Soliloquy in Hamlet The 1st soliloquy (I. ii): After the funeral and the wedding, both Claudius and Gertrude try to comfort Hamlet and ask him to stay with them in Denmark instead of going back to Wittenberg, Germany; Hamlet agrees and Claudius decides to celebrate. O God! God! How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world; Tis an unweeded garden that grows to seed.(上帝啊! So excellent a king, that was to this Hyperion (the god of the sun in Greek mythology; the symbol of male beauty) to a Satyr (the god of the forest in Greek and Roman mythology; half man, half goat; the symbol of lewdness). Frailty, thy name is woman! A little month, or ere those shoes were old with which she followed my poor fathers body like Niobe (Queen of Thebes in Greek mythology, changed into a stone while weeping for his murdered children, and then continues to shed tears.), all tears why she, even she (O God! A beast that wants discourse of reason would have mourned longer) married with my uncle; My fathers brother, but no more like my father that I to Hercules (son of Zeus, renowned for his accomplishment of twelve heroic deeds). The 2nd soliloquy (I. v): Hamlets fathers ghost reveals the truth of his death to Hamlet and asks him to take revenge. O most pernicious woman! The 3rd soliloquy (II. ii): After a troupe of players is invited to stage a play imitating his fathers murder but before the actual performance. Bloody, bawdy villain! Remorseless, treacherous, lecherous, kindless villain! O, vengeance! Why, What an ass am I! This is most brave, That I, the son of a dear father murdered, prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell, Must (like a whore) unpack my heart with words And fall a-cursing like a very drab, A scullion!(嗜血的、荒淫的恶贼! The 5th soliloquy (III. ii): Soft! now to my mother! O heart, lose not thy nature; let not ever the soul of Nero (a Roman Emperor who killed his mother) enter this firm bosom. Let me be cruel, not unnatural; I will speak daggers to her, but use none. The 6th soliloquy (III. iii): Claudius is praying and Hamlet has the chance to take revenge but he hesitates. Now might I do it pat, now he is praying; And now Ill dot. And so he goes to heaven, And so am I revenged. That would be scanned. A villain kills my father; and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven. Why, this is hire and salary, not revenge. To take him in the purging of his soul, when he is fit and seasoned for his passage? 不,收起我的剑来 ) When he is drunk asleep; or in his rage; 0r in the incestuous pleasure of his bed; at gaming, swearing, or about some act that has no relish of salvation int Then trip him, that his heels may kick at heaven, and that his soul may be as damned and black as hell (当他在酒醉以后、在愤怒当中或是在乱伦纵欲的时候,在赌博、咒骂或是干其他邪恶勾当的时候,我就让他倒在我的脚下,让他幽深黑暗不见天日的灵魂永堕地狱。) The 7th soliloquy (IV. iv): Hamlet kills Polonius; Claudius decides to send Hamlet to England to have him killed there; the Norwegian army led by Prince Fortinbras are marching by way of England to Poland to fight for “a little patch of ground” (“an eggshell”). How all occasions do inform against me and spur my dull revenge! What is a man, if his chief good and market of his time be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more. I have cause, and will, and strength, and means to dot. . . . How stand I then, that have a father killed, a mother stained, excitements of my reason and my blood, and let all sleep The 4th soliloquy (III. i): Polonius thinks that Ophelia is the cause for Hamlets madness and Claudius decides to prove whether it is true by arranging a meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia.
