INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONSFOR4 X 8” HIGH SPEED THREE ROLL MILLSINSTALLATIONUpon receiving a Ross 4 x 8” High Speed Three Roll Mill, take the time to inspect the unit and make sure that it has arrived safely and was not damaged in transit. Ross Mills are packed securely to minimize the possibility of damage during shipment. The mill is normally shipped completely assembled. If controls were supplied with the unit, they are usually supplied separately for wiring and installation by your electrician to local, state, and federal codes. When removing the mill from the shipping container, take special care to prevent marring the working surface of the rolls. The proper functioning of the mill is critical to rolls with their working surfaces unblemished.(1)Before the mill is placed into the operation, it should be bolted in place. A solid base is required, especially for production size models. The base should be level. If not, it will be necessary to level the rolls of the mill by shimming the mill frame.(2)When the mill is leveled and bolted in place, it should be wired. Wiring and installation of electrical control components must be done by a qualified electrician. Pushbutton stations and starters are not normally supplied. Electrical components are to be supplied by customer unless originally ordered with mill. Note: Remove all packing materials from rolls before activating electricals. Retract front and back rolls from center rolls so that they are not touching.Page 2(3)Install water connections to inlet of water manifold. Three individual valves control the flow of water to the three rolls. The valves have to be individually adjusted. The front roll requires the most cooling; therefore, it will require more water than either of the other two rolls. Adjustment will be necessary during operation with actual process materials. The discharge line should be connected to a cooling tower or an environmentally acceptable discharge source. Discharge line must be sized to prevent backup of cooling fluid.(4)The mills are shipped with a rust preventative material on the roll surfaces. This can be removed with a cleaning solvent and should be done prior to operating the mill. Special Note: See roll cleaning instructions prior to removal of the rust preventative.(5)The scraper blade and apron will also be covered with the rust preventative. This should be removed with the same cleaning solvent as was used to clean the rolls. Caution: The scraper blade has a sharp cutting edge and should be handled with care. See special cleaning instructions.(6)The apron should now be set to the correct operating position. When correctly positioned, the apron is set so that the scraper blade is contacting the roll just above the roll centerline and parallel with the roll surfaces. Scraper tension should only provide enough pressure to remove milled materials from the roll surface. Excessive pressure will wear the knife prematurely and can potentially damage the roll surfaces.(7)Position the endplates on the roll surfaces to accommodate the batch size. The endplates should be run with a slight clearance to the roll surfaces. Care should be taken to prevent damage to the sharp points of the endplates. Damaged endplates will cause leaking of the material being milled.Page 3(8)Check the rotation of the rolls by jogging the mill with the start/stop pushbuttons. The top of the takeoff, front or high speed roll, should rotate towards you when you face the front or apron side of the mill.OPERATIONA.Adjust rear roll gap to about two or three thousandths of an inch. This is done by turning the handwheels on standard mills. On hydraulic mills, simply operate the pump to close the rolls.B.Front roll must be open at least ten thousandths of an inch or more.C.The endplates are now adjusted to give a uniform gap of a few thousandths of an inch between itself and the roll circumference.D.Pour the unground paste between the center and rear rolls.E.Start mill. Adjust the rear roll so that the film of material tracks evenly. Now bring the front roll in contact with the center roll. An even flow of material should be taken off.F.A finer grind can be obtained by tightening the front roll, but the feed must be decreased somewhat by closing the rear gap. This is done to avoid spitting and dripping.G.Now engage the apron in order to remove the material. Only a minimal amount of pressure is required.H.Do not run mill dry. When paste has almost run through, open rolls and disengage apron.I.Clean mill with solvent and shut off. If the mill is not to be used for a period of time, it is advisable to coat the rolls with oil.CLEANINGSee attached American National Standard (ANSI) safety requirements for Three Roll Mills.ANSI B177.1-1975 and ANSI B177.1-1979Page 4MAINTENANCETurn off electrical power prior to any maintenance. Roll journals are equipped with ball or roller bearings. All bearings are fitted with Alemite fittings for lubrication. We suggest lubricating the bearings on a monthly basis. The motor fittings s
