Stonehenge-Can Anybody Explain Why It Is There?Reading Unit 8 Students Book IIITeaching goals:The first goal of this lesson is not to learn the vocabulary or the grammar, but to learn how to read an article and how to get the useful information. The second goal of this reading lesson, is to get more knowledge about Stonehenge and the other wonders of the world. The third goal is to help our students open their eyes and mind to the world , and this can make our students be more interested in studying all kinds of knowledge.Important and the difficult points:1. Get some information of the wonder-Stonehenge.2. Ss know how to read an article and get the useful information.Teaching steps:Step I “Lead-in”Show many beautiful and amazing pictures and photos of the worlds wonders. Use them to make the students feel more curious about this lesson.Step II PresentationPlay a video about the news of Stonehenge, from CCTV. Use the real information to help the students. Its convincing. After the video, two questions for the students: 1. What do you think of Stonehenge? 2. What do you want to know about Stonehenge?(Use these two questions to help the students to get the right information from the article later.)After the PPT, the video and the questions, its time to read the article. Step III Reading The first time, and the first reading task is to make paragraph breaks ,just like they usually do in Chinese class. The second time, and the second task is to get the main points from each part. The third time, the students can get more details in each part, and the students will use the chart to learn how to read an article and how to get the main ideas.(And then the chart is completed, from the chart ,the students can easily know how they read and get the useful information. And they can also use the chart to retell the whole article about Stonehenge.) Step IV Learn to retell The students try to retell the article according to the completed chart. It shouldnt be difficult for them to finish the task.And after they retell the story, T will show them more information about Stonehenge to make them know it better, not only the simple introduction from the article, but also more scientific survey results, this can make them feel more serious.Step V Learn to imagine Twill show two wonders in China: The Great Wall and Terro-cotta Warriors. And the students must use the way of reading Stonehenge to search information, pull together the information about the two wonders,then make sure they can write a short passage about one between them, they will have a groupwork, everybody has his/her own task, he/she can ask the teacher/parents for more information; and other partners can search on the Internet, at last, they will make a report, and they will be guides to give the report to others.
