cancer.DOur Body Needs Tea三、七选五ForgivenessTo forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research._31_ Try the following steps:Calm yourself. _32_ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.Dont wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just dont see things the same way. _33_ Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about you hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your mounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you._34_ If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offenders point of view.Dont forget to forgive yourself. _35_ But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you dont do it.Why should you forgive? How should you start to forgive?Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.Try to see things from you offenders angle. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.四、完型Recent years have seen many conflicts caused by square dancing. Since loud music_36_ students preparing for the College Entrance Examination (or gaokao),_37_citizens who practise the dance near a local middle school in Beijing _38_the music to the lowest possible volume. _39_the controversy, however, it is difficult to demand a(n) _40_on square dancing in the weeks before the College Entrance Examination , says an article .To some degree, it is necessary for senior citizens to sacrifice the_41_of square dancing despite being very _42_ of it. Their sacrifice is seen as necessary also because the gaokao is an important _43_point in a students life. But if students preparing for the gaokao have the_44_ to study in a peaceful environment, then senior citizens, too, have the right to practise the dance form of their _45_without disturbance. In the Beijing case _46_above, more than 300 senior citizens have set a good example by _47_a smaller square away from the middle school and turning down the volume of the music while practising the square dance. Therefore, the authorities, instead of forcing senior citizens to _48_practising square dancing in the weeks preceding the gaokao, should take measures to_49_ that they do so in non-residential areas and, definitely, as far away from _50_as possible. The authorities, for instance, could _51_for buses to take senior citizens to and from places where they could practise the dance without disturbing anyone and get some _52_ exercise and mental comfort._53_, local communities could organize leisure activities that create little noise to provide senior citizens with some_54_. In short, senior citizens should not be forced to give up square dancing in the weeks preceding the gaokao, _55_they should be provided with alternatives to spend their time happily.36AkeepsBleavesCdisturbsDhelps37AelderlyBfriendlyChealthyDactive38Aturned upBturned inCturned outDturned down39AIn spite ofBBecause ofCDue toDAs to40AsuggestionBactionCbanDpromotion41AapproachBmethodCpracticeDmanner42AtiredBexcitedCinterestedDfond43AturningBmovingCchangingDreforming44AabilityBrightCopportunity Dchance45AchoiceBnatureCrange Dvariety46AmentionedBexplainedCsuggestedDpromoted47Agetting toBmoving toCreferring toDcoming to48AstopBkeepCriskDmiss50AshopsBschoolsCfactoriesDparks51AarrangeBmakingCpayingDpreparing52AspiritualBphysical CmaterialDtechnical53AHoweverB.
