(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)Horror stories about the food industry have long been with us ever since 1906, when Upton Sinclairs landmark novel The Jungle told some ugly truths about how America produces its meat. In the century that followed, things got much better, and in some ways much worse. The U.S. agricultural industry can now produce unlimited quantities of meat and grains at remarkably cheap prices. But it does so at a high cost to the environment, animals and humans. 1 Add to the price tag the acceleration of global warming our energy-intensive food system uses 19% of U.S. fossil fuels, more than any other sector of the economy. And perhaps worst of all, our food is increasingly bad for us, even dangerous. 2 A food system that generates cheap, filling food at the expense of healthier produce is also a major cause of Americas widespread obesity. At a time when the nation is close to a civil war over health-care reform, obesity adds $147 billion a year to our doctor bills. “The way we farm now is destructive of the soil, the environment and us,” says Doug Gurian-Sherman, a senior scientist with the food and environment program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. 3 Film documentaries like the highly critical Food Inc. and the work of investigative journalists like Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan are repeating Sinclairs work, awakening a sleeping public to the uncomfortable realities of how we eat. Change is also coming from the very top. First Lady Michelle Obamas White House garden has so far yielded more than 225 pounds of organic produce and tons of powerful symbolism. 4 Sustainable food is also more expensive than conventional food and harder to find. And while large companies like General Mills have opened organic divisions, there is worry that the very definition of sustainability will be used by those companies only for their own good. But we cant afford to remain in philosophizing about food. With the exhaustion of the soil, the impact of global warming and the inevitably rising price of oil which will affect everything from fertilizer to supermarket electricity bills our industrial style of food production will end sooner or later. As the developing world grows richer, hundreds of millions of people will want to shift to the same calorie-heavy, protein-rich diet that has made Americans so unhealthy demand for meat and poultry worldwide is set to rise 25% by 2015 but the earth can no longer deliver. Unless Americans radically rethink the way they grow and consume food, they face a future of damaged farmland, emptied-out countryside, terrifying germs, higher health costs and tasteless diet. Sustainable food has an litist reputation, but each of us depends on the soil, animals and plants and as every farmer knows, if you dont take care of your land, it cant take care of you. A. Some Americans are paying attention to such warnings and working to transform the way the country eats farmers who are raising sustainable food in ways that dont bankrupt the earth.B. A series of recalls involving polluted foods this year including a case of salmonella poisoning from tainted peanuts that killed at least eight people and sickened 600 has consumers rightly worried about the safety of their meals.C. But, despite increasing public awareness, sustainable agriculture remains a tiny enterprise: according to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, less than 1% of American cropland is farmed organically.D. And when the rains come, the excessive fertilizer that helped to take so much corn out of the ground will be washed into the Mississippi River and down into the Gulf of Mexico, where it will help kill fish for miles around.E. Those hidden prices are the gradual damage of our rich farmland, cages for egg-laying chickens so packed that the birds cant even raise their wings and the horrible rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among farm animals. 5. Manigault, the wife of my mothers brother Bill, when she taught me in second grade at all-black Summer School in Camden, New Jersey. During my childhood and youth, Aunt Myrtle encouraged me to develop every aspect of my potential, without regard for what was considered practical or possible for black females. I liked to sing; she listened to my voice and pronounced it good. I couldnt dance; she taught me the basic jitterbug steps. Aunt Myrtle also took down books from her extensive library and shared them with me. We had books at home, but they were all serious classics. Even as a child I had a strong liking for humor, and I will never forget the joy of discovering Don Marquiss Archy & Mehitabel through her. A writer herself for one of the black newspapers, the Philadelphia edition of the Pittsburgh Courier, she suggested my name to the editor as a “youth columnist.” My column, begun at age fourteen, was supposed to cover teenage social activities and it did but it also gave me the opportunities to write on many other subjects as well as the habit of gathering material, the discipline (训练) of meeting deadlines, and, after college graduation six years later, a solid portfolio (代表作品选) of published material that was my passport to a series of writing jobs. Today Aunt Myrtle, independently and through her organization (she is a founding member of The Links, Inc.), is still an enthusiastic booster (推动者) of culture and of her “favorite niece.” As I told her theater club recently, she is “as brilliant and beautiful as a diamond.” And, like a diamond, she has reflected a bright, multifaceted (多面的) image of possibilities to every pupil who has crossed her path. A. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no train or airplane to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our hearts desire Through books we may get the excitement of dangerous adventure without danger We can climb noble mountains, brave the freeze of an Antarctic winter, or cross the extremely hot sands of the desert, all without hardship In books we may visit the studios of Hollywood; we may mix with the cheerful crowds of the Paris roads; we may join the picturesque peasants in an Alpine village or the kindly natives on a South Sea island Indeed, through books the whole world is ours for the asking第一节:根据短文容,从ABCDE中选出最适合放入短文空缺处的选项。 A With a good book in our hands we never feel lonelyB Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in lifeC By reading we can communicate with the characters in booksD One of the most valuable gifts presented by books is experienceE Our human friends may sometimes bore us, but the friends we make in books never annoy us第二节:根据短文所给的信息,用一个完整的句子回答下面的问题。5 What can be implied from the underlined sentence in the text? Even today there are a great many wrong ideas about food Some of them are very widespread One such idea is that fish is the best brain food Fish is good brain food just as it is good muscle food and skin food and bone food 1 no one has been able to prove that fish is any 2 for the brain than many other foods Another such idea is that you should not drink water with meals Washing food down 3 water as a substitute for chewing is not a good idea, but some water with meals has been found to be helpful 4 makes the digestive juices flow more freely and helps to digest the food A few years 5 the belief became general 6 orange juice and milk should never be drunk at the same time The reason 7 (give)was that the acid in the orange juice would make the milk curdle(凝结)and become indigestible As a matter of fact, milk always meets in the stomach a digestive juice which curdles it; the curdling of the milk is 8 first step in its digestionStill another wrong idea about mixing foods is that proteins and carbohydrates should never 9 (eat)simultaneously(同时地) Many people think of bread, for example, as a carbohydrate food It is chiefly a carbohydrate food, but it also contains proteins 10 the same way, milk, probably the best single food, contains both proteins and carbohydrates1. _ 2. _ 3. _ 4. _ 5. _6. _ 7. _ 8. _ 9. _ 10. _2013届高三英语自选模块练习(八)题号:05阅读理解(分两节,共5题,每小题2分,满分10分)Kids in the U.S. have made significant gains in math and science and score above average on international fourth-and-eighth-grade tests, though Asian countries have the biggest share in both, an international study found. An AP poll in June, 2008 found that nearly two in five people believe American students do worse on math and science tests than those in most of the developed countries. “Not true,” said Ina V.S. Mullis, a Boston College research professor and co-director of the study. “The Asian countries are far ahead of the rest of developed countries, but mostly the developed countries are relatively similar, and the United States might be one of the leaders of that group, depending on whether youre talking about math or science in the fourth or the eighth grade.” Conducted every four years, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study is widely used to measure the knowledge and skills of elementary middle school students around the world. The study compares the United States with other rich, industrialized countries as well as many poorer nations. However, compare the U.S. to similarly rich countries, and its performance drops to the middle of the pack, said Andrew Coulson, a representative to the international group that administers the test. The state tests required by the No Child Left Behind Law also show similar results, indicating progress in math and less progress in science. The 2002 law, which has become as unpopular as its champion, former President George W. Bush, requires annual state tests and imposes penalties (加以惩罚) on schools that fail to make progress. Outgoing Education Secretary Margaret Spellings said those findings show the need for the federal No Child Left Behind Law. “The flat scores remind us that we cant afford to be content, ” Spellings said. “Instead, we must pick up the pace. ”第一节:根据短文内容,从A、B、C、D、E中选出最适合放入短文空缺处的选项,并将序号及相应的答案写在答题纸上。选项中有一项是多余选项。A. Regardless, the international findings generally agree with the United StatesNational Assessment of Educational Progress.E.
