That may be the lesson that an independent film crew learned in Larimer County, Colo, after policemen rushed to them during a shoot for a movie. Members of the crew were at a campground near Lake Carter, shooting a scene where the lead actor takes a girl hostage and beats up on a good man who tries to come between so as to help the girl. “It happened very suddenly after that. We heard, Freeze! Police!” said Director Eileen Agosta. They were in the middle of the scene when some policemen ran over, shouting orders to get on the ground, pointing rifles(步枪)at the crew, actor Chris Borden said. Members of the crew were cuffed(上手铐)and held on the ground until the situation was sorted out. Borden said he believes the only reason the police didnt shoot him was because they saw a cameraman. Maj. Justin Smith, a police officer, said they received a call from someone at the lake and then raced to the park, blocking roads and came quietly up to the scene. “The police didnt rush into the situation and make a potentially bad situation worse,” said Cpl. Scott Shellhaas, spokesman of the county. “It was complete ignorance on my part,” said Agosta. “I honestly thought you could tell what we were doing I wouldnt have chosen a state park at 3:30(p.m.) on Saturday if I was going to hurt somebody.” Authorities said the scene they saw was realistic enough- a woman handcuffed to a car, a man beating another man with a pistol(手枪), people injured and bloodied and someone with a small video camera filming the event. “It is certainly not beyond belief there days that individuals do videotape crimes as they commit them,” said Smith. “Having a video camera there did not necessarily mean there was not a crime. They should have informed us about the filming and the fact that they would be using a false handgun during the shoot.”41. The underlined word “simulation” most probably means _. That same weekend, a homeless man came to the Santa Ana civic buildings and he was also searching for something. He made his routine visit to the dustbins nearby to look for aluminum cans. Instead, he found Bogues wallet. That Monday, the man, who declined to be identified, gave the money to Sherry Wesley who works in one of the buildings. “He came to me with the wallet wrapped in a plastic bag and said This probably belongs to someone that you work with, can you return it?” Wesley said. Grateful, Bogue gave the man a $ 100 reward, which he split with Wesley. She gave the money to her church. While the money would serve as a tempting find, especially for a homeless man, Wesley said the mans actions did not surprise her. “I know he has got the biggest heart,” she said. “Somebody like that who is so down on their luck and willing to help someone out is a rare thing.” The man is familiar to many employees in the area, even though not everyone knows his name. The 6-foot-5-inch man could frighten most people, but he has a friendly and polite nature. He greets people throughout the day and often speaks to Wesley, who serves food to the homeless community on Sundays with the Homeless Coalition of Orange County. “Every Sunday he always gives us a few dollars for lunch even though its free. In a closed meeting last month in Seattle, 40 members of the polar bear specialist group of the World Conservation Union concluded that the animals the worlds largest bears should now be classified as t “vulnerable(脆弱的)” species. Their conclusion was based on what they said was a likely 30 percent decline in their worldwide population over the next 35 to 50 years. There are now 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears across the Arctic. “The principal cause of this decline is climatic warming,” according to a statement of the meeting. Scientists from five countries attended the meeting. “All the evidence is heading in the same direction, and the trend is dramatic,” said Scott Schliebe, who led the Seattle meeting and is polar bear project leader in Alaska for the US Fish and Wildlife Service.” In a shrinking ice environment, the ability of the bears to find food, to reproduce, and to survive will all be reduced.” Schliebe said that he was speaking for the panel(专门小组)and not for the US government. The panels conclusions became public this week as President Bush traveled to the Group of Eight meeting in Scotland, where US officials have tried to prevent any specific targets for reducing so-called greenhouse gases from being included in the meeting. Those gases are widely believed to cause the warming that causes polar icecaps to melt. The United States is the only G-8 member that has refused to permit the Kyoto Protocol(京都议定书), which calls for reducing poisonous gases that many scientists say are causing Earth to warm up. The best information on the effect of global warming on polar bears comes perhaps from the western coast of Hudson Bay, in Manitoba. It found a 17 percent decline in the bears population in the past 10 years, from 1,200 to fewer than 1,000. The panel in Seattle used the Canadian research as a basis for its warning about the future of polar bears around the world. “We have seen with our own eyes that climatic warming is causing the ice to break up earlier,” said Ian Stirling, a scientist for the Canadian Wildlife Service. Ice is melting there about three weeks earlier than it did 30 years ago. “For a polar bear, not all weeks are created equal,” Stirling said. “ They are losing three weeks t the best time of the year for feeding on the ice, when little seals are abundant and bears put on fat that they store for the four months that they have live onshore.”51. The reason why the number of polar bears will drop is that _. A. polar bears are becoming smaller in size. B. polar icecaps are melting. C. polar bears are suffering from air pollution D. polar bears are forced to move52. Which of the following statements is TRUE about polar bears? A. They are the largest animal in the world. B. 30 percent of them have died in the last 35 to 50 years. C. There are 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears now. D. Their ability to survive is being reduced.53. We can infer from the passage that_. A. Hudson Bay lies in Canada B. the United States is the only G-8 member C. US wants to reduce greenhouse gases D. LSchliebe was speaking for the US government54. The underlined sentence “ For a polar bear, not all weeks are created equal” means _. A. different polar bears play different roles in their life in a year.
