文档简介
It is necessary for us striving to measure every aspect of one thing, before we resolve whether this thing should or should not be done.Additionally, different groups of people always hold different answers due to their respective of view.(From my standpoint,I principlely accept the suggestion of the speaker thatAnd there are two related reasons to demonstrate my opinion./At the first glance, the opinion suggested by the speaker seems to be somewhat reasonable, but after further consideration,I cannot accept with it for the two main following reasons.) The first reason why I support with the above statement is that The further reason to illustrate my point is that (I must point out that the speaker is negligent of the bare fact,as a result, the opinion suggested by him inevitably exist two undeniable deficiency. ) Of course,we cannot exaggerate the function of In sum, although there are some extreme examples existing, however,we cannot deny the two reasons intertwine to form an organic integration, thus becoming more persuasive (than the opinion tendered by the speaker.)So,any thinking person must believe that 1、 History:(1) .History can provide the only extensive materials available to study the human condition.(2) .History focuses attention on the complex processes of social change, including the factors that are causing change around us.(3) .There are two related reasons many people become enthralled with the examination of our past and why our society encourage and requires the study of history as a major subject in the school.(4) .History teaching by example is one phrase perfectly summarized the use of the study of history.(5) .History helps provide identity, and this is unquestionably one of the reason all modern nations encourage its teaching in some form.(6) .History tells the national story, emphasizing distinctive features of the national experience, are meant to drive home an understanding of national values a commitment to national loyalty. Why should students in most countries asked to study history about their own nations as well as the concise history of the world, despite many students feel sleepy, even disgusted, during the history classes?Historians, politicians, educators, students and publics hold different explanations. In my view, the substantial meaning of why should us study history is that history can provide the only extensive materials available to study the human condition.History teaching by example, some of the materials emphasizes the distinctive features of the national experience;some of the materials focuses attention on the complex processes of social change. Those materials can help us know our past and understand the causes of the changes around us.According to the words above,I think there are two main related reasons lead many people enthralled with the examination of our past and why our society encourages and requires the study of history as a major subject in the school. On the one hand, history helps provide identity. This is the first unquestionable reason of all modern nations encourage teaching it in some forms. This kind of identity, provided by history, just like a mirror revealing the defects, not only related to individuals, but also society and world, and guiding us running on the surefire ways. Moreover, there will be a rude awakening if anybody ignored the exhortation told by history. On the other hand, history can drive home an understanding of national values a commitment to national loyalty. 2、 Education:(1) .Individuals and companies alike, for the sake of survival in competition, must continue to improve their services and products, and as a result, the entire society prospers,at least economically. (2) .Although competition advances human civilization,it also separate winners and losers.Competition is necessary only when there is not enough room for everybody to be a winner. However, cooperation can produce the win-win situation.(3) .There is no escaping the fact that young people need as example principals and teachers who know the difference between right and wrong, good and bad,and who themselves exemplify the hight moral purpose.(4) .The form of moral relativism said,in effect, that no set of values was right or wrong;everybody had an equal right to his own values;and all values were subject, relative, and personal.(5) .The truth of the real world is that without standards and judgements, there can be no progress.Unless we are prepared to say irrational things-that nothing can be proven more valuable than anything else or that everything is equally worthless-we must ask the normative question.(6) There are values that all American citizens share and that we should want all American students to know and to make their own:honesty,fairness,self-discipline,fidelity to task, friends, and family, personal responsibility, love of country, and belief in the principles of liberty, equality, and the freedom to practice ones faith.(7) .Unlike Aristotle who is believed to have known everything there was to know at the time he lived,it is impossible for us to deal with the voluminous amounts of information which are produced daily. The lifelong learning which we have alluded to will not always be acquired through the traditional sixteen -week college course.(8) .The most important part of education, once wrote William Ernest Hocking, the distinctive Harvard philosopher,is the instruction of a man in what he has inside him.(9) .The new emphasis will be learning,in addition to the lecture through student initiative in setting the program, acquiring knowledge through the Internet as needed, collaborating with peers in special project, experiential learning through internships, study abroad, and many other out-of-classroom experiences.(10) The thinkers serves society by providing a leavening of men of understanding,of perception, and wisdom. They are our intellectual leaders, the critics of our culture, the defenders of our free traditions, and the instigators of our progress. They serve society by examining its function, appraising its needs, and criticizing its direction. (11) .The critical thinking is a path to freedom from half-truth and deception.Everyone have the right to question what you see, hear, and read,Acquiring this ability is one of the major goals of a liberal education. 3、 Science and Technology(1) .Although scientific discoveries and technological advances have produced tremendous improvements in the quality of human life, they have often had negative consequences as well.(2) .Some inventions affect population directly:Improvement in sanitation, the development of cures for fatal illnesses, and more effective contraceptive techniques are examples. But inventions can also have indirect effects on population .For example, techniques that improve crop yields or permit long-term storage of food surpluses make it possible to support a larger population with a given amount of farmland. And improvement in military technology have had dramatic effects on the conduct of war and hence on population.(3) .It may be that the new technologies of computers and automation will begin another long boom or wave of economic growth in the next decade,as many people in advanced industrial societies hope. But it is clear that in the late 1970s the previous long boom, stimulates in part by the availability of cheap energy, was over,A new economic boom therefore may depend on new developments in energy technology.(4) .The quest for new sources of energy to meet the needs of growing population, has given rise to a succession of energy technologies, each more sophisticated than the last.Animal power gave away to steam-driven machinery, which in turn was replaced by the internal-combustion engine.Reliance on oil and its derivatives, especially gasoline, encouraged the growth of powerful energy corporations, which often lobby government agencies for assistance in developing new technologies like nuclear energy. (5) .Some of the most famous scientific revolutions hate occurred in physics, for example,in the shift from Newtonian physics to Einsteins theory of relatively and quantum theory and most recently in the discovery of the existence of subatomic particles.(6) .One of the basic norms of scientific institutions is universalism:The truth of scientific knowledge must be determined hy the impersonal criteria of the scientific method, not by criteria related to race, nationality, religion, social class,or political ideology. Another norm of science is common ownership of scientific findings. Those findings are a result of collaboration and hence are not the property of any individual, although in some cases they may bear the name of the person who first published them,as in Darwins theory of evolution or Einsteins theory of relativity.(7) .The belief was strongly entrenched in the doctrines of the Catholic church. 4、 Ideas(1) .Thorough thinking is the ability to examine and reexamine ideas that may seem obvious.Such thinking takes time and the willingness to say three subversive words:I dont know.Thorough thinking is also the willingness to change our point if view as we continue to examine a problem. This calls for courage and detachment.(2) .They distinguish between opinion and fact. They ask powerful questions. They make detailed observations. They uncover assumptions and define their terms. They make assertions carefully, basing them on sound logic and solid evidence.Almost everything that we call knowledge is a result of these activities. This means that the critical thinking and learning are intimately linked.(3) .There are two things implied in the word creativity,as I have come to understand it:novelty and significance. What is created is new,and the new opens up paths that expand human possibility. All creative behavior breaks from the past but remains indebted to it.5、 Mass Media(1) .The vast majority of us are targets in advertisers propaganda war.Every day,we are bombarded with slogans, print ads, commercials, packing claims, billboards, trademarks, logos and designer brands-all forms of propaganda. This saturation may even increase in the future since current trends include ads on movie screens, shopping carts, videocassettes, even public televisions.(2) .They use vague terms,in order to explain their glittering generalities, that are difficult to define and that may have different meanings to different people:freedom, democratic, progressive and justice. As with name calling, the emotional response may overwhelm logic.6、 Society(1) .Art has an effect on the individual and on a particular culture in a society.Psychologically, art enhances life by adding beauty to out surroundings. It is a source of pleasure and relaxation from the stresses of life.Socially, art plays a number of different roles by virtue of its capacity to embody symbolic significance to its audience.(2) .Ethnocentrism serves a society by creating greater feeling of group unity.(3) .Every human society is a group, whose members perceive their common identity because of the culture that binds them together. All human societies that have been studied subdivide into small groups that coalesce from time to time for specialized activities.(4) .It will not come as a surprise that a society that admires independence and progress does not have an automatic respect fr authority. What deferent people in authority do command is based on their actual power rather than on their age, wisdom,or dignity. After all,it was by overthrowing the King of England that the United States was born, and suspicion of authority has remained a pillar of American life.(5) .To an American, what the world thinks of him is extremely important.Only through the eyes of others can success have significance. The theory of analyst David Riesman is that Americans are no longer primarity governed by inner values handed down through generations.Instead,he think that Americans have become outer-directed people-guided not by their own consciences but by the opinion of others.(6) .Nowhere is modern thinking more muddled than over the question of whether it is proper to debate moral issues. Many argue it is not, saying it is wrong to make value judgement .This view is shallow. If such judgments were wrong ,then ethics, and theology would be unacceptable in a college curriculum-an idea that is obviously silly. However,no matter how difficult it may be to judge such moral issues,we must judge them.Value judgment is the basis not only of our social code, but of out legal system. The quality of our laws is directly affected by the quality of our moral judgments.(7) .Hundreds of distinct cultures and languages and many types of people have created thousands different styles that defy classification. Each art and craft form has its own history and its own aesthetic content. But there are some common denominators. In summary, art explains the experience, describe values and a way of life, helps man relate to imaginations, mediates social relations, expresses emotions and enhances mans present life as an embellishment denoting pride of status as well as providin
