He should know the techniques ofcommunication in meetings. He should know how to use these techniques 40 his ownadvantage. It is sometimes 41 that when a manager cant think what to do, he holds a meeting. But meetings 42 themselves are not an end product, no matter what some may think. Theyare merely one of many 43 of management communication. It may well be that a problemcan be solved by a one-to-one discussion, face to face, or even by telephone. (1) The Timber rattlesnake, once widespread throughout the eastern United States, is now onthe endangered species list and is extinct in two eastern states in which it once thrived.Compared to its western cousins, the Timber rattlesnake may be especially vulnerable becauseof certain behaviors adapted for coping with the cold climate in which it lives. Rattlesnakes are generally found in warm climates because, like all reptiles, they cannotgenerate or regulate their own body temperature internally and must rely on the suns warmthfor heat. But Timber rattlesnakes migrated into colder northern areas about 8,000 years agowhen glaciers (冰川) retreated. In these northern regions, the snakes developed a number ofadaptive strategies to survive, but ultimately these behaviors make them more vulnerable tohuman predation, their main threat. One survival strategy the snakes have developed is hibernation. For approximately eightmonths of the year, the rattlers remain motionless in deep frost-free crevices, with their bodytemperature dropping as low as 40 degrees. In the spring when they emerge, they must warmtheir chilled bodies by sunning themselves for three or four days on rocks in the open. Thisbehavior, coupled with the fact that Timber rattlesnakes tend to concentrate in large numbers attheir wintering sites, makes them easy prey. Gestating females are particularly vulnerablebecause they spend much of their time basking in the sun in order to produce live young fromeggs. In addition, females have very long interbirth intervals, producing live young only everythree to five years. If a frost or cold spell comes late in the year, the entire litter of six to twelveyoung may die. Efforts are under way to protect the Timber rattlesnake and its habitat from further humandepredation, but in many states it is already too late.51. What is the main topic of the passage? A. Wealthy and sociallyprominent settlers made quilts of the English type, cut from large lengths of cloth of the samecolor and texture rather than stitched together from smaller pieces. They made these until theadvent of the Revolutionary War in 1775, when everything English came to be frowned upon. Among the whole-cloth quilts made by these wealthy settlers during the early period arethose now called linsey-woolseys. This term was usually applied to a fabric of wool and linenused in heavy clothing and quilted petticoats worn in the wintertime. Despite the name, linsey-woolsey bedcovers did not often contain linen. Rather, they were made of a top layer of woolenor glazed worsted wool fabric, consisting of smooth, compact yarn from long wool fibers, dyeddark blue, green, or brown with a bottom layer of a coarser woolen material, either natural or ashade of yellow. The filling was a soft layer of wool which had been cleaned and separated andthe three layers were held together with decorative stitching done with homespun linen thread.Later cotton thread was used for this purpose. The design of the stitching was often a simpleone composed of interlocking circles or crossed diagonal lines giving a diamond pattern. This type of heavy, warm, quilted bedcover was so large that it hung to the floor. Thecomers were cut out at the foot of the cover so that the quilt fit snugly around the tall four-poster beds of the 1700s, which differed from those of today in that they were shorter andwider; they were short because people slept in a semi-sitting position with many bolsters orpillows, and wide because each bed often slept three or more. The linsey-woolsey coveringwas found in the colder regions of the country because of the warmth it afforded. There was nocentral heating and most bedrooms did not have fireplaces.57.
