Book 6 Unit 4 Global warming 单元测试第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。A Known as the worlds first-ever cloned camel, Injaz was born in Dubai on April 8, 2009. Injazs real mother was killed in an accident in 2005, but scientists saved the DNA and injected it into an empty egg cell (卵细胞) of Injazs new mother. With camel racing being big business in Dubai, such a breakthrough means a lot. Carbon Copy or Cc surprised everyone when she was born. For a start she had a grey stripe (条纹) running down her white back whereas her real mother, Rainbow, sported more of a gold and brown style. Then, when Cc started to play, she was found to be rather playful. Rainbow, however, had always been shy and disinterested. Born on July 7, 1999, Daisy was cloned from a 13-year-old cow named Aspen. Scientists had often worried that cloning the DNA of an elderly animal would result in health problems for the newborn animal. But Daisy proved doubters wrong when she was able to give birth naturally two years later. Dewey became the worlds first-ever cloned deer when he was born on May 23, 2003 at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Texas. Dewey is a white-taileddeer and became the fifth animal the college had successfully cloned, the others being a pig, cattle, goats and a cat. Little Idaho Gem celebrated a double when he was born in May 2003 becoming both the worlds first cloned mule (骡) and the worlds first clone connected to the horse family. Financed by a wealthy mule-racing person, Idaho Gem, along with another cloned mule, Idaho Star, was sent to a trainer for a successful career on the track. In October 2005 two wolves in Korea were successfully cloned to avoid extinction. Snuwolf and Snuwolffy were born in the Seoul Zoo. Unfortunately Snuwolf died in August 2009 from an infection which had absolutely nothing to do with the cloning process according to the scientists.21. Elsewhere in San Pablo, the Philippines, the locals have nearly exhausted all the available supply of plastic bottles at the dump. Both of them are looking for interesting ways of using these materials. In Guatemala, it all began with a volunteer, Laura Kutner, who wanted to help the village of Granados rebuild their dangerous school building. As there was no concrete (混凝土), Kutner and the village set about finding creative ideas with local resources. Trashed plastic bottles formed the inside of the schools walls. The bottles were filled with useless plastic bags to give them strength, and wrapped together into blocks by using wire (金属丝). A thin coat of cement and paint gave the finishing touch to the walls. Finding the material to fill 6,000 bottles required for building the school was really not that easy. Each student had to find and fill at least 20 bottles with plastic bags. The process took many months and in the meanwhile, the kids cleaned up the hillsides so thoroughly that they started running out of garbage and had to go to neighboring villages. Meanwhile in San Pablo, people gathered as many plastic bottles as they could find, and then used them to build themselves a completely new school. Filled with adobe (砖坯), these bottles are actually about three times stronger than concrete, making this “bottle school” quite a strong building and much cheaper. Glass bottles form the windows while flattened juice cases make the schools roof (屋顶). PVC pipes between the bottles serve as air vents (通风口), and reduce the need for electric fans inside the classroom. Architect Illac Diaz is the person behind this amazing project which includes a plan to build 8 classrooms and a library. While plastic bottles have been a convenient invention, poor recycle practices have made them the fastest growing source of garbage on our planet. Luckily, working models in Guatemala and the Philippines are being reproduced in many parts of the world. 25. How plastic bottles ruin the environmentC Mrs. Herrick and Mr. Gosnell have known each other for more than 35 years and have been out fishing together more than 500 times. The ordeal (苦难经历) for Mr. Gosnell and fishing partner Colleen Herrick began when their boat hit something in the Hauraki Gulf on May 26, 2009. After the 4.8 m boat sank in 10 to 15 seconds, Mr. Gosnell decided to swim back to get help to Mrs. Herrick, who was holding on to its side. Mr. Gosnell, 42, said it was Mrs. Herricks calmness that saved their lives. “The last pocket of air in the nose of the boat was almost gone, with both of us holding on. But Colleen remained amazingly calm. We made the decision that because I was the stronger swimmer, I should go for help.” He swam against the water for more than an hour, broke two toes and ran on rocks to get help to save a drowning friend. Meanwhile, Mrs. Herrick, 53, said she counted stars and thought of her eight grandchildren. “I wasnt afraid because I knew Mr. Gosnell,” Mrs. Herrick said. Mrs. Herrick was eventually found and picked up just over an hour after the boat sank. She was soon taken by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital. “When they came back and I asked if she had been found alive they said yes I just broke down. All that had been worth it,” Mr. Gosnell said. Eleven days before, on May 15, a Cornishman who saved a girl from a swimming pool on his wedding day has been called a hero by his wife. However, there are advantages and disadvantages in becoming a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgeons are among the highest paid medical professionals. According to the Health Care Training Center website, plastic surgeons with one to two years of experience bring home an average of $237,000 per year. Those with three or more years of experience bring home an average of $412,000 per year, and plastic surgeons with several years under their belts may earn around $812,000 per year. Plastic surgeons often get to sculpt entire faces or parts of the body. It is one of the more creative fields of medicine, as they are able to use their skills to shape skin and bones, especially when the work is done on someone in need, such as a burn victim or a child born with a deformed face. The ability to make vast changes in the way people view themselves is a rewarding highlight of this career. Plastic surgeons must undergo quite a bit of schooling and strict certification (认定) processes before they are able to practice medicine. The schooling process is lengthy and costly, considering plastic surgeons must get a bachelors degree and then attend medical school. Upon graduating from medical school, plastic surgeons must then do five to six years of residency (住院医生实习期). Once they enter the field professionally, many choose to become certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which offers credibility as a plastic surgery professional. Although plastic surgeons can do a lot for those who wish to look better, they are still sometimes respected less because of the work they do. Plastic surgeons work with men and women who want to make changes in their faces and bodies for vanity (虚荣) purposes. Because of the serious nature of any surgery, other surgeons may look down on plastic surgeons willing to work with patients taking such a serious risk for beauty.33.
