They not only make us laugh at the circus but they used to make the king and his followers laugh at court. The earliest of these funmakers are called “fools”. In Greek and Roman times these fools dressed up like clowns do today with painted faces and funny costumes. They danced around the stage and did things to make people laugh as clowns do in circuses today. By medieval times every court had its fool. Fools wore bright colours and had bells on their shoes and their hats. They were not really meant to be foolish and often they would say wise and sensible things to the king which nobody else was brave enough to say. The king never got cross with the fool though as this was his job. He was meant to be both wise and foolish and try to make the situation at court less serious. Of course people wanted to have their own kind of fool and shows developed in the 1500s in which fools (or Zanies) performed to make the crowd laugh. This kind of entertainment became so popular that it started a special kind of drama in Italy called “Commedia del Arte” which gradually turned into our comedy programmes today. When you watch the antics of Charlie Chaplin or Rowan Atkinson you are watching a kind of comedy that is directly descended from the fools of ancient Rome and Greece. 1. A. the Zanies spoke different languages B. the Zanies expressed ideas through gestures C. they had interpreters at their shows D. they used a special kind of language 5. What does the word “cross” in the second paragraph mean?A. satisfied B. through C. angry D. delightedBWe all know the old saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” But can we make ourselves laugh at will? According to a Czech doctor, Karel Nespor, the answer is “Yes!” In his book, The Healing Power of Laughter, he tells us good ways to produce laughter all day long so we can be happy and healthy. He believes that with a little training, anyone can laugh at everyday events and therefore enjoy better health and relationships. Dr Nespor says that we should start effective “laughter-training” first thing in the morning. As soon as we get up, we should be sure to smile at ourselves in the mirror. We may feel silly at first, but that will only make us smile more! The next step is while we are bored or anxiously waiting for something, we should think of funny things. For example, as we wait in line for the bus, we can imagine Tom Hanks character in the movie The Terminal and how he loses his ID papers, has to live in an airport and entertain himself and others in very amusing ways. The third step is to laugh at difficult things that make us feel sad or even afraid. Really! When these situations and feelings come, we can laugh at our problems, and find humour in real life. No matter how unpleasant things are, try to imagine that these events are like an old friend whom you love to joke with. This will help us learn the powerful skill of letting go of negative thinking and replacing it with positive thoughts. And finally, as we eat our dinner at night, remember what Dr Nespor says, “Laughter need not be lonely. Smile more often at your friends and relatives. Point out funny things to each other, tell each other humorous stories, and laugh together a lot.” Repeat these four steps each day for best results! There are two points to remember to keep your funny feelings flourishing: avoid entertainment such as horror movies, and be careful not to laugh at others. This may hurt them and you as well. Dr Nespor warns that “making others unhappy may reverse(颠倒;翻转) the health benefits of laughter.” But making yourself and others happy should produce long-lasting healthy effects. 6. But modern research has found this is not so, for it is not easy to say exactly what each part of the brain does. In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount of research done on the brain. Scientists have discovered that the way the brain works is not so simple as people may think. Chemists tell us that 100,000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent researches also suggest that we can remember everything that happens to us. We may not be able to think back the things weve heard and seen, but it is all kept there in the storehouse of the human mind. Earlier scientists thought that power of ones brain got weaker and weaker as one grew older. But it is now thought that that is not true. As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise it keeps its power. It has been proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain. It is now thought that the more work we give our brains, the more work they are able to do. 1. A2. B3. C4. A. 单项选择,从A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择
